Tobias Turkey: A Thanksgiving Tale

Tobias Turkey is a determined little turkey who wants to win the prize for being the biggest turkey on Farmer Joe's Farm.

This Thanksgiving Tale by Sandra Robbins can lead to a unit study of domestic turkeys with poems, crafts, math activities and a book to download onto your iPhone,iPod or other Mp3 device.

Why wait for Thanksgiving, any time is the time to gobble up a great story...

Each year I like to take the children to a turkey farm. The experience of visiting a turkey farm allows the children not only to observe the turkeys but also to hear the various sounds that they make and smell the odors. If you ask, most farms will arrange for the children to touch a turkey and often have turkey feathers laying around that the children may take home. After such an exciting field trip the children are eager to learn more about domestic turkeys which leads us right into the Tale of Tobias Turkey

Be sure to take plenty of pictures. Children love to use the pictures to illustrate stories. They can be used to create games, puzzles and laminated they can be used for counting in math centers.

Tobias Turkey was illustrated by Sandra Robbins' 12 year old son, Michael. It tells the story of a very determined little turkey and his quest to win the Fattest Turkey Contest.

While all the other turkeys are out sliding, swimming and jumping over fences Tobias Turkey persists in the pursuit of his goal. He doesn't give in to peer pressure.

Just as Tobias is determined to attain his goal, we as parents must also find ways to get things done and that's where Mobistories can help. Tobias Turkey comes in a paperback edition with a cassette tape but it also comes in a new format which makes it possible to keep your child happily reading no matter where you are. Tobias Turkey is one of the MobiStories.

Now when you are in line at the bank or trying to talk with a doctor, your child can have a story read to him or her.

MobiStories can be downloaded onto your iPhone, iPod, or other digital Mp3 device so that your child can have a story read to him or her anytime and anywhere.

It's Thanksgiving

by Jack Prelutsky

It's ThanksgivingTobias Turkey

The poems in this little book are not only hilarious and catch children's attention, they also are written in large, easy to read print, are easily memorized and are a great accompaniment to Tobias Turkey.

Jack Prelutsky makes up some of the funniest poems I have ever heard. When we were homeschooling in Boston, we went to one of his book signings where he recited one of his turkey poems and had everyone in tears. Some of the poems in It's Thanksgiving might offend Tobias Turkey but at least one has sympathy for the plight of the turkey on Thanksgiving Day.

Illumination in the Flatwoods: A Season with the Wild Turkey

Domesticated Turkeys are raised on farms. They differ in many ways from their wild cousins.

Fully grown wild male turkeys weigh 8-24 pounds while wild female turkeys weigh 7-16 pounds.

Fully grown domestic turkeys have been know to weigh as much as 86 pounds.

To make these numbers come alive for children, get out your cans of beans and stack up 16 cans for a very large wild turkey and 86 cans for a domestic turkey.

These number will not mean much to children until they experience them.

Take out some bathroom scales and try to find something that weighs each of the mentioned amounts. Beans can be poured out into tote bags until they weigh the same as the turkey.

Male domestic turkeys have been known to get as heavy as 86 pounds (40 kg.).

Take out the crayons and color some turkeys and other poultry. When you color with your child you might talk about the sounds that turkeys make: Gobble, gobble.

Notice that:
1. Gobble and Turkey start with different sounds. Can you think of other turkey words?
2. Both of those words have two syllables but that beak and peck only have one.

When you read Tobias Turkey again, see if you can find some of these words.

Farmer Joe had hundreds of turkeys on his farm. They ran all over the place and it was difficult to count how many turkeys he had. One day Farmer Joe decided to use place value to help him count his turkeys.

He made lots of pens and put 10 turkeys in each pen. Each group of 10 pens were put in a separate field. Then he could count the turkeys by hundreds, tens and ones.

Materials: Green bathmats, Popsicle sticks, Unifix cubes.

Beg, plead and look embarassed.

funcook says:

It's certainly a challenge I've faced. When my kids were babies, sometimes I'd put them in the car for a ride or the stroller for a walk. Just a change of scenery helps, even taking them outside of the restaurant or whatever. Sometimes I've just bribed them with a toy or a book if I'm in line, but that only lasts a few seconds, and I end up buying the new toy or book!

eccles1 says:

get them off sugar as much as possible because a sugar rush is a big problem for most kids

newbizmau says:

I have found that children like to be included in everything. So just allowing them to be included in decisions (or allowing them to have a choice or two) along with teaching them and including them in whatever you are doing can make them feel important, and in some cases gives them a reason to act more maturely and appropriately.

Pastiche says:

I hug and whisper to a screaming child. For a wriggly wee one, I try to distract and engage, and a book or story are almost always successful. I like these Mobi stories - must get some for the grandkids.

livingfrontiers says:

The best way is to try to engage your little one by asking for a story they know by heart!

Have a MobiStory ready for them to read..

juliavm says:

I have a niece and nephew who are hyperactive. The only way to calm them is by giving them books, or playing music and dancing with them (if you consider that as calming). My 1 year old niece loves books. They taste really good. :)

YayasHome says:

I love to cuddle a child an' sing softly to him/her. This generally results in the child or both of us being put to bed.

darciefrench says:

Yes, my child is the type who always needs direction, stimulation, and activity. All the hard work teaching her to read in the early years if paying off- as at 7 she's now able to relax with a book.

coffeebreak9am says:

Reading Aloud

The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.

There is conclusive evidence to support the use of reading aloud not only in the home but also in the classroom: It is a practice that should continue throughout the grades.

Turkeys

When Europeans first encountered turkeys in the Americas they incorrectly identified the birds as a type of guineafowl (Numida meleagris), also known as a turkey-cock from its importation to Central Europe through Turkey, and the name of that country stuck as the name of the bird. The confusion is also reflected in the scientific name: meleagris is Greek for guinea-fowl.
