Tin Man - Spiritual Growth Metaphor - Introduction

Tin Man (a remake of the classic Wizard of Oz) is the source of this spiritual growth metaphor. We are born with gifts, hide them (or have them hidden for us) as children, and spend much of our adult years seeking, uncovering, and rediscovering them.

In the 'Tin Man', DG's mother whispers the secret, of how to find the emerald, into DG's ear and uses magic to hide it there. Sometimes our light is hidden for us by our protectors when we are children, sometimes we hide our gifts on purpose to avoid the chastisment of unbelieving people. In DG's case, the emerald held the key to empowerment and it was hidden so that it would not be used for self interest.

Are we to find that hidden place 'somewhere over the rainbow', or are we to stay where we are and look within ourselves for the answers?

Tin Man - About The Mini-Series

A re-imaging of L. Frank Baum's Classic

SCI FI Channel Wire says
"Tin Man centers on DG, a young woman plucked from her humdrum life and thrust into The Outer Zone (the O.Z.), a fantastical realm filled with wonder, but oppressed by dark magic. DG discovers her true identity, battles evil winged monkey-bats and attempts to fulfill her destiny. Her perilous journey begins on the fabled Old Road that leads to a wizard known as the Mystic Man. Along the way, she is joined by "Glitch," an odd man missing half his brain; "Raw," a quietly powerful wolverine-like creature longing for inner courage; and "Cain," a heroic former policeman (known in the O.Z. as a "Tin Man"), who is seeking vengeance for his scarred heart. Ultimately, DG's destiny leads her to a showdown with the wicked sorceress Azkadellia, whose ties to DG are closer than anyone could have imagined."

Tin Man is available on DVD - And, do not pass up the opportunity to get the SoundTrack as well. The music is a spiritual journey of its own.
"Composer Simon Boswell has delivered a powerfully dramatic score that contrasts Harold Arlen's classic, magical impressions of a merry old land called Oz."~Editorial Review/Amazon.com

The Deeper Meaning

I grew up watching The Wizard of Oz at least once a year from the time I was a little girl up until I heard about Tin Man. I was sitting on the edge of my couch waiting for this to begin. The previews of the program reminded me of "The Tenth Kingdom", which is another made for tv movie that I enjoyed.

Last year I watched Tin Man (an original Sci-Fi Channel mini-series released on DVD in December 2007). I have watched it about four times so far and hope to have an opportunity to see it again, read the screenplay, and to nourish this thirst that I have for the deeper meaning that is hidden within this story.

If you have ever believed that everything would be better; if only you were in a different place, with different people, in different circumstances, you are not alone.

DG grows up feeling that there is something more. She is never able to pinpoint what 'it' is. She just knows that there is something more and there is an emptiness that she carries around with her everywhere she goes.

When I have found myself believing that everything would be better if only the circumstances were different, I would often stay in a state of 'if only.'

America - Tin Man Song

In the classic song "The Tin Man", the band America shares an insight that fast became a source of guidance whenever anyone asked for that which was hidden from them.

The lyrics say...

"...oz never did give nothing to the tin man, That he didnt, didnt already have"

When we ask for anything, and are looking outside of ourselves to find it (as the tin man did ), we may be surprised to find that we had it all the time.

Hidden in plain sight-Hidden within ourselves.

I hope you enjoy this music video during your stay.

The Light Was Hidden

"The secret to finding it now lives inside you".

I have learned that we each have a 'light' hidden within us, a gift that has been waiting for us to discover it. Waiting for the chance to brighten up every dark place, everywhere, no matter where we are. It is waiting for us to find it, to allow it to guide us through whatever our circumstance is at the moment or to guide us to wherever we are going on our path (our journey, our calling).

We do not need to find the place 'somewhere over the rainbow' in order to use this light. DG's mother said:

"The secret to finding it now lives inside you."

She had purposely hidden DG's light so skillfully that even DG couldn't see it herself. The light was hidden, the secrets were hidden, and the strength to walk through the darkness was hidden from her.

I realized that we are all like this; we have a light that flows through us. I wondered why our light was hidden; how it became this way, and when do we learn to let this light shine (or 'flow through us') to assist us in our lives right where we are, or to guide us to where we are supposed to be?

Why is Our Light Hidden From Us?

When we were children our light could be seen by all.

Why is our light hidden? There are several possibilities for this; here are a couple of them.

1. Sometimes our light is hidden for us by our protectors when we are children.

In the 'Tin Man', DG's mother whispers the secret of how to find the emerald into her ear and uses magic to hide it there. In everyday life, the magic at work is love. Loving adults find ways to help children hide their light because they are protecting them from the darkness, allowing their light to grow strong before having to confront the things that they are called to transform.

These efforts are well meaning. Yet we find a time in our lives when the protections that we needed as children are standing in the way of us reaching our goals as adults. In some cases, these obstacles actually affect our health and well being.

We must find a way to let our light shine, to let it flow through us now.

