How can technlogy make me a better speaker?

Have you ever wondered how blogs, wikis and podcasting can help you be a better public speaker?  Toastmasters all over the world are trying to find out.  Blogs can be used as ways to share news, experience and knoweldge with people in the world and podcasts can be used to do the same and use your public speaking skills.  Wikis can become encyclopedias of knowledge on one subject.  Blog Carnivals and Squidoo can be used to organize various things going on electronically.  MySpace, Friendster, Facebook and LinkedIn can be used to connect you socially or professionally with people who are your interests.  All these tools are designed to increase your awareness and your connection to the world around you, just in a virtual setting.  They help you develop and share your expertise and improve your comfort with communication.

This lens shares some of the best ways Toastmasters are using the web to connect with their fellow members and share their knowledge of the organization, public speaking and various other topics.

Sara's Favorite Web 2.0 Technologies

This is a list of my favorite technologies in Web2.0- the web that connects you to other people on the web. You should look at these technologies and consider using them yourself.
  1. Google Reader allows you to read all your favorite blogs through their RSS feeds. This way you just check your Reader account and it lets you know which blog is updated.
  2. Blogger is where I host my blog and their newest version allows for so much more flexibility. I especially love that I can tag my entries to organize them.
  3. iTunes is my favorite way to subscribe and listen to podcasts related to Toastmasters. There are more and more Toastmaster podcasts all the time and iTunes will download them for me when they are added.
  4. Flickr to display my photos for my club, district and related events. I also like to see what pictures other Toastmasters take.
  5. The Toastmasters Wikia is where Erich (from South Africa) and a few of us are trying to create the ultimate Toastmasters Encyclopedia.
  6. Face to connect to my fellow Toastmasters. Facebook is popular with a number of different generations including Baby Boomers!
  7. Squidoo is the service I used to make this page, or as they call it, lense.
  8. del.icio.us is where I store all my bookmarks for my favorite Toastmaster pages.
  9. YouTube is where I go to see videos of speech by my fellow Toastmasters.
  10. Scribd where I post conference handouts and newsletters so people can read and download them.

Toastmasters Technology Links

Beyond A Webpage

Blogs, videos, news and webpages are not the only way to promote the organization, your club or yourself. Check out these links
The Toastmasters Google Group
When the web was born people connected with each other in Usenet groups. An early version of the current bulliten boards, they still exist today and Google makes it easy to access them through Google Groups. The Toastmasters group is still very active with many of the organizations virtual leaders engaged in conversations about Toastmasters.
Yahoo Groups Director for Toastmasters
The Yahoo Groups program allows you to do something very similar to Google, but groups are created and run by us. Many Districts use the mailing list feature of the groups to communicate with members and allow the members to communicate with each other. Find your district or club with this directory.
Toastmasters Wiki
Depsite the controversy always surrounding Wikipedia, the wiki tools are fantastic ways to collect knowledge in one virtual encyclopedia. The Toastmasters wiki hopes to collect our knowledge of the organization in one place. Everyone can participate and improve the increasingly popular encyclopedia.
Facebook
If you think Facebook is nothing but teenagers then you are missing a great resource to find fellow Toastmasters. You can collect friends from within the organization and join the groups related to the organization to engage in another conversation. More and more generations are joining in. In fact Baby Boomers are becoming one of the largest generations on Facebook.
43 Things
What are the top 43 things you want to do? List them here- especially the Toastmaster related goals. Then see how many other people are working on their DTM, AL-B and other speaking goals. You can encourage them and share your experience with others.

The results of your poll show what I think is wrong with Toastmasters. It has a fusty image and it's for old people. Sorry, but that's what comes across.

I grant you that a few more people believed in the technology than didn't but it's that major minority who don't understand how modern technology can enhance communication that actually form a barrier to younger people realising that Toastmasters could be of benefit to them.

Very good stuff. I'm a Toastmaster too. Recently I did a speech on a similar topic and really glad to read your post. I plan to create a lens from my speech. I hope it will complement your lens very well.

Excellent resources. Nice mix. Ideal for toastmasters or anyone who wants to learn about improving their communication skills. Technology doesn't replace face to face communication, it helps us improve it by giving us extra tools to use.

I love your lens. I am both an active member of Toastmasters and addicted to podcasting. The podcasts I listen to include a couple that are related to Toastmasters.
