Looking to Sell Your Music Online?
10 Tips
- Have A Quality Product - This is the first and most important step. If you don't have music ready that you believe in 100%, then download this pdf and come back to it when you're ready. Make sure your songs are properly mixed and encoded as high quality mp3 files. You can also use 20-30 second snippets for a lot of download sites so make sure you have some snippet mp3 files too. If you need help with encoding, mixing or mastering visit this link
- Write Great Ads - Another very important step since presentation is the key and a first impression is everything. Just because someone visits your page, it doesn't mean they will listen to the music, you have to sell them with your words. Mention the song topic, the tempo and the style of music (if you are selling beats, its good to mention the bpm too). You can also compare your sound to another artist in the ad but know that it will only work if you are as good as or better than that artist. Every download site will let you upload your album cover and some also let you upload artist/band pictures so make sure you have an eye catching album cover for your downloads and at least one artist/band picture.
- Sign up for a Paypal Account - Paypal is the leading way to transfer money online and most download sites will only pay you by Paypal. This is an online banking system and you can transfer your Paypal money into a checking account, by check, or by getting a Paypal debit card (my personal favorite).
- Sell Downloads With No Money Down on this Site - Tradebit allows you to sell your music downloads easily and with no money down. They do this by making a commission on each sale you make (25%) so its in their best interests to sell and promote your downloads. By joining Tradebit you will be featured in their mega store website and they also give you your own mini-site to design! They also give you code to put your sales ads on your own webpages to get even more sales along with eBay integration & Google Checkout Buttons. Commission is automatically deducted from your sales and they pay you on-time every week thru Paypal.
- Offer Your Music For Free & Still Get Paid - Through a unique online company called TrialPay, you can offer your music to your customers for free just by trying an offer from one of your TrialPay sponsors. With top sponsors and great offers this site is a money maker for people with hot music. I was skeptical at first, thinking this site was going to be like the free ipod website type scam sites, but this site is the real deal! I started getting a decent number of sales 3 weeks after signing up and have never had a customer complaint or problem. They pay you once a month through Paypal with zero fees!!!
- Sell Cds for Free Here - Sign up for an account with Lulu, and have your Cds pressed, printed and shipped on-demand. This way you pay no upfront money you just create your cd in the lulu shop, make it available to the public and collect your monthly payment. You set the price you want to get off each sale and that along with the manufacturing cost and lulu fees makes up your customer's final price. Lulu gives your cds a place in their high traffic marketplace and you also get a mini site you can promote and make money from.
- Open An Ebay Store - This is recommended mostly for producers and sound designers or artists with a larger fan base. You do have to pay for every auction you put up, so you can easily get into debt on eBay if you are putting up auctions and not getting sales. Opening an eBay store will lower your fees dramatically as you can put up auctions for only a few cents on your eBay store but you do have to pay monthly membership fees also :( . Make sure your ads are as descriptive as possible so you can be found easily in the search engines.
- Social Networking - Set up FULL profile pages that you ACTIVELY log in to a few times a week. Make sure you put some samples of your best material up and that a link to your sales site. Join groups in your music genre and participate in the conversations while dropping a link in your signature.
- Forum Posts - Participate in forums on websites that are in your music genre. *Notice I said participate and not blatantly post your web link.* The best way to get traffic from these sites is to put your web address in your signature, and actively participate in topics that relate to your music. This way everyone who sees your comment and link will already be fans of your style of music and more inclined to purchase from you.
- Video Posting - This is highly effective if done right, some of my videos are still making me great money over a year after I put them up. First of all you must have or have access to a digital video camera and a good video editing program. I recommend Camtasia Studio if you have the funds its easy to use and creates great videos. Your videos have to be eye catching, ear catching and of course have your web address in the video so people can check out your site and hopefully buy. Camtasia has a watermark option which you can use to embed your website link and/or logo into every frame of the videos. *Tip - some forums and social sites will let you post videos on your page or your signature*
