Tipi Living is Like a Vacation!

I lived in a Sioux style tipi for the better part of a year. Temperatures of 20 degrees in North Dakota in the United States of America gets a bit too cold, even with a pit fire & a box stove. It wasn't all that bad in a 20 below sleeping bag, I was throwing my bag off and on while camping in the great outdoors. A 20' in diameter tipi is large enough to sleep 6-8 people comfortably. There were 2 of us sleeping head to head, so we could both be by the fire. Tipi living isn't for everyone, it takes much work. ~

Many hunters own a tipi or a tent for a comfortable warm place to sleep in no-man's-land. They use the smaller size lodges that are easier to transport and set up, or leave the tipi set up year around. A good tipi will last about 10 years if taken care of porperly.  ~

A true tipi is always a tilted cone that is steeper at the back. On the front side with the gentler slope the smoke hole is extended down with two smoke flaps or wings that flank the smoke hole and they are supported by outside poles that are movable to regulate the draft that carries off the smoke. There is no comparison with the true Plains Indian tipi and the primitive symmetrical cone tipi or tent that is smoky. ~~~ A Lensography! ~~~

I share about the visions I have experienced in a tipi fire and coals. When I can I will tell more. Its not a myth! ~

Tipi means: dwell!

Never be ashamed to shed the tear of sorrow or of joy in you own home. ~ Me

The way a tipi is constructed makes it stand strong in high winds. My Uncle Eddie made his own tipi which was originally for the grand kids to play in and enjoy. Now it sits in the yard for show and is really an eye catcher from the road as people pass by.

Tipis usually have log poles for construction because they are stronger and give more support. You could build a tipi out of pvc, but the construction won't be as strong and the tipi will sag as the pvc bends, and it will bend because it does not have enough support. - I have seen construction of the log poles using half wood pole and half pvc joined together, and this does bend also. ~

Welcome, to Tipi the Tipigal site!

Tipi Painting that I Love from a Free Clipart Site

During the annual Sun Dance tipis faced the the center of the circle. Tipis where always pitched East to meet the Morning Star and the Sun's holy light that came in through the smoke hole and the door. Wind usually does not blow from the east.

For colder weather an inner liner is used in a tipi. The Native Americans would stuff straw, dead grass, leaves or whatever was available for added insulation. I have used dried leaves between the inner and outer liners. The liners can be 4' to 12' high or depending on how high you want them to be. It really does add good insulation. In the spring the leaves need to be removed as soon as possible if they have taken on moisture, so that they don't cause any rot to the canvas. It is a good idea to lift the sides of the tipi's outer and inner liner to allow moisture in the ground to dry, keeping the inside area dry.

How to keep the heat in a tipi: good question

Tipis are actually pretty easy to keep warm in cool weather.

What is called an ozon is used to keep the heat in where people sleep. I have used a canvas ozon (or ozan) that is draped above my bed like a canopy. The heat from the open fire is held under the canopy longer, instead of just going out the top of the tipi. A tipi is designed to be like a chimney where the smoke rises and so does the heat. Trapping the heat in where you sleep is a great idea when temperatures are colder. An ozon can keep your sleeping area 10 to 20 degrees warmer depending on the size of the fire and other conditions. I prefer to be warm!

This is Tipi the Tipigal or Susie Lehto

There I am sitting on my bed and enjoying the warm fire.
You can see how the ozon canopies over my bed.
Behind me you can see the inner liner of the tipi.
If you look above the ozon, you'll see the outer liner,
and of course of the tipi lodge polls. - I tell you,
I feel like a princes in this picture with a canopy bed.

My bed is on a wood platform off the ground, and I
have a thick mat and lots of soft blankets to sleep on,
and a nice warm sleeping bag that is fitting for the season.

Pink Ribbons on the Tips of the Tipi Polls

This is a picture of the very first time the tipi was set up. The poles are still light wood color and haven't been darkened by smoke yet. Ribbons are often attached to the tips of the poles for decoration. The ribbons also serve a purpose to show which way the wind is blowing. - The smoke flaps on the tipi need to be repossession from time to time, so the smoke will rise out of the top. I have been smoked out of a tipi more than once before learning about controlling the smoke with the flaps. The smoke flaps have a smoke flap pole that is used to reach the points of the flaps. The tip of the smoke flaps have a pocket that the pole fits into. The flaps can be easily opened and closed to whatever amount is needed. - It becomes an art when working with the wind!

I Grew Up At Kabetogama Lake In A Wildreness

Image: Some of Tipi's pictures on bedroom wall at home.

I painted plywood, decoupaged pictures on, and added a native leather belt with a silver buckle that was a gift.

