Titanic - An Unforgettable Movie

Titanic was THE movie to see when it hit theaters in 1997. People went once, twice, three times or more to see this film, yet it is difficult to find someone who will admit that they actually enjoy this movie. Ok, we can all agree that some of the script was a bit cheesy. I did not see it in theaters, but I will admit (and im not ashamed) it is my favorite film of all time.

Why? For many reasons.

Why I Love Titanic

1. I love anything that has to do with the Titanic.
2. The music is beautiful and fits with the film.
3. The cinematography is gorgeous.
4. The characters were well chosen.
5. It is based on a true story, and is surprisingly pretty close to the real story.
6. It makes my emotions run wild. With this movie I feel happy, sad, in love, and scared.
7. Kate Winslet is stunning.
8. It truly makes me sympathize with what these people had to go through on the Titanic. James Cameron, in my opinion, made a beautiful tribute for the passengers and crew on the Titanic and will help it to never be forgotten.

Let's take a look back at a fantastic movie. A movie that won 11 academy awards, and rightfully so. Titanic is the kind of movie that will live on forever. Whether you like it or not, Titanic will not be forgotten and will be a legendary blockbuster even as the years pass by.

Plot

Deep-sea explorer Brock Lovett is trying to find a diamond necklace that went down with the ship Titanic. He reaches the ship and finds nothing but a picture of a young woman wearing the diamond necklace. A Titanic survivor sees the picture on the news and calls to say the woman in the picture is her. She goes to visit Brock Lovett and to tells her story of what it was like on the "unsinkable ship", Titanic.

Titanic is a fictional love story based on the famous sinking of the Titanic. I like to think of it as Jack and Rose represent the passengers as a whole so the viewer feels closer to the passengers and what they would feel. It is a historical movie with fictional characters weaved throughout.

Quotes

Fabrizio: "I can see the Statue of Liberty already!... Very small, of course."

Jack: "Rose, you're no picnic, all right? You're a spoiled little brat, even, but under that, you're the most amazingly, astounding, wonderful girl, woman that I've ever known... "

Old Rose: "Fifteen-hundred people went into the sea, when Titanic sank from under us. There were twenty boats floating nearby... and only one came back. One. Six were saved from the water, myself included. Six... out of fifteen-hundred. Afterward, the seven-hundred people in the boats had nothing to do but wait... wait to die... wait to live... wait for an absolution... that would never come. "

Cal Hockley: "God himself could not sink this ship. "

Thomas Andrews: "Sleep soundly young Rose for I have built you a good ship, strong and true, she has all the lifeboats you need. "

Captian Smith: "Take her to sea, Mr. Murdoch. Let's stretch her legs. "

Rose: "Jack! This is where we first met. "

Old Rose "Titanic was called the ship of dreams, and it was, it really was."

Titanic V. History

Although the love story on Titanic was based on fictional characters, the actual Titanic did in fact sink, and James Cameron did his homework. Here I will show some of what actually happened and what did not happen.

- Jack and Rose are fictional characters. Although there was a J. Dawson on board the Titanic, it was not Jack. His name was Joseph Dawson and was a member of the crew. James Cameron said he was not aware there was a J. Dawson on board, and it was coincidence that he picked Jack Dawson as the lead name.

- Much of the underwater shots are real, although some shots had to be faked. The director, James Cameron, made a dozen deep sea dives to the ship for filming.

- Pieces of the iceberg really did fall on the deck, and people played with them and thought everything was fine. At first, they all thought it was fun and games. Nothing bad could happen to the mighty Titanic!

- The lifeboats really were not loaded with as many people as they could have been just like in the movie. Passengers were more afraid to get into the lifeboats because the Titanic sinking seemed impossible and the Titanic seemed safer than the little lifeboats.

- The band really did play music as Titanic was sinking. Nobody is 100% positive what song was the last song played, but most people believe it was "Nearer, My God, To Thee" which was the song played in the film. The band leader had said if he was ever on a sinking ship he would play "Nearer, My God, To Thee" and survivors said that was what they heard. Other survivors said they heard the song "Song d'Automne".

- Ida and Isidor Straus (the old couple laying in bed) really died with the Titanic. She really did stay with her husband on the ship, but they did not lay in their bed like in the movie. Researchers believe they were on the deck of the ship because Isidors body was found and could not have been found if they were on the inside. Survivors also remember seeing them outside.

- In the movie 1st Officer Murdoch shoots himself. Nobody can prove if this happened or not. Some survivors claimed someone in the crew committed suicide, but nobody knows who. It is only rumor that Murdoch was the one who did it. Murdoch's family was upset that he was depicted in the movie as the one who committed suicide and accepted a bribe, so James Cameron apologized and donated money to Murdoch's memorial fund.

On the 3 disk collectors edition of Titanic, there are several deleted scenes. Some of these scenes are very historically correct, but were deleted because they didn't add to the overall effect of the movie. If you are a history buff or want to see more Titanic scenes then I highly recommend the collectors edition. The scenes are still good and interesting and since I love Titanic so much, I wouldn't have minded them being in...but of course it would have been about 4 hours instead of 3 hours!

Who did the characters portray?

Although some of the characters in the movie are fictional, many of them are based on actual people.

These are some of the people that were in the movie and were real people on the Titanic. Real people on the left and actors on the right.

Titanic Movie Facts

Some things you might find interesting!

- James Cameron went on the dives to the real Titanic himself to shoot scenes for the movie. It took 12 dives to get the footage they needed because the deep-sea camera only held 12 minutes worth of film, even though each dive took hours.

- Titanic made 1.8 billion dollars at the box office. No movie has beaten that record to date.

- In the scene where the water comes crashing into the Grand Staircase room, the film makers had only one shot at filming it because the set and furnishings were going to be destroyed in the first shot because of the water crashing through.

- One of three films to win a total of 11 Academy Awards

- Christian Bale auditioned for the role of Jack Dawson.

- The hands seen sketching Rose are not Leonardo DiCaprio's, but directors.

- Was #1 at the U.S. box office for a record fifteen consecutive weeks

- Kate Winslet developed pneumonia while filming the water scenes.

- It cost $200 million to make the movie, which was actually more expensive than it cost to make the actual Titanic.

Very nicely done & blessed by a SquidAngel. I am also lensrolling your lens to my Titanic Memorial Cruise page.

We recently tried to watch the Titanic on television ~~ with commercials ~~ and that was a disaster. The Titanic is a longish movie (I think) and the commercials made it a bit long! I do enjoy reading and watching about the Titanic, too. I think my interest started with a book we had to read in high school.

What a great overview of this film! I love the part about what did really happen and what didn't, as well as the photos of the actors and the real people they portrayed. I actually resisted seeing this film for a while--I wasn't a big Leonardo DiCaprio fan at the time--but I was very pleasantly surprised when I finally did see it. And I became much more of a Leo fan from then on.
