An Introduction To TMJ

The Temporomandibular joint is a very important joint in our body. It is involved in everything that requires mouth and jaw movements. Without it you can't talk nor chew your food. Without it you can't yawn or sing. It includes not just a set of bones, but a whole network of muscles and tendons. It affects the whole facial, head, neck and shoulder areas.

TMJ Disorder Symptoms

The disorder associated with temporomandibular joint is simply called TMJ disorder. The most common complain that sufferers of this disorder have are pain, clicking of the jaws and swelling or tenderness of the affected area. These are the most common symptoms of the disorder. The other symptoms are the partial or full locking of the jaw, temporary hearing loss, migraine, ringing in the ear and difficulty eating.

Factors That Cause TMJ Disorder

TMJ is a disorder that is still puzzling because it is caused by many factors and some of which are trauma ( accidents, fall, punches), grinding and clenching of teeth particularly when asleep, bad bite which is the disharmony and misalignment of the teeth, and emotions that are very strong that causes stress, tension and pressure on the joint.

TMJ Disorder Treatment Options

There is no single cause or treatment for TMJ. If you research on the net about TMJ what you will see is a set of treatments for the different symptoms of it. For pain associated with the disorder, pain killers are prescribed. For the swelling of the area or near the area what is prescribed are the anti - inflammatory or cold or hot packs. For the misalignment of the jaws or teeth the TMJ dentist is usually called for.

What TMJ Dentists Recommend

What the TMJ dentist would usually recommend to treat TMJ is the use of splints (biteplates, mouthguards). These splints are custom made to fit the the upper and lower teeth. These are used to lessen tension and stabilize the jaw. These are worn particularly at night because people grind and clench their teeth during sleep. These can only be worn in short periods. The relief from this is very temporary. There are other things that a dentist can do such as braces, restorations and shaving down of teeth but these are irreversible and cause permanent changes to the teeth or jaw, that needs a lot of thought. These also are not guaranteed full cure for the disorder.
