Tips for Buying CCTV Cameras

It's easy to buy a security camera system that is the top of the line with more features than you'll ever need or use. It's just as easy to be so budget conscious that you buy a CCTV system that doesn't adequately meet your needs and effectively becomes worthless.

There are a few things to consider before you venture off to buy a camera system.
- The most important thing is to think about your future needs as well as your current needs. Will you be adding buildings, rooms, or land that you'll need to cover?
- What kind of video quality will you need and in what lighting? Think about HD quality recording in light and dark areas. IR cameras are very affordable but HD Infrared recording can be costly.
- How big of an area do your cameras need to effectively cover? Zoom and viewing area are very important. The bigger the area, the more expensive the camera you'll need.
- Are you installing the cameras yourself? Wireless vs. wired camera systems play an important role in the buying process. Wireless cameras are easy to install and don't usually need a professional. Wired CCTV systems can be a bit more challenging and require more work to install. Professional installers are often called when using a wired surveillance system. The biggest drawback to wireless cameras are the quality of the video feed and the reliability. Wired cameras are more consistent and have clearer viewing.

No matter what you do, it's always better to have too much of a system than too little. You never want to regret not having a better camera or more cameras. If you think there is a possibility that your system may not meet your needs, consider the cost-benefit between the two systems. Catching criminals in the act AND being able to identify them are the two biggest benefits of a surveillance camera system. If your system can't do both of those things, it's worthless and needs updated.
