You don't hear much of the condition tinnitus. I've been to the local doctors about the constant buzzing sound in my ears, the doctor seemed baffled and didn't offer any kind of constuctive support - I don't think he was even aware of the condition.

What's this tinnitus you speak of? For those of you who don't know what tinnitus is, I'll tell you. Tinnitus is often some kind of buzzing or ringing some people get that originates in the ear or head. Most of us will experience some tinnitus in our life times, but for sufferers of this nasty condition they often experience these sounds constantly. It's estimated that a massive 12 million Americans suffer with the condition to a certain extent, whilst 1 million suffer to the point of not being able to complete simple daily tasks.

There Are Two Types Of Tinnitus

Subjective & Objective!

Subjective tinnitus is when you're the only person who can hear the sound, and objective tinnitus is when you're doctor may be able to hear the sound if they listen closely using the proper equipment.

Cause Of Tinnitus

Why are you getting that buzzing in ear?

A damaged nerve inside the ear is what usually causes tinnitus. Usually the nerve gets damaged due to old age, but constantly being in loud environments can also cause the problem. By loud environments I mean people who work with machinery, people who work in a nightclub and are exposed to loud music. Objective tinnitus may be caused by a different medical problem, such as a circulatory problem or a tumor in a blood vessel. In this case you'd have to sort out the root of the problem to be able to treat tinnitus. Some uncommon causes include allergies, head injury, neck injury, diabetes and medicines such as sedatives, antidepressants, aspirin can also cause tinnitus.

There are many remedies around that can help tinnitus, these include avoiding foods, thorough cleaning of the ear and just basic remedies that you can do yourself at home.

Relax! Stress is known to make tinnitus worse. Learn some stress management techniques and apply them daily. Deep, slow breathing is an easy way to relieve tension.

Avoid loud environments. Loud sounds around you may trigger off your tinnitus. Carry some foam earplugs, that fit nicely inside your ear, so you can ignore sound around you. An MP3 player is perfect too, aslong as you don't have it too loud!

Distractions. Get distracted! Meaning keep busy so you don't focus on your problem. If you're thinking about the problem, you're attracting the annoying sounds.

Now you wouldn't think your diet could have a big impact on tinnitus, but apparently it does. Cut out as much salt as you can from your diet. Salt causes fluid to build up inside the ear, which will make your tinnitus worse. Whilst we're on diet too. Cut out caffiene drinks and alcohol, oh and stop smoking too!

Record something relaxing on a tape, like running water. And play it whilst you drop off to sleep, not too loud thought obviously. Just loud enough to distract you from the sound of the buzzing / ringing in your ears

Drugs That Help Tinnitus

Are drugs the real answer to tinnitus?

I get people asking me on Internet forums what drugs can they take to help tinnitus. The answer is probably none.

A common cause of tinnitus is drugs, so by taking drugs to help tinnitus, it could be making it worse. But everyone is different, some drugs have different reaction with people. So whilst a certain drug didn't help another sufferer of tinnitus, it doesn't mean that drug won't work for you.

I advise all sufferers to speak a to medical expert before taking any drugs to help tinnitus.

It has been reported by more than one sufferer of tinnitus that xanax & ativan has helped them alot in curing their tinnitus. But you should keep the daily intake to a smaller level as possible to risk becoming addicted.

Do what reliefs you like take a walk or take a drive and visit the zoo or eat out with your friends. For me I like salt in my food try mrs.dash or pepper.especially on fried eggs or poached eggs. listen to the birds in the morning and how happy they singing.stay away from canned vegatable, or any thing thats canned -there filled with sodium, also hot dogs and campell cans.
