What Makes Time Travel So Fascinating?

Time travel is one of the most enduring themes in fiction.

While The Time Machine, by H.G. Wells was not the first time travel story, it's certainly the most well known to modern readers.  But more popular fiction often features time travel as well, such as A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens.

Many concepts in science fiction are so esoteric as to baffle non-technical readers, while time travel remains accessible.  We know what it's like to walk and talk in the present, and time travel opens up the speculation of walking and talking to people in the past or future.

The concept of time travel used in fiction varies greatly from work to work.  Can the past be changed?  Can you meet an earlier or later version of yourself?  What happens if you do manage to change the past?  All these questions have as many answers as there are time travel stories.

I think that's why time travel is so fascinating...it's accessible, and the possibilities are endless.
