On August 29, 1988, Palin eloped with and married his high school sweetheart, Sarah Louise Heath, in a courthouse ceremony. The Palins have five children: three daughters, Bristol (born 1990), Willow (born 1995), and Piper Indy (born 2001), and sons Trig Paxson Van (born 2008), who has Down syndrome, and Track (born 1989), who is in the United States Army and scheduled for deployment to Iraq on September 11, 2008. On September 1, 2008 it was announced that their 17-year old daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant and intends to keep the baby and marry the father of her child.

Palin fishes and is a pilot, holding a Private Pilot Certificate.

Palin's stepmother, Faye Palin, ran unsuccessfully in 2002 for the mayoralty of Wasilla, Alaska to succeed Palin's wife, Sarah, who was term-limited. Faye Palin ran without her step-daughter-in-law's endorsement, because Faye is pro-choice and a registered Democrat.

In 2008, 400 miles from defending his Tesoro Iron Dog championship, he was injured and broke his arm when he was thrown 70 feet from his machine. He was sent to the hospital but managed to finish in fourth place. This race is the world's longest snowmobile race which traces the path of the Iditarod race with an extra journey of several hundred miles to Fairbanks added. He first competed in the race in 1993 and has been the champion four times. His racing co-pilot is Scott Davis. He has previously raced with Dusty Van Meter in the race, and they were co-champions in 2000 and 2002.

Todd Palin DWIA senior advisor to the John McCain presidential campaign has confirmed that the husband of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin was charged with DWI over twenty years ago.

McCain adviser Steve Schmidt told reporters in gathering in St. Paul before the Republican National Convention that Todd Palin was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Alaska in 1986. Palin reportedly was driving a pick-up truck with friends in the town of Dillingham, Alaska when he was stopped. Todd and Sarah were dating at the time.

The drunk driving story was broke by conservative correspondent David Brody, with the Christian Broadcasting Network News. Schmidt went on to say he was not worried about the news.