Kabetogama is a Chippewa word meaning "rough waters" and lives up to its name. The lake is 18 miles long, a maximum width of 4 miles, is 25,760 acres in size with a maximum depth of 80 feet, it has over 200 islands, and 77 miles of shoreline. The entire lake is in the only national park in Minnesota's "Voyageurs National Park". VNP takes up a much larger area with 218,055 acres with 38% being fresh water lakes.

One of my favorite places is Chief Woodenfrog Campground at Kabetogama, named after Chief Woodenfrog. My first exposure to a tipi was at Ellsworth Rock Garden a historical grotto created by J.E. Ellsworth on the north shore of the lake. The grotto is only accessible by water or float plane. VNP has some of the oldest exposed rock in the world. Kabetogama is the gateway to Voyageurs and it is free to use. The ancient rocks, water, and towering trees may seem indestructible, but the fragile resources sincerely asks you to use them with care when you are there.

I have created web-pages with more information about Kabetogama and VNP.

I have had Spiritual Experiences in a Tipi

Thought I would share of it with you

I heard the legend of American Indian's that saw and heard things in a fire. I always kept that in the back of my mind. Would I have ever really taken it to heart unless I ... had the experience myself? Yes, because different cultures experience spiritual encounters differently according to traditions and beliefs. There is no reality, only perception!

While watching the fire and the coals burning in the tipi, I have seen the coals and fire become alive with different animals and a person as they speak. I have seen the bear, the wolf, the eagle, and white buffalo; and I have seen one person who spoke to me several times with much love. - I have had many spiritual encounters, so I know them and where they are from. - The coals have been the main place where I have seen and heard when the fire has died down and the coals are very hot. They are visions of spiritual things past and present and future. These visions are spiritual gifts that I was given to bless me and they have.

I saw the wolf running with it's tongue hanging out the left side of it's mouth. It never did look at me and just kept running through a wild forest. I must have watched the wolf run for 5 minutes or more. The wolf kept running while I saw the forest changing, until it ran out of sight. It is something like watching a video screen but in the coals of the fire ... and I have always been aware of what was being shown to me as a gift.

* Tipi's Home and Garden Store
-----------------------------------------

As the wolf was running out of sight I kept watching behind it to see if something was chasing it. Then I saw the White Buffalo appear in the distance. The buffalo was charging fast in a cloud of dust and once it fully appeared it came to a halt. It stood and watched as the wolf ran out of it's sight. I did not see any more that night, I went to sleep knowing I was blessed.

Inside of Tipi Picture With A Warm Fire

It is so peaceful inside a tipi with a fire to gaze at, while it creates rich tones.

The ground represents Mother Earth, the sides of the tipi represent the sky and the poles...the prayers that go to the Great Spirit. It was customary to have an earth alter behind the fire where sage or incense was burned as a ceremonial offering. Sometimes the best cut of meat was burned on the alter as thanks, or in the fire.

There is no running water in a tipi. If your fortunate to be set up by a lake or river, you have a great place for bathing. If not a solar shower is what I have used and they work real well. You can lay the shower bag full of water in the sun with the black side up and the sun's heat will warm the water in the solar bag nicely. Or you can heat your water by the camp fire and put it in the bag. Than you take what is known as a Navy shower by getting wet, turn the water off, lather up, and rise off.

There are no flushing toilets in a tipi, so what I have used is a portable potty, that can be set up inside the tipi wherever you choose to call the bathroom. A curtain can be easily designed for privacy in a tipi if that is desired. Deodorizing pouches can be purchased from camping outfitter stores to put in the potty, but they are easy to empty and keep clean. Some people like to purchase a little Peepee Teepee to use as their out house.

* The beds need to be far enough away from the fire because of coals that get sparked out. Its best to use hard woods that don't spark like soft woods do. Many use Gas Fires!

A Real Big Tipi! ~ One I would love to visit!

We could have a real big fire inside of a tipi this large. There would be plenty of room to live inside of it very comfortably. - I would love to be a guest in this tipi. - I am very much impressed! - This had to be a massive tipi making project. I can see that the lodge poles are quiet large in diameter and they would need to be to support that much canvas. There is a lot more canvas on a tipi than there is on a large sail boat. A tipi really needs to be staked down well. I would repeat that many times...because it is very important so that the tipi isn't blown over by the wind. - Been there! Number one thing to do when setting up a tipi, stake it down right away. It would take 20 guys to put this tipi up!

Buffalo skulls where used in tipis for ceremonies

I have a buffalo skull that a friend gave me. He found it in the Badlands of North Dakota when he was hunting. Thanks Dave!

Now, let's follow on down the trail! - Are you listening to one of the music videos? They really do go well with the theme of this lens. Morning Song or Evening song! I like to listen to them both myself, and do quit often! Very peaceful sounds!

Native American Red Rug ~ Follow the Tipi Trail

Rugs are very popular to have in a tipi, and easy to shake out and keep clean. If you're going to have a tipi, a lanolium floor is easy to keep clean also.

