The important thing to is find a knowledgeable person at your local ski and snowboarding store to help you pick out the right snowboard. Once you get your board you'll have to decide what kind of bindings to get and make sure you are fitted for your boots properly.

The snowboard should be purchased with your skill level in mind and maybe how well you expect to improve. You could get a used board to start with then once you get good enough you can then buy an expert level board. These boards are usually pretty tough for the beginner to control, but when you get good enough you'll want the extra speed and maneuverability they can give you.

The bindings and boots come next. The cheap and mostly beginner bindings are latched onto your boots. There are special step in bindings that you will eventually want. You may not want to spend the money on them at first but eventually you will be good enough to where the convenience will dictate that you buy them.

Your boots need to be comfortable and snug. These are typically items that you would need to initially go into a store to purchase. Every boot fits differently. You don't want it to loose or too snug. And you also want to make sure it supports your foot properly as well. A knowledgeable salesdude will be able to fit you right.
