Book Review of Tipis Tepees Teepees by Linda A Holley

Linda Holley visited on September 27, 2009 and left very nice comments and a word of encouragement for me. Thank you Linda! This book captures what it is like to live in a tipi. It has some fun stories and experiences in tipis over the years written by Linda Holley. I especially enjoyed the chapter entitled "Why People Never Camp with Me." Tipis Tepees Teepees has excellent diagrams and photos of tipis, and interviews with a diverse group of tipi enthusiasts (and much more...), this book is remarkable from cover to cover. A delightful book in paper back or for ... Kindle Readers on Amazon!

"Tipis Tepees Teepees" by Linda Holley

Tipi is actually the proper spelling ~ Tipi ~ means: Dwell

Tipis, Tepees, Teepees covers more than the history of the tipi. It also cover how to take proper care of a tipi and the many different styles. How to pitch a tipi, advice on buying a tipi, etc. The book has several nice black and white pictures, a bibliography, a glossary, and an index. It is a one-of-a-kind guide that I recommended to anyone, and everyone who is curious to learn more about tipis.

Tipis Tepees Teepees by Linda Holley

A tipi, also tepee or teepee, is a conical tent originally made of animal skins or birch bark and popularized by the Native Americans of the Great Plains. Tipis are stereotypically associated with Native Americans in general, but Native Americans from places other than the Great Plains used different types of dwellings.

A very informative book on a range of aspects of Tipi history, construction and use which is well thought out and balanced in terms of content by Linda Holley.

From the first tipis made of buffalo or elk hide to the cloth tipis of today, Tipis, Tepees, Teepes is a fresh look at the rich history and evolution of this ancient dwelling that has been used since the dawn of human civilization. Today, tipis can be found all over the world-from North America to Asia to Australia-in dozens of cultures. Tipis are currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity because of their unique qualities. They are comfortable to live in for long periods, durable, weather resistant, and easy to transport. New synthetic materials and innovative construction techniques make tipis adaptable to a variety of climates and living conditions. Considerations when buying a new or used tipi are reviewed, and, for the more adventuresome, step-by-step instructions detail how to construct a well-built tipi. Different tipi styles, materials to make a tipi, and ways to decorate a tipi are explored. A plethora of drawings, diagrams, and photographs take the guesswork out of the process. In addition, ways to care for a tipi, transport a tipi, and pitch a tipi are also explored. Allow your mind to be opened up to the romance of the beautiful tipi; allow your heart to be opened to a life closer to the land. Tipis were a vital part of the cultures of prehistoric peoples and they offer the same benefits to us today.

Linda A. Holley has spent most of her life studying tipis and Native American culture. She graduated from Florida State University with a BS and MS in Art Education/Constructive Design. In 1970, she became an art, science, and history teacher, but she is now retired after thirty-four years. She has over thirty years of experience making tipis.

Linda A Holley wrote ~

"From reading the material here....thanks. As the writer of this book I am amazed at this site. Thanks for the nice comments on my book. It took lots of experience in making tipis and many years to do this. And, I am still adding more information to the book. So, you can say it is still a work in progress".

... and in the guest book...

Gee, Thanks for all the nice comments on my book. I was taking a trip on the internet and just happen to stumble into your site. You look like you are as passionate about tipis as I am. Tipis are a never ending story that I am still writing. Keep up the work on your site......they are an animal that needs to be coninuously fed....with good material. If you want to see more on tipis I have a web site at www.tipi.org. The other site www.tipis-tepees-teepees.com is not working properly and is very stagnate at the moment. But I am always feeding the animal on the first site to try to keep it fuent and try to post updates of new inforamtion on the book.

There is nothing like a night or a day in a tipi. :-)

This is a great book for those who love Tipis!

What a great idea to build a tipi in your back garden. Go for it, you would love it AJ. Think of it as an extra bedroom with an open fire. So nice!

I just felt like taking a mini vacation and enjoy the music and book cover picture here--it is just beautiful and it's about as close to living in a tipi--I'm just not as adventurous as you Sue! I know you would probably live in one year around given a choice--but then you'd have to bring in electicity because of your Squidoo addiction--for a little ambiance you could always add a lava light!

I'm sorry for this person's behavior in this guest book. They have written the same thing in several of my guest books with a link to a site that I will not go see. I reported them for abuse, because Squidoo will not put up with a member that is doing spam. They will not be a member long on Squidoo. I'm very sorry!
