Tips for Golfers

A good player is easy to spot on the first tee. He or she usually has an athletic stance with good posture. The knees are slightly flexed with the leaning forward coming from the hips not the waist. The back is relatively straight not crouched. If you gently tried to push the player over from the front or back, the golfer would not fall over. The player has good balance.

A light grip on the golf club is important to make your swing fast and free flowing. Any tension in the grip will cause this action to slow down. Whether the grip is interlocking, overlapping or five finger, one hand should not dominate the other. The hands should arrive back at the ball in the same position as they started so the clubface is square on impact..

Develop a great short game. The key to lowering your score is to chip and putt well. Most of your shots will occur within 100 yards of the hole. Practice your short game to know how far you hit your wedges with a quarter, half or full swing.

Manage the Golf Course

No one has the perfect swing, so play to your strengths and think your way around the golf course. If you hook or slice the ball, you can use it to your advantage. Before you hit the ball, know where you want to position it on the fairway to avoid the trouble and give yourself an easy next shot. Know how far you hit your clubs so you can choose the right club for the distance you want to go. It is not always wise to hit your longest club if there is not a good landing area. You may want to lay up by hitting a club to a wide part of the fairway and then hit your favourite wedge onto the green.

When you are in trouble sometimes it is better to just chip out onto the fairway or advance the ball to where you have a clear shot, This is much easier than trying a miracle shot over trees and through a narrow opening. Know your options. It is quite often better to call your ball unplayable and take a penalty than to try and hit from an impossible situation.

Do your practising on the driving range and chipping and putting greens so that you are not over thinking on the golf course. You want your swing to just happen. You should just play with the swing your bring to the course that day. It is too hard to try and fix your swing while you are trying to score on the golf course.

Remember to play the game of golf one shot at a time.