Also, having a wood platform to make your bed on in a tipi is a great idea. It will keep you off the ground when it is damp and cold. - The Native Americans used to dig a pit under their beds and put hot coals in the pit at night to keep warm during the winter months. - I have never tried that, but it would work real well and would need some fire safety.

Picture of Tipi's Tipi ~ One Beautiful Night

The moon was full and bright,

Inside of the Tipi the fire glowed!

It was comfortable and cozy inside and ...

there was no need for clothes.

My children had a Tipi growing up!

It was a gift from my sister Shelly to my children. Now my Grand Children can enjoy it!

A Child's Tipi Sets Up Easy Anywhere!

You can see the construction of the lodge poles that are joined together at the top. The canvas is then put over the poles. The tipi can be staked into the ground the same way that a large tipi is staked down. What the Indians used to do and this method is still used and works well... A pebble is placed in the canvas and tied in with rope at the bottom of the canvas and then fastened to the stakes in the ground. It takes some strength to get it tied in tightly, but practice makes it easier. The tipi will then be secure and you won't be putting holes in the canvas. Kids love to go camping in the back yard in tents and teepees are a lot of fun for play and over nights. A child's tipi would be about the same as setting up a pup tent.

Children's Play Tipi with a Fire Light Inside.

Children can create a sense of adventure in a Tipi indoors or outdoors...

Tipis are meant to be decorated with colorful paints, so let your kids personalize their tipi with patterns and hand-prints. Acrylic paints work real well and can be purchased in small jars at craft stores. That is a nice fun project that kids love to do and they are so creative!

Originally pigments were used to paint the Plains Indian's dreams on the tipi. Now house paints are used for decorating a tipi that will be used to with-stand weather.

Solar Showers are Great for Tipi Bathing

Solar showers work very well to heat water, it'll get hot!

A solar shower can be hung on a tree limb for outdoor bathing. If you prefer your privacy it can be hung in a tipi with a curtain as well. To shower in a tipi, it would be good to have an area where the water drains outside under the tipi liner, or have a large floor pan of some kind to catch the water. ~ Learn how to shower with much less water.

I love my Tipi Creepers! They are soft inside and the sheep skins seem to hug my feet in comfort. They are nice and warm, so I keep them handy for when my feet get chilled. I usually am taking them off and on because I like to sit Indian Style, cross-legged. They were a nice gift that I received from my brother and his wife for my birthday one year. The fur inside doesn't mat down and they keep their shape. I spray mine with water-proofing, if the ground is damp my Tipi Creeps won't get wet. I'm sure it would-not hurt them at all to get wet a little.

Serenity ~ In Harmony With Nature ~ Peaceful ~

A Tipi really is all that!...

I can just smell the fresh air out in the country and hear the birds singing, and fish jumping in the water. Squirrels running to and fro chasing each other up and down a tree. I love to be in nature and be a part of it! It grounds me with the earth.

Tipis were used in the Great Plains

"Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children." Ancient Indian Proverb

A tipi, also tepee or teepee, is a conical tent originally made of animal skins or birch bark and popularized by the Plains Indians. Tipis are associated with Native Americans in general, but Native Americans from places other than the Great Plains used different types of dwellings.

Tipis were transported with horses from place to place on the Great Plains as the people traveled in search of the great buffalo. The buffalo sheltered, feed, and clothed the people.

Buffalo on the Great Plains in North Dakota

Ten to twenty buffalo hides were used to cover a tipi, always an even number. The hides were sewn together with buffalo leather stripes.

You will see plenty of buffalo on the Great Plains in North Dakota. This would be a wonderful place to set up a tipi and there may very well have been. The Great Plains are good hunting grounds still. Many arrowheads and other instruments used as tools are found in these regions, as well as buffalo skulls.

Tip Is...I Believe in Angels

When I became a Squid Angel on October 13th 2009 and got my Angel Badge added to all of my lenses and bio-page, I took it seriously. I have had real encounters with angels and have shared some about that on Tipi Is...I believe in Angels. As a Squid Angel I will conduct myself as one that blesses. Squid Angels have the power to give a lens a Thumbs Up or a Thumbs Down.

Giving a lens Stars, Favoring and signing the guest isn't often enough to really bless a lens that I believe is truly great. I will take my time to do all of those and go the extra mile to lensroll it to some or all of my lenses, and feature it where it is appropriate. I will tweet the lens on Twitter, send it to a friend by email, and sometimes post it in SquidU. Guess what happens? ~ That lens rises in rank and rating, traffic, the health of the lens increases and that person who created it prospers a little bit by my goodwill.

"Beloved, I wish above all things that you proper and be in good health, even as your soul prospers." ~ God's Will
