Tinnitus Association - What do They Do?

The American Tinnitus Association defines tinnitus, also known as ringing in the ears, as "the perception of sound in the ears or head where no external source is present." It is estimated that 66 million people in the United States have been affected by it in one way or another. Of this number, 12 million are seriously affected to the extent that they have been deprived of living their normal lives.

Apparently, with the number of people that it affects, ear ringing is not uncommon. But here is the ironic part: majority of its sufferers do not know that such a condition exists until they have been diagnosed of it and have been told so by their doctors.

Providing funds on researches and helping disseminate information on the condition is a tinnitus association like ATA and other related associations from various countries around the world. While they provide reliable information, they also act as support groups for the sufferers of ear ringing. Websites for these associations have been made available, paving the way for easier access of information relating to the condition.

The causes of the ringing noise are generally medical conditions. The main causes are noise-induced cochlear damage, stress, sinus problems or allergies, and Meniere's Disease. Other known causes include presbycusis of age-associated hearing loss, earwax impaction, head injuries, thyroid disorder, and vitamin B12 deficiency.

The unwanted sound can be soft enough to be ignored, but there are unfortunate ones who hear it as frequently as 24 hours a day. If it is not dealt with properly, its effects can really be serious. Sufferers should make sure that they do not fall prey to the classic tinnitus cycle. The cycle starts from you experiencing a ringing noise, depriving you of sleep. The following day, you easily get exhausted and stressed out, which increases the level of the unwanted sound.

Various remedies have been made available, from devices like maskers to alternative treatments like homeopathic remedies and herbal preparations.

Researches are being conducted to find a cure for ear ringing as well as the best methods on coping with it. A tinnitus association can then help disseminate the recent updates regarding the condition and other important things that need to be understood about it. Just like almost anything in life, our knowledge of the condition is our best weapon against it.
