Toe Fungus FAQs

Everything You Wanted to Know About Toe Fungus and Then Some!

1. What is toe fungus?
Toe fungus is an infection that gets under your nail and can spread quickly. It's scientific name is "onychomycosis." As with most fungi, it thrives in warm, dark places so your toenails are a perfect place. The fungus attacks the cells under your nails and then "eats" the debris. (Pretty nasty, huh?) Once it gets started, it spreads throughout the nail as the fungus continues to attack cells.

2. What are symptoms of toe fungus?
The main symptom you'll notice first is that your nail changes color. It can be anything from white, yellow or brown. As the fungus spreads, it may change color and eventually the entire nail will be affected.

You may also notice that the nail starts to lift from the nail bed. At this point, the fungus has a pretty strong hold on your nail.

The nails may become soft and powdery or thick and brittle. In many cases, they may also have a deformed shape.

Another lovely symptom is nail fungus can have an unpleasant odor. Not only will your toe nails look bad, they may smell funky.

3. Is toe fungus contagious?
Very! Once you have the infection it is very easy to spread it to other nails and other people. Even if you practice good hygiene, you can pick up toe fungus in any number of places. Here are a few examples:

  • Public shower rooms (gym locker rooms)
  • Sharing nail clippers or nail files (salons or if someone in your household is infected)
  • Wearing someone else's shoes if they are infected
  • Touching the unwashed hands of someone who is infected
  • Injury to the nail that lets the fungus get under it and spread

If you or anyone in your household has a toe fungus infection, it is very important that you practice proper hygiene so you do not infect someone else.

4. How difficult is it to treat toe fungus?
Toe fungus is extremely difficult to treat since it's under the nail and hard to reach. It's also very persistent. Regardless of the treatment you use, it could take up to a year to completely get rid of it. You'll also need to be very diligent and not miss a single day of treatment.

5. Do natural remedies work?
A lot of people have had really good results with vinegar. In addition, there are clinical studies that shoe tea tree oil works as well as over the counter anti-fungals. Since toe fungus is persistent, you may need to try more than one treatment (or a combination) until you find one that works for you.

6. What are the potential side effects of prescription toe fungus medications?
Prescription drugs like Lamisil can be tough on your liver and kidneys. Your doctor will perform tests for liver and kidney function before you start treatment so they can monitor if there's any change. Depending on your health and medical condition, you may not be able to take these medications at all. This is something to discuss with your doctor and seriously consider before agreeing to this treatment.

7. Why should I use a home remedy or over the counter treatment when my insurance will cover prescription medications?
Well, your insurance my not cover it to start out! Many insurance companies consider prescription toe fungus remedies as "voluntary" treatment, so they don't cover the cost. Expenses can run into hundreds of dollars a month so make sure you know how your insurance company views this before you sign up for this treatment!

Other Things You Need To Do While Treating Toe Fungus

While you're treating your toe fungus you don't want to spread it to other nails or people around you. There are some basic hygiene routines you should follow to avoid both.

1. Wash your hands regularly with warm soap and water - especially after touching your feet or toenails. You should also use a nail brush to get under the nails to remove anything that might be stuck under there. This is a way for fungus to get under the nail. Don't share your nail brush with anyone!

2. Use your own nail cutters or clippers. Again, don't share with anyone else. Also, make sure you don't cut so close to the nail that you break the skin.

3. Avoid nail salons. Most salons are not very good about sterilizing or cleaning equipment or sinks between customers. You do not want to spread your toe fungus to other people intentionally. Do your own pedicures until the fungus is gone. If you want to go to a salon after that, take your own tools for the technician to use just on you.

4. Unfortunately nail polish is not a good way to cover up your toe fungus. It can actually make the infection worse since the chemicals can further weaken the nail. To cover up your toenails, your best bet is closed shoes.

5. Make sure your feet are dry when you get out of the shower or bath. You may want to keep your own special towel just for your use to dry them off. That way you don't spread the toe fungus to anyone else who may use the same towel.

If you follow these simple steps, you can avoid spreading the toe fungus to others. What's more, once your fungus is cleared up, you can continue this routine to better ensure you don't get another infection from someone else.

More Things You Need to Know About Toe Fungus

Did you know what you put on your feet can also cause toe fungus?

Fungus likes dark, warm places so your shoes are the perfect place for fungi to thrive. You can help a little by wearing acrylic socks - not cotton. Acrylic wicks moisture away faster than cotton. Keeping your feet dry means a place toe fungus can't grow. Also, be sure to change your socks at least once a day. In addition, kick your shoes and socks off at the end of the day so your feet can air out and breathe.

Here's one you may have never thought of - flip flops! Many of us love to roam around in our flip flops in the summer, around the house or at the gym. The rubber flip flops in particular are a perfect host for bacteria and fungus. Make sure you wipe them down regularly with an anti-fungal detergent or cleaner.

And finally - don't share shoes (ladies!). Even if it's your best friend or relative! This is a great way to pick up a toe fungus from someone else.

I'm not really sure if I have the toe fungus or not. My feet are not as bad as the picture that was shown above. But, I have had both of my big toenails removed. Once for both because I had had in-grown toenails. (ouch) Then, once they had fully grown back, one was stepped on and that one had to be surgically removed. The funny part was that it grew back! The doctor told me that it would not. No, since they have been removed, they do not grow like a regular toenail. Although the in-grown part is not there, I think that since it does not grow properly I might have the fungus. Can you help?
