Tithing Brings Blessing

Tithing in Modern Day

Tithing is just one of those unspoken subjects amount people at church. Everyone has some sort of perspective on it but they don't really discuss it out of fear of offending someone. But I think as a family, we need to be open about all areas and I think that's what Jesus would want us to do. After all, your church family, is your heavenly family for eternity. It would almost be hypocritical not to talk about the things you struggle with I think.

What is tithing? Tithing is 10% of one's gross income given back to God. Tithing helps fund missionaries, pay the bills and keep programs going in your community. But more importantly, you tithing is your way of saying, "Yes Lord, you are first in my life." So what do you think about tithing and offerings? This lens explains my view point. I am not here to judge, criticize or in anyway take away from your relationship with God. I think that's just what it is, a relationship and no one could ever judge something so personal. This is merely what I feel about tithing and offerings.

What is a tithe?

How much is a tithe?

Tithes-and-offeringsSo what exactly is a tithe? To myself, a Christian, a tithe is a one-tenth part of your earnings or harvest given back to the church. The Bible tells us, tithing is one of the greatest acts of obedience a Christian can practice.

There are principles behind tithing that have nothing to do with the money itself. Tithing teaches us obedience. When God asks us for something, we should be willing to give it freely and gladly.

Tithing is not just any tenth; it is the first tenth of one's income-salary, dividends, interest-income from any source. By giving the first tenth you are putting God first above all other things and trusting God to take care of the rest. Tithing is giving back to God something God gave in the first place. Everything we have is His any Christian knows that.

In Luke 14:33 the Bible says, In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

Falling in Love with God

I Tithe Out of Love and Respect for the Love of My Life

Falling in love is the greatest of all the feelings. You want to spend all your waking hours together, you daydream about them constantly, you want to give them everything good you possibly can. Love makes us do things that other people just don't understand sometimes.

I can't prove that love exists by any physical or tangible object but its something I just feel. I can't physically put Jesus Christ in front of you, but I know He exists because It's something I feel. The more you walk with the Lord, the more you fall in love with the Lord and the more you want to do good things for the Lord. Same as you would any other intimate relationship you want to nurture. I want to spend all my waking hours with Him, I meditate on His word and think about Him constantly....and I want to give Him the best of everything I have, not the rest of what I have. That's where Tithing comes in for me. I love the Lord with all my heart, soul and mind and when you experience that Love, "giving up" for that Love just feels right.

What does the Bible say about Tithing?

Tithing and the Bible

In Malachi 3:10 it says,

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

How powerful is that verse? Can you imagine the floodgates of heaven being poured out on you? It's an incredible picture.

This is also the only verse in the Bible where Gods says, "test Me in this!"

God is telling you to test Him with your tithe. Give Him His share and He will pour out more blessing than you have room for.

With the economic climate being so unstable it's harder and harder for Christians to understand this verse out of fear that they will not be able to pay for the the things they need. God knows the things you need. So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. (Matthew 6:31-32) By giving your tithe you are saying that you put God first, and you trust in Him to take care of the rest. "Test Him in this!" He's telling you to test Him. "Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty

Hebrews 11:6, And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Faith & Trust in the Lord

Tithing is showing faith

I write this lens not as a church or a Christian organization trying to raise money. I'm just a fellow Christian who truly believes in the blessings that tithing brings.

I'm not judging your relationship with God, I'm not picking on you if your don't give a tithe. I realize this is a touchy area for some and by no means do I want to push you into anything or away from anything. God will guide you, I just want to share my beliefs about tithing with you. God loves you no matter what and in no way am I trying to take away from that.

We know that the Bible promises that "those who seek the LORD shall not lack in any good thing" (Psalm 34:10). By giving up everything, including finances we are trusting the Lord to provide our needs.

God specifically asks for our faith and trust. When we are willingly surrender a tenth of our income, especially when we believe we can't afford to, we're telling God, "I believe You will take care of me and provide for me." God wants for us to be able to look beyond our circumstances and rely on Him for our needs.

Money is one of the hardest things for any man to part with. We can only demonstrate our faith with our actions. It is faithful behavior that evidences Christ within us. Before you close your heart to the word "tithing" I encourage you to pray and listen to what God is telling you. Drown out the voice of worry, despair and financial tribulation and really listen to what God is telling you. If you truly believe that the Lord is not asking for your obedience in this area then no one can judge you. Don't let the decision to tithe come from pressure but let it come from prayer.

Luke 12:29-31

"And don't be concerned about what to eat and what to drink. Don't worry about such things. These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers all over the world, but your Father already knows your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need.

It's about Obedience, not money

Tithing & Offerings

God doesn't want us to give so much for His sake as for our own. He wants us to be obedient and give Him opportunities to bless us. He wants us to trust Him to meet our needs. He wants us to be disciplined and mature so that we are more useful in His service. He wants us to take responsibility for our Christian family and support our churches. He could do all these things on His own without our money but what would we learn? It's an act of Love on God's part by asking us for things that hard to give up, it makes us stronger.

Matthew 6:21

Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

The Miracle of Tithing

Tithing & Offering

Without research and prayer you're never going to get the answers you seek. Everyone has their own personal relationship with the Lord and only you can decide whether tithing is right for you. The Old Testament still applies

It's the Bible Jesus Read

Three Reasons the Old Testament Still Applies:

1. It provides a foundation for the New Testament

2. Jesus constantly refers to the Old Testament in His teachings

3. All the fundamental teachings come from the Old Testament

Jesus is constantly refering to the Old Testament teachings, and if Jesus thinks the Old Testament is important......well so do I.
