Each year I like to take the children to a turkey farm. The experience of visiting a turkey farm allows the children not only to observe the turkeys but also to hear the various sounds that they make and smell the odors. If you ask, most farms will arrange for the children to touch a turkey and often have turkey feathers laying around that the children may take home. After such an exciting field trip the children are eager to learn more about domestic turkeys which leads us right into the Tale of Tobias Turkey
Be sure to take plenty of pictures. Children love to use the pictures to illustrate stories. They can be used to create games, puzzles and laminated they can be used for counting in math centers.

Tobias Turkey was illustrated by Sandra Robbins' 12 year old son, Michael. It tells the story of a very determined little turkey and his quest to win the Fattest Turkey Contest.
While all the other turkeys are out sliding, swimming and jumping over fences Tobias Turkey persists in the pursuit of his goal. He doesn't give in to peer pressure.
Just as Tobias is determined to attain his goal, we as parents must also find ways to get things done and that's where Mobistories can help. Tobias Turkey comes in a paperback edition with a cassette tape but it also comes in a new format which makes it possible to keep your child happily reading no matter where you are. Tobias Turkey is one of the MobiStories.
Now when you are in line at the bank or trying to talk with a doctor, your child can have a story read to him or her.

It's Thanksgiving
by Jack Prelutsky

The poems in this little book are not only hilarious and catch children's attention, they also are written in large, easy to read print, are easily memorized and are a great accompaniment to Tobias Turkey.
Jack Prelutsky makes up some of the funniest poems I have ever heard. When we were homeschooling in Boston, we went to one of his book signings where he recited one of his turkey poems and had everyone in tears. Some of the poems in It's Thanksgiving might offend Tobias Turkey but at least one has sympathy for the plight of the turkey on Thanksgiving Day.

Tobias Turkey Lives on a Farm
Tobias Turkey is a Domesticated Turkey

Tobias Turkey is a domestic turkey. He is raised on Joe's Farm with other poultry like chickens and ducks.
Domesticated Turkeys are raised on farms. They differ in many ways from their wild cousins.
Fully grown wild male turkeys weigh 8-24 pounds while wild female turkeys weigh 7-16 pounds.
Fully grown domestic turkeys have been know to weigh as much as 86 pounds.
To make these numbers come alive for children, get out your cans of beans and stack up 16 cans for a very large wild turkey and 86 cans for a domestic turkey.

These number will not mean much to children until they experience them.
Take out some bathroom scales and try to find something that weighs each of the mentioned amounts. Beans can be poured out into tote bags until they weigh the same as the turkey.
Male domestic turkeys have been known to get as heavy as 86 pounds (40 kg.).
Do you know anyone who weighs 86 pounds? Go to the grocery store and check the weighs of the turkeys for sale there. How much do they weigh?

Farmer Joe had hundreds of turkeys on his farm. They ran all over the place and it was difficult to count how many turkeys he had. One day Farmer Joe decided to use place value to help him count his turkeys.
He made lots of pens and put 10 turkeys in each pen. Each group of 10 pens were put in a separate field. Then he could count the turkeys by hundreds, tens and ones.
Materials: Green bathmats, Popsicle sticks, Unifix cubes.

Have you ever gone out to a restaurant with a restless child?
Have you ever stood in line at the bank when your child wants all of your attention?
Have you ever tried to keep your child amused for just those last few minutes in line at the grocery store when you are trying to pay and they have had it?
What do you do to calm a restless child?

It's certainly a challenge I've faced. When my kids were babies, sometimes I'd put them in the car for a ride or the stroller for a walk. Just a change of scenery helps, even taking them outside of the restaurant or whatever. Sometimes I've just bribed them with a toy or a book if I'm in line, but that only lasts a few seconds, and I end up buying the new toy or book!

I have found that children like to be included in everything. So just allowing them to be included in decisions (or allowing them to have a choice or two) along with teaching them and including them in whatever you are doing can make them feel important, and in some cases gives them a reason to act more maturely and appropriately.

Play a Turkey Game

1. Wash an empty plastic milk jug and cut off the top section where the lid attaches. (An adult can do this with a craft knife.)
2. Paint the jug, adding wings and a red gobbler. Glue a pom pom to the top of the handle for the head and add giggle eyes and a construction paper or craft foam beak.
3. Cut tail feathers from construction paper or craft foam pieces and glue them to the back. To play a game, stand above the turkey and drop pencils or clothespins and see how many you can get inside the turkey jug.
4. Hold the pencil or clothespin in your hand and place your hand at the level of your nose while standing over the jug. Drop the item from "nose level". This makes the game fair for all ages.

Turkeys
When Europeans first encountered turkeys in the Americas they incorrectly identified the birds as a type of guineafowl (Numida meleagris), also known as a turkey-cock from its importation to Central Europe through Turkey, and the name of that country stuck as the name of the bird. The confusion is also reflected in the scientific name: meleagris is Greek for guinea-fowl.
