BACON VS. TOFU: Which side are you on?
Ranked #4,592 in Food & Cooking, #82,376 overall | Donates to Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue of NorCal
Welcome to the debate!
One the one hand there's tofu, which stands up for vegetarians and healthy eating everywhere. When most people think tofu, they automatically think things like "strict diets, liberals, hippies, vegan, meatfree living, PETA activists, treehuggers."
On the other there's bacon, the sizzling porkfat symbol for meatlover. If you eat bacon, most people assume you're an unhealthy Irish or British beer-drinking carnivore with no regard to an animal's rights or to healthy eating and living.
Sure, both are stereotypes. And maybe that's why the tofu vs. bacon debate can be so fun...and so heated.
I'm a meateater and a baconlover. BUT I love tofu and plenty of vegetarian and vegan food too, and I'm more of a treehugger and a liberal than most vegetarians I know.
I think Tofu and Bacon people can live and work together just fine -- and dare I say.... could even be on the same menu.
This is a lens focused on the great Tofu vs. Bacon debate, but also has some fun recipes, toys and shoutouts for both.

Tofu is really delicious if it's cooked well. Some people who think they hate tofu just haven't had gooooood tofu. (btw, the mapo tofu at P.F. Chang's is to die for).
I'm a vegetarian, so I haven't had bacon in a long time. But I have to admit that the smell of bacon makes me drool sometimes. But I would never want to actually eat it because it's so greasy and I remember from when I did eat meat that bacon would not sit well in my stomach.

To the guy who said bacon has been around forever... it actually hasn't. Tofu's been around for thousands of years, even before type of animal we know as a "pig," and especially before all the stuff we do to it to make it palatable, smoking, flavoring, grilling, etc. Tofu is versatile, as are things like tempeh and seitan. Bioloically, we've always been setup to be field-grazing vegetarians. We only turned to meat as an alternative source of food when climate changes or predators made our natural food sources scarce. Now that we have grocery stores, there's no reason to be a meat eater. I'll take some dirt on my mushrooms to parasitic worms in my cow burger any day! And it's not possible for you to be an environmentalist and be a meat eater, too.

Because of this fact the edge goes to tofu. Don't get me wrong, I love me some bacon, but as an ingredient to work with when cooking I'll go tofu every time, because of how much I can do with it.

Humans are designed for Vegtables. The long gut (intestines) denote this to be as it extracts the nutrients from vegtables. When you eat bacon the toxins from killed meat and the processing stays in the gut longer and can cause IBS and other ingestion problems. Meat was designed to quickly digest and be removed from the body so that these toxins and the like are removed quickly. But this can only be in the carnivore families such as dogs, cats, lions or any flesh eating animal. Only vegie and leafy eaters have long intestines such as humans to extract all the healthy nutrients. Look at your mortality rates and see who really has the most gut problems. You will always find meat eaters carry the greater risks. Live long and live a balanced diet, some meats are good it thoroughly chewed and digested and Pork is definately off the menu. It has very high fat content and replicates the human organs in length and process. It the next closet animal to human flesh.Think about it...ask someone who has eaten human flesh..there is little distinction between the two. (Survivors of the Chilean plane disaster)After all its your gut.

