Welcome, to Tipi's Book Reviews!

I'm Tipi the Tipigal

Books are great, aren't they?

Someone once told me that if I want to write well, I need to read a lot of books. That sounds like wisdom to me. Writers read a lot of books before they begin to write well. I'm not an avid reader, but I'm not looking to write a best seller that Hollywood would base a movie on.

These books that I have reviewed here are ones that I recommend because they are good books. I believe they are worth checking out, if they are what you are interested in. I would like to know what kind of books interest you. I would really like to get to know a little about you and your interests./b>

"The Education of Little Tree" Book Review

By Lensmaster 'sittonbull' Posted April 23, 2009

The Education of "Little Tree" by Forrest Carter. Gramma said when you come across something good, first thing you do is share it with whoever you can find; that way, the good spreads out where no telling it will go. Which is right!

Little Tree learns from his grans, who raise him, the lessons and emotions experienced by the human animal as well as the magnificent truths to be found in nature. One of the best books I ever read! Should be required reading in public and private schools. The book was made into a movie.

Carter also wrote the book made into a movie starring Clint Eastwood ...called, "The Outlaw Josie Wales"

Sittonbull chooses words wisely, he says a lot in a few words!

There is much humor, even tragedy, great tenderness and most of all...love, in this book. Many people have received much education from their grandparents that schools don't offer. Little Tree has expressed it as well, very good reading.

"Nickel and Dimed" Book Review

By Lensmaster 'TheGreenerMe' Posted May 08, 2009

Last year I read a really interesting book called "Nickel and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich. The author goes undercover and gets jobs trying to live off the money she made at minimum wage wherever she went. It's unbelievable how far people can stretch their dollar, and what conditions they have to put up with when working. A sad glimpse into the real life of millions of people across America, I read it from cover to cover in just days.

Great idea for a lens!

A superb book called "Nickel and Dimed". Barbara Ehrenreich expertly peels away the layers of self-denial, self-interest and self-protection that insulate the rich from poor; the served from the servers, the housed from the homeless.

"Stars in Their Courses" Book Review

By Lensmaster 'Drifter0658' Posted April 23, 2009

Stars In Their Courses~Shelby Foote
Shelby had a wonderful voice in his writing and in person. You would recognize him through his narratives in Ken Burns' Civil War documentary. Foote provided not only about 80% of the narration, but a large chunk of the material as well.

The material comes from his massive work The Civil War: A Narrative. Stars In Their Courses is the center stone of the three volume, million word work. It is also the only book published that was taken directly from the three books. It is the story of the Battle Of Gettysburg.

Foote was a historical novelist and gave a wonderfully casual tone to this work. He painstakingly kept the work non-fiction through years of research (it took him 20 years to write the 3 books), yet it reads as if you were talking to someone who was there.

ACK! Not engouh room. Just read it!

"Stars in Their Courses"

by Shelby Foote

Stars in Their Courses : The Gettysburg Campaign, June-July 1863

Amazon Price: $14.28 (as of 11/27/2009)Buy Now

Shelby Foote, who cut such a courtly figure in Ken Burns's PBS series The Civil War, is an uncommonly graceful writer as well, and this careful study of the 1863 Gettysburg campaign assumes the contours of a classical tragedy. Foote positions readers on the field of battle itself, among swirling smoke and clattering grapeshot, and invites us to feel for ourselves its hellishness: "men on both sides were hollering as they milled about and fired, some cursing, others praying ... not a commingling of shouts and yells but rather like a vast mournful roar." Foote's fine book is history as literature, and a welcome addition to any Civil War buff's library. - Amazon's Review

"Tipis Tepees Teepees"

by Linda Holley - Linda is an authority on tipis and has written one book.

I thought that tipi living just couldn't be captured in a book and had to be experienced only. Linda has captured this in her experiences and this book manages to do just that too!

"Whales Passing"

by Eve Bunting - A book that I love!

A beautifully illustrated book about a boy and his dad watching whales passing, as they stood on the banks of the shore. Captures the essence of the moments spent in a thought provoking style.

"Reading Magic" Book Review

By 'Shelly' Posted May 16, 2009

Reading Magic by Mem Fox is a book that will stir anyone with children in their life to read, Read, READ to them at every opportunity. Mem particulary encourages bed time reading activites as being vital, but she encourages reading several times through the day as well. Best of all, she strongly encourages us to make these reading opportunites memorable experiences that will cause both the reader and the child to want more. Illustrations and pictures are there to linger over and discuss as part of a wonderful reading event. Expression, character voices, sounds, pauses, body language (yes, while reading), intonation, and so much more are covered. "Reading Magic" will change your level of experience in reading to children. Mem encourages reading to children from age 0 on. One of the issues that Mem covered that surprised me was that simply allowing a child to watch TV or a video isn't enough. There is something special about that shared book that technology can't duplicate.

The underlying motivation for reading to children is to set the stage to transition them into being great readers. The wonderful times spent with a child and a book are second to none in developing early reading skills according to Mem Fox. That's the "Magic" part.

In the book "Reading Magi: Why Reading Aloud to Our Children Will Change Their Lives Forever", a bestselling picture book by author Mem Fox tells the benefits of reading to preschoolers and newborns. Mem gives suggestions for helping children learn to read by themselves. The line drawings that are by Judy Horacek do inject some levity.

I story told from the stand point of Seaman the Newfoundland dog, who was on the trail with Lewis and Clark in their historic expedition. This book is educational and is perfect for those children who love history.

"What Am I? Bugs" Book Review

Posted August 15, 2009 bi Lensmaster 'mbrownauthor'

"What Am I? Bugs" by William Sawyers. I purchased this book through Lulu.com as an e-book download. This is a book of riddles about bugs for ages 5 and up. This book really gets children to think about which bug is being described. The pictures are adorable, plus after every bug picture there is a page where you can color that bug and another picture that allows you to finish drawing the bug. An example of a riddle: "I'm a neat bug to see at night. And I just love to fly. I was told if you put me in a jar I could help you see afar." What am I? Answer: a firefly. A great interactive book for children!
