Can you tell me how many supreme court judges there are?

The Supreme Court consists of the Chief Justice of the United States and such number of Associate Justices as may be fixed by Congress. The number of Associate Justices is currently fixed at eight. Power to nominate the Justices is vested in the President of the United States, and appointments are made with the advice and consent of the Senate. Article III, §1, of the Constitution further provides that "the Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behaviour, and shall, at stated Times, receive for their Services, a Compensation, which shall not be diminished during their continuance in Office."

The gravest threat to American democracy is the overweening power of judges, and the recent Supreme Court appointments showed how fierce the fight against judicial tyranny can be. Phyllis Schlafly's spine-stiffening call to arms The Supremacists prepared conservatives for the Roberts and Alito confirmation battles. Now the revised and expanded paperback edition ensures that Americans won't surrender their self-government without a fight.
The Constitution's system of checks and balances between the three branches of government has been an illusion for decades. The reality is an increasingly brazen judicial supremacy. Judges dictate fundamental social policy, impose taxes, manage schools and prisons, and orchestrate elections. In short, Americans have exchanged the rule of law for the rule of judges.
The Supremacists begins with a survey of a half-century of judicial legislation. Chapter by chapter Schlafly reveals the astonishing scope of judicial ambition. Without any constitutional mandate, judges have banned the public recognition of God, redefined marriage, undermined national sovereignty, released a flood of pornography, institutionalized feminist dogma, and handicapped law enforcement.
But Schlafly's most startling revelation is the origin of judicial supremacy. The tyranny of judges stems not from the modest claims of Marbury v. Madison but from the infamous Dred Scott decision-the most carefully concealed skeleton in the judicial supremacists' closet. In spite of everything, Schlafly concludes, the Constitution is on democracy's side. It provides all the tools necessary-if only we'll use them-to rescue America from the tyranny of judges.

Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Gitmo Detainees
Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Gitmo Detainees
PlusSupreme Court Rules in Favor of Gitmo DetaineesSupreme Court Rules in Favor of Gitmo DetaineesThe Associated PressThe Supreme Court ruled Thursday that foreign terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay may challenge their detention in U.S. civilian courts. The court ruled 5-4 that the government is violating the constitutional rights of prisoners. (June 12)A divided Supreme Court says foreign terror suspects held at Guantanamo Bay have the right to challenge their detention in civilian courts. It's the third high court ruling on the subject. The previous two times, the administration and the Republican-controlled Congress changed the law to block detainees from court.Writing for the five-four majority, Justice Anthony Kennedy said: "THE LAWS AND CONSTITUTION ARE DESIGNED TO SURVIVE, AND REMAIN IN FORCE, IN EXTRAORDINARY TIMES."(SOT: MICHAEL RATNER/CENTER FOR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS)(13:06:35) I HAD TEARS IN MY EYES. I JUST THINK IT'S THE MOST CRITICAL DECISION WE'VE WON IN YEARS AND HOPEFULLY BEGINS TO END REALLY THE EXCESSES OF THE SO CALLED WAR ON TERROR OF THIS ADMINISTRATION. The Center for Constitutional Rights represents many of the 270 men still held at the U-S Naval base in Cuba. Among the prisoners are men considered high-value targets. They including Khalid Sheik Mohammad, who the government says was the mastermind of the September 11th attacks. (SOT: MICHAEL RATNER)(13:07:38) I THINK THE HIGH MAJORITY OF PEOPLE AT GUANTANAMO WILL BE FREED BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT JUST DOES NOT HAVE THE EVIDENCE TO HOLD THEM. In Rome, President Bush said he will look into whether new legislation is appropriate.(SOT: PRESIDENT BUSH)(13:50:12) AS TO THE SUPREME COURT'S DECISION. WE'LL ABIDE BY THE SUPREME COURT'S DECISION. THAT DOESN'T MEAN I HAVE TO AGREE WITH IT. THIS IS A DEEPLY DIVIDED COURT AND I STRONGLY AGREE WITH THOSE WHO DISSENTED. The courts most conservative members dissented. Antonin Scalia wrote that the U-S is 'at war with radical Islamists" and that the court's decision "will make the war harder on us. It will almost certainly cause more Americans to be killed."It's not clear whether the ruling will lead to prompt hearings for the detainees. Federal judges are scrambling to read the decision and figure out how to proceed. ___ ___, The Associated Press.

Men in Black: How the Supreme Court Is Destroying America
Amazon Price: $15.38 (as of 12/28/2009)![]()
The Supreme Court Endorses Terrorists' Rights, Flag Burning, and Importing Foreign Law.
Is that in the Constitution?
You're right: It's not. But these days the Constitution is no restraint on our out-of-control Supreme Court. The Court imperiously strikes down laws and imposes new ones purely on its own arbitrary whims. Even though liberals like John Kerry are repeatedly defeated at the polls, the majority on the allegedly "conservative" Supreme Court reflects their views and wields absolute power. There's a word for this: tyranny. In Men in Black, radio talk show host and legal scholar Mark R. Levin dissects the judicial tyranny that is robbing us of our freedoms and stuffing the ballot box in favor of liberal policies. If you've ever wondered why-no matter who holds political power-American society always seems to drift to the left, Mark Levin has the answer: the black-robed justices of the Supreme Court, subverting democracy in favor of their own liberal agenda. In Men in Black, you'll learn:
How judicial activism upheld slavery and segregation
Why Roe v. Wade not only mandated abortion-on-demand but gutted the Constitution
How the Court imports laws from other countries to help win the culture war for extremists
Why the justices are granting illegal immigrants rights equal with citizens
How helping terrorists file suit against the United States is another innovation of our Supreme Court
Surprise: the liberal Supreme Court Justice who erected the "separation of church and state" was a member of the Ku Klux Klan
Decades of judicial activism have made the Supreme Court the most potent threat to American freedom. Men in Black, as Rush Limbaugh notes in his introduction, "couldn't be more timely or important, as liberals continue shamelessly to thwart the people, Congress, the president, and state governments by using the courts to dictate national policy... Men in Black is a tremendously important and compelling book." It could very well be the most important book you read this year.

Supreme Court Overturns Ban on Handgun Ownership
Supreme Court Overturns Ban on Handgun Ownership
In a landmark decision, the U.S. Supreme Court for the first time has ruled individual Americans have the right to own guns for personal use. The court struck down the toughest local gun law in the country -- a Washington, DC ban on handguns. Justices ruled the Second Amendment to the Constitution establishes individual gun rights, leading advocates to predict there will be many more court challenges to local gun laws. VOA's Chris Simkins reports.