2. Sometimes we hide our light from the world and from ourselves.

I am sure there are hundreds of reasons for this. We may feel overwhelmed by the darkness (not always evil). Sometimes we are faced with a circumstance that is more challenging than we are prepared to handle. Still other times, the challenges that we are hiding from are not our own. They may belong to our elders and we protect ourselves from them while we are children.

To Have The Light Flow Through You - Remember

"Remember what it felt like, when you were a little girl, to have the light flow through you"~Ahamo-The Seeker (DG's father)

When DG was trying to find the secret that had been hiden within, it was suggested by her father to 'Remember'.

Have you ever remembered an important aspect of yourself, that long ago was very important to you? Before you changed yourself as a result of being influenced by someone else? Have you ever remembered how it felt to "have the light flow through you?"

I remember when I was very young, I would talk to trees. I could carry on a conversation with a tree for the whole afternoon. While I was engaged in these conversations I knew I wasn't 'hearing' replies, I knew I wasn't 'seeing' the tree's body language. Yet, I felt it. I could feel the tree actively engaged in the conversation with me. I learned so much from those discussions.

One of the last times I openly had this kind of discussion was on a camping trip with the youth group from our church. I was mid-teen, loved camping, enjoyed the outdoors, and loved the lakeside campground.

I was sitting on a rock, by the water, watching the sunset. I was singing a folk song that I enjoyed (Blowing in the Wind), and I could hear the water and the trees humming the song with me.

When did I forget that I could talk to trees?

More importantly;
When did I remember again?

Our Light Must Find a Way

We can only keep our light hidden for awhile.

We can dream of that special place 'somewhere over the rainbow', we can romanticize what it will be like once we get there, and we can 'feel' better when we are thinking about it.

However, when we find out that the light flowing through us must find a way to the surface, must find a way to brighten the place that we are at; When we find out that the light will guide us to where we are suppose to be, then suddenly we are able to transform anyplace into the vision of that dream place that lies 'somewhere' else.

Was Oz just a dream?

I believe that each of us has a 'light' that is within us, that at some point may be hidden or we have found it and are learning to use it in our daily lives. My fondest wish is that each of us find and learn to use the light, so that we will be better prepared to walk through our journey's with courage, love, and wisdom.

If you have ever believed that everything would be better; if only you were in a different place, with different people, in different circumstances...

Perhaps you have the light within you hidden still.

Discover your light, shine it all around you, and watch your places, people, and circustances transform right before your eyes.

Your hearts desire has been hidden within you all along.

The Wizard of Oz: More Than Just a Children's Story

Florida State University Website

"Who would have ever thought that a story that seems obvious that it was written specifically for children, would have had so many hidden messages in it? The Wizard of Oz is more than just a children's story; it is an allegory for many different ideas."

The Spiritual Analogy in The Wizard of OZ stories and characters

Whatever faith, in modern times or days of old, the story and the metaphors come alive and are easily adapted to the experience of human discovery.

A spiritual journey that will enlighten and empower us throughout the ages.

The following books are recommended for further indepth study of the concepts shared in this analogy. While they are focused on the classic version of the Wizard of Oz, the studies are still applicable to the modern version of the story. I would suggest that you watch the movie, listen to the soundtrack and read a couple of these books as well.

The books each have a primary focus:
The storyteller perspective,
The Zen approach,
The Christian approach, and
The Psychological behaviorial approach.

Each of the perspectives use metaphors known to the approach that they are most familiar with. For the openminded awareness seekers, I highly recommend reading all four perspectives so that you will come away with a balanced world view of spiritual growth in general and how it is symbolized in the Wizard of Oz specifically.

I haven't seen The Tin Man but after reading this lens I certainly will. Read The Wizard of Oz
many times as a child and older. I believe that all the great children's classics can be understood on many different levels. They are definitely not just for kids!

Approximently three weeks ago I heard through my spirit "follow the yellow brick road". I said to myself follow the yellow brick road.... My husband, my daughter and son-in-law went to a local resteraunt and we were seated by the Wizard of Oz poster. I showed my husband and daughter because I had already shared with them my earlier experience. My daughter pointed up higher and said look up. There was a huge bumper sticker that was all black with huge letters follow the yellow brick road, and above that in smaller letters was over the rainbow. As I read possibly hidden light I recall the conversation with the waiter. He said do you want me to turn the blind down the sun is shining in your eyes. I replied NO, I don't shine too much anymore, leave the light on me. I believe I will go to a bookstore today and purchase one of the suggested books to help me follow the yellow brick road.
Thank you for having this lens on the web.

What a lovely lens. I haven't watched this movie but it sounds very interesting.

And you've really made me think about my light. I've never forgotten it, but I don't share it often and hardly ever look at it anymore. At least, that was the case until recently.

Beautiful lens!
I loved Tin Man. It made me stop and think...rethink my own light. I didn't really hide it, I just kind of ignore it sometimes.
Years of habit, I suppose. It was hidden for me at an early age, to protect me.
However, as I grew older, I found it again and didn't really care that people knew I had it.
It's really not a scary thing, is it? It is rather beautiful to know you have a gift.
Thanks.