Pigs are for pets. The fat clogs arteries. Morning Star Farms makes a bacon substitute that was called "stripples", and goes with eggs for breakfast or put in BLT's. You can cook it up crunchy, but it is a little too salty for me. Loma Linda makes canned meat substitutes that resembles chicken, steak, hamberguers, etc. that is really delicious! AmericanDreamer says:
People who think that Tofu is healthier have all been taken in by the soy companies who all want you to THINK that it is better for you. Sure bacon is fatty, which is bad, which could lead to problems if you eat five pounds of it every day, but I would much rather die of a heart attack then from cancer, which is what soy and tofu will give you.
The idea that soy is good for you came from the asian cultures which supposedly eat a lot of it, and look how healthy they are (or were, before their diets became westernized). But first off, thier soy is different from ours, more fresh, straight from the plant, as apposed to horribly processed like ours. Second of all, they don't eat soy like we think they do. We actually now eat much much MORE then they do. Tofu as we know it today, is an american creation, not an asian one (tofu was created in China, but it was very different from tofu of today) and our method has unfortunately replaced the asian one. Take a moment to look at the ingredients in a few things in your pantry. You'll be shocked by how fast you find somthing with soy powder, soy protein, or soy anything. Especially if you shop for so-called, health food. It's in practically everything, and we are doing horrible things to our bodies because of it.
Soy in any form (though much more in the modern highly processed form) does nasty things to your hormones (especially estrogen). It can cause cancer, physical problems, and most bizzarely, can somewhat feminize men. Because it shoots up the estrogen levels, or the female hormone, it can reduce muscle mass, drop virility, and do all sorts of bad things to men. What it does to women is even worse. Quickens menopause (some people theorise that menopause wouldn't even exist if we totally cut out soy and other highly processed foods), cause PMS-like symptoms even when not at that time of month, often causes young girls to develope womenly-like body features much younger then they should (like, 11 or 12), and so many other terrible disorders. Messing with your bodies natural hormones is a very dangerous and scary thing. A baby who drinks baby formula instead of mothers milk (as they should) ingests the equivalent of I think 12 birth control pills worth of estrogen every week (I might be off on those numbers, as it has been a while since I reseached this, but I'm pretty sure this was it).
Worst of all is that these chemical imbalences in your body are not somthing which only affects you. It gets in your urine, which then gets into the water system, and eventually back into drinking water (and unlike lead and chlorine, it doesn't come out so easily with filters), thus making everyone susceptible, no matter how hard you try to avoid it. Because it's in your body, it also affects your children as well. We have destroyed the quality of our food and water so badly that the problem is now impossible to fix or avoid. If we somehow were able to stop now, we would still feel the affects of what we have done for at least 2 or 3 generations to come. It's a frightening thought. There are so many medical problems in the world today that we did not have a mere 200 years ago that stem from either this, or the enormous increase in sugar.
So, yeah, if it's a choice between a little extra fat and a possibility of a heart attack...or this...I'll take the bacon please (of couse since pigs are generally fed soy products they have it to, but at least you can find pork products which are properly raised and handled.
Better for you, way better tasting, I am 100% on the bacon side. Those who eat tofu because they think that it is healthier, and sadly misinformed. I can understand the animal rights thing, and the vegetarian/vegan thing, but there is no other good reason for someone to chose tofu over bacon...unless you don't like the taste of bacon, in which case...what the heck is wrong with you!!! :P
For the record, the reason that the asian culture is so healthy (or was, before we westernized their diets) is because they ate tons and tons of fish and vegetables ;) THAT is what we are supposed to eat. Eat fish and vegetables all your life and you will be one very healthy person.

I eat both, but if I had to give up one, I'd give up tofu. So many things would not taste as good without a bit of added bacon -- chard, spinach salads, Bacon and avocado sandwiches, baked beans, etc. It just enhances the taste of so many vegetables, whereas tofu needs something else to give it flavor.

Many friends are vegetarians and they are sooooo easy to cook for and we're all very tolerant of what each chooses to put in our bodies. Ann Marie says:
Soy is bad for you. It's a goitrogen, which causes thyroid disease. Sure, they eat it in Japan, but what they eat is *fermented* soy. Miso, tempeh, etc. -- all are traditionally fermented. Which reduces the phytates in soy. And they don't eat large quantities of soy. They eat it as a condiment.
Furthermore, they eat very large quantities of iodine (13 mg per day on average) -- via seaweed, bonito (fish) broth, and seafood. Soy interferes with iodine uptake (which is why it is a goitrogen and causes thyroid disease -- the thyroid gland needs iodine in large quantities). So by eating large quantites of iodine, they can afford small amounts of fermented soy.
Never before in history has any culture eaten such copious amounts of soy -- in the form of soy milk, soybean oil (which most restaurant foods are cooked in), and soy additives in most processed foods and all baby formulas.
And yet, we've been eating bacon for centuries. With no ill effects.
I used to be a vegetarian. I became very ill after a few years of that. Tofu is gross.
Give me bacon! (Nitrate free, and from humanely raised pigs.)

Clearly bacon is the modern choice. Have raised many pigs and can tell you they are wonderful converters of unwanted food and forest products to [people] useful food. Our best pork, especially the bacon, came from a couple of pigs raised on surplus organic apples, cheese (from a local organic plant) and organic squash. No tractors, soil compaction, long energy intensive supply chains, just simple local ingrediants. BTW pigs are not smart. Tofu is ok but bacon is clearly superior.

