Titanic Tales - the Titanic and the Iceberg.

The Titanic sank on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York via Cobh in Ireland on 15 April 1912 with the loss of 1,522 lives. She never made it. The White Star Line were the owners of The Titanic.
In the middle of the night The Titanic struck an iceberg and eventually sank.
The RMS Titanic had been advertised as unsinkable and accordingly had insufficient lifeboats aboard.
A conspiracy theory alledges that it was not in fact the Titanic that sank but it's sister ship RMS Olympic which had many teething problems. A number of very influential people unexpectedly cancelled their reservations at the last moment.

A series of photographs of the Titanic was taken by Father Browne who left the ship at Cobh before the fateful voyage. A link to a book of these is given below.

Many of the people on board were Irish emigrants who were due to sail on another ship that was cancelled.
They boarded the Titanic at Queenstown (Cobh near Cork) and many of them perished.

There is an excellent museum of the Titanic on the waterfront in Cobh.

The White Star Line was known as a generous employer.
Ir came as a bit of a shock for the surviving seamen to discover that they were no longer employed.
Apparently the company held that by leaving the ship they had dismissed themselves.
No ccomensation was paid to the crew after the disaster.

The Titanic Disaster

The 'RMS Titanic''' was an Olympic-class passenger liner owned by British shipping company White Star Line and built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland. At the time of her construction, she was the largest passenger steamship in the world.

Shortly before midnight on 14 April 1912, four days into the ships maiden voyage, Titanic hit an iceberg and sank two hours and forty-eight minutes later, early on 15 April 1912. The sinking resulted in the deaths of 1,517 of the 2,223 people on board, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. The high casualty rate was due in part to the fact that, although complying with the regulations of the time, the ship did not carry enough lifeboats for everyone aboard. The ship had a total lifeboat capacity of 1,178 people, although her maximum capacity was 3,547. A disproportionate number of men died due to the women-and-children-first protocol that was followed.

The frenzy on the part of the media about Titanic famous victims, the legends about the sinking, the resulting changes to maritime law, and the discovery of the wreck have contributed to the continuing interest in, and notoriety of, the Titanic.
