Always Know What You're Shooting At
Choosing Your Best Shot
1. Get on the same level as your subject - For children, pets, and some wildlife for example, get down to their level with your camera. You will capture an interesting perspective from their level.
2. Use a plain background - Such as taking portraits or closeups of flowers, butterflies, etc., using a plain background with a contrasting color can really make the subject "pop" on the finished print.
3. Know what your light source is and its direction - Always be aware of where the light is coming from. Directly in front you, which is also behind your subject, can put your subject in shadow and too much light enters your lens leaving your subject in darkness.
4. Rule of 3rds - Imagine a tic-tac-toe grid on your viewing window, (some digital cameras have them built in) try to avoid framing your shot with a horizon or vertical object directly in the middle. Move your frame out to the side allows the eyes to move into the picture.
5. Use your flash - You can use your flash outside when the background is brighter than the subject in front of you. This will allow your subject to be visible and not cast in shadow.
Determining your subject and where you can take the best shot, while making some subtle adjustments to your camera's settings that you can learn here from Digital Photography Secrets, can give your photos that professional quality touch.
Taking Action Photos with a Digital Camera
A Few Tips to Take Great Action Shots
Here are some tips to taking action photos:
1. Set your camera to the "action or sports" setting - Digital cameras have pre-set settings for each of their shooting modes. The action setting can improve your chances of getting a really good shot.
2. Set you camera for "continuous shooting" - This feature allows you to shoot multiple frames in quick succession before writing the image to the memory disk or card. This will prevent the "lag" that is common in digital cameras that occurs between shots.
3. Lead your camera in front of the subject - Follow your subject's line of travel, but lead the camera lens in front. Anticipate where the subject will be.
4. Shoot before the subject enters your viewing window - Digital cameras have a delay in their shutter. By shooting ahead of your subject, the shutter will have time to react. This may take a bit of practice to get the timing right because each camera can be different.
