Signs of Heatstroke
Signs of heatstroke are panting hard, staggering gait, rapid heartbeat, listlessness, restlessness, dark red or purple gums and tongue, and vomiting.
If your dog does overheat, lower his body temperature gradually by immersing him in cool (Not cold) water or moving him into an air conditioned location. Give him small amounts of cold drinking water or ice cubes. Take him to a veterinarian as soon as possible.
Cool Your Dog Off With Ice
Try freezing a plastic soda bottle or gallon jug filled with water and placing it where your dog sleeps under a towel.
To help keep your dog's water cool, add ice cubes to it.
Place some old pillowcases in a plastic bag and freeze them. Give them to your dog to lay on.
Cool Your Dog Off With Cool Bandannas, Vests, And Collars
Homemade Frozen Dog Treats
Freeze bananas, carrots, chunks of cheese, or hot dogs.
Make ice cubes with a chunk of banana, cheese, or other treat inside.
Freeze chicken or beef broth.
Fill a Kong toy with dog food and peanut butter and freeze it.

If your dog has a dog house make sure it is well ventilated and in the shade all day. Or use an open wire dog crate with a cover

Use Fans On Carriers, Crates And Pens.
Never leave a dog in a parked car.
A car's inside temperature can increase as much as 40 degrees in an hour. On an 85 degree day, the temperature inside a car can rise to 102 in ten minutes. Temperatures in air conditioned cars can reach the same temperature as outside within just five minutes of being turned off.

Keep Water Available
Keep 2 full bowls of water available for your pet at all times. If one bowl is knocked over or emptied, fresh water will still be available.

Outdoor Waterers
Signs of Dehydration
Watch for signs of dehydration: drooling excessively, acting lethargic, and bloodshot eyes. If you lift the skin, it will take longer than usual for the skin to fall back into place.

Take your dog swimming at a lake or creek.

Consider getting a child's hard plastic wading pool for your dog to cool off in.

Play with your dog with the garden hose, or turn on the yard sprinkler for him to play in.
Avoid Hot Sidewalks And Streets
If you must walk your dog when the sidewalks are hot consider using dog booties.
