As the fight to stop smoking in public increases in intensity, more and more prominent businesses disassociate themselves from anything to do with advertising smoking products or the use of tobacco. Because of this any merchandise that is tobacco related is becoming harder to find.

Tobacco advertising is the promotion of tobacco use (typically cigarette smoking) by the tobacco industry through a variety of media. The tobacco industry also commonly uses sponsorship, particularly of sporting events. It is one of the most highly-regulated forms of marketing, along with alcohol advertising. Some or all forms of tobacco advertising are banned in many countries.

Most tobacco collectables are still relatively inexpensive, so now is the ideal time to start your collection of smoking and tobacco related items. As time passes and they become more scarce, these items are bound to raise in price.

If you're interested in collecting tobacco related products, it would be wise to bookmark "Tobacco Collectables" because we will be keeping you updated on the latest trends and sources for you.

A Zippo lighter is a refillable, metal lighter manufactured by Zippo Manufacturing Company. Thousands of different styles and designs have been made in the seven decades since their introduction. They are frequently collected.

Ronson is best known as an American company that gained world wide fame for high quality Cigar/Cigarette Lighters. In England, Ronson also had a large factory making gas lighters in the town of Leatherhead, Surrey. The factory was between the east bank of the River Mole and Randalls Road.

Tobacco

Tobacco has been growing on the American Continent since about 6000 BC and began being used by native cultures at about 3000 BC. It has been smoked in one form or another since about 2000 BC. There are pictoral drawings of ancient Mayans smoking crude cigars from 1400 BC. Tobacco has a very long history of use in Native American culture and played an important part in the foundation of the United States of America, going back to colonial times and the original Jamestown settlement.

Commercially available dried, cured and natural forms, it is often smoked (see tobacco smoking) in the form of a cigar or cigarette, or in a stem pipe, water pipe, or hookah. Tobacco can also be chewed, "dipped" (placed between the cheek and gum), or sniffed into the nose as finely powdered snuff. Many countries set a minimum smoking age, regulating the purchase and use of tobacco products.

All methods of tobacco consumption results in varying quantities of nicotine being absorbed into the user's bloodstream. Over time, tolerance and dependence develop. Absorption quantity, frequency, and speed seem to have a direct relationship with how strong a dependence and tolerance, if any, might be created.

Pipes

Pipes are a favorite for collectors. Many are fairly inexpensive, but others are priced out of reach of the average collector.

Some well known pipes are Briar, Meerschaum, Clay, Calabash, Corncob and the Hookah.

Pipes have been used since ancient times. Herodotus described Scythians inhaling the fumes of burning leaves in 500 B.C.E. Romans, and Greeks adopted pipes from their neighbors to the east and they were subsequently used by Germanic, Celtic and Nordic tribes.

As tobacco was not introduced to the Old World until the 16th century, the pipes outside of the Americas were usually used to smoke hashish, a rare and expensive substance outside areas of the Middle East, Central Asia and India where it was produced.

Native Americans smoked tobacco in pipes long before the arrival of Europeans. Tobacco was introduced to Europe from the Americas in the 16th century and spread around the world rapidly.

Pocket Tins

War Eagles Cigar Tins

More Tins, Cigarette Packs, Etc.

When purchasing tobacco tins be aware that the value of tins with rust or dings are a lot less then those in exellent condition. Most "values" that you find in collector books are for tins in excellent condition.

Other tins are great for "fillers", but don't get excited over a rare find and pay excellent prices for rusty fillers.

Tobacco Bag

The pipe bag or tobacco bag was a ubiquitous item amongst the Native Americans of North America. Although styles and sizes varied widely between tribes and geographical locations, all usually had certain elements in common: A long neck of cloth or leather, a rim which was often beaded or quilled, a lower panel, or pouch, also beaded or quilled, and a fringe at the bottom. Although it is hard to make too many generalities, many of the later examples had a quilled 'slat panel' between the pouch and the fringe, while many of the earlier ones did not. Quillwork was also much more prevalent before the late 18th and early 19th century, when beadwork- made with beads obtained from Europeans- really became the norm. Contrary to the popular image of the peace pipe, pipe bags were often used to carry a pipe into battle, or by a tribal elder to hold tobacco in ceremonial situations. Scant evidence remains, in the form of oral histories recorded or transcribed during the last hundred and fifty years, of the various societies that might have conducted such ceremonies.

Ashtrays

The most common ashtray design is a shallow cylinder with a flat base, to rest on a table. Many ashtrays have notches at the rim, to hold cigarettes and/or a cigar. In Spain, some ashtrays consist of two interlocking parts, the bottom of which is filled with water. Ashtrays are also built into cars, and provided in toilets and other public places.

Ashtrays have been a popular advertising vehicle. Collectors look for ashtrays with clever and unusual ads, colors, shapes and sizes. Some ashtrays of the late 1940s to early 1970s were freeform vehicles for Googie styling. During the 1950s and 1960s, small personal ashtrays were part of a table setting, commonly placed on the top right-hand side, behind the wine and water glasses.