Soy, which is used to make tofu, was originally used as fertilizer in asia and was never even thought of as a human food. That is pretty darn sad, once it did find it's way to food it was then only given to pigs and animals later on to fatten them up. The amount of estrogen alone in there is enough to have people realize that it's not as healthy as you are led to believe. Sure it can taste like anything, but, do a bit of research on the food you put in your mouth. It's not a magic food subsititue, you are being lied to. And As for me... Bacon. It's a natural thing to eat, and providing you don't go overboard it's not that bad for you.

Well at this stage in our evolutionary track we have carnivorous teeth so bacon is on the menu along with any other tasty animal. Do I know what they do to those poor animals? Not exactly but it is delicious. I suppose they could be killed in a way less humane than a Lioness dragging an antelope down by its jugular and starting to dine as the animal finishes bleeding out and eventually dieing...but I doubt it.
On another note those damn pigs are just raising the greenhouse gas emissions that are causing global warming, I say we all eat bacon for the sake of poor old mother earth. Our planet depends on it.
We could rid ourselves of the delicious pig but don't forget that all those midwest soy fields are depending on the fertilizer our tasty livestock produce. So if your not eating bacon with your tofu then I will have to eat a little extra just to cover your share.

It's not a valid discussion! Meat raised with consciousness and heart is healthy, delicious, and good for the environment. However, the industrial pig farming that goes on in this country is deplorable. I eat bacon raised by my neighbors, raised in pastures and meadows, without added hormones or antibiotics, that is smoked, and not cured with unpronouncable chemicals. Conversely, industrial soy farming creates an environmental disater, and most of it is genetically modified. Have you ever seen mountain lion, elk, deer, or cranes in a soybean field? You probably never will! Yet I have seen all of those types of wildlife and more in pastures and meadows where pigs and other livestock are raised.

CheekyChimp, tone is often missed in online conversations. If your intent was to be light-hearted, I appologize for missing reading you. No harm, you cheeky beast. ;-)
I've studied and continue to study nutrition, on a personal level, because I've been concerned about raising healthy children. I've reviewed vegan diets, raw food diets, meat-only diets, vegetarian diets... you name it. I've, simply, come to the conclustion that a diet balancing fats, protiens and enzymes (in the traditional/cultural mode) is the wisest choice for my family.
I am against soy as a main food product for all (human, horse, cow, pig, chicken, etc); there are so many better plant protiens available. Aside from tannins, soy is also high in phytates (protien inhibitors) which can be limited through fermention in miso, natto, etc. But, no amount of processing done currently removes the phytoestregens. Phytoestregens are potent endocrine disrupters and also have a tendency to cause thyroid problems.
It just doesn't make sense to eat a "high protien" diet of soy if your body can't digest that soy protien does it? ;-)
I've known many silly pigs and I agree with you, all animals deserve to be raised and cared for in a humane and conscientious manner even if they are destined for the dinner plate. Humanely, carefully, raised animals are healthier and provide a better quality source of food (dairy, egg or meat).
As an aside, I also believe people who do not have an agricultural background can misunderstand proper management when they see it. Livestock animals are not housepets and shouldn't be treated as though they are. I worry about this because it can cause problems for knowledgable farmers and well intentioned visitors alike.
In food and farming, it seems to come down to being curious, educating ourselves and making the choice we think is best. I'm just glad there is so much information available for little to no cost!

I've never said eating flesh will make anyone immortal (no diet will). Nor did I say a head of lettuce will kill you. I have pointed out there is potential for contamination in ALL food choices. Which is why I believe it is best to find and purchase as much food as possible from local, responsible growers.

Bird flu isn't transferred by consumption of flesh.
Mad Cow disease can be caused by the consumption of tainted flesh but primarily brain tissue. Bovine will eat the afterbirth of another bovine without contration of mad cow (even if the mother was a confirmed case). Also, organo-phosphates are suspect in mad cow. How much organo-phosphate contamination is in the non-animal-based food supply? Living in farm country, I'd wager a lot.
Wasn't the last great eColi break-out found in baby spinach?
You have to make informed choices and find local, whole foods. Responsibly raised meat, dairy and chicken is incomparable to what is available in the common grocery store. Even in veggies, not all food is grown equal. :)

Interestingly enough pigs and humans should be warry of eating too much soy protien due to the high tannin levels found in soy beans. Tannins bind with the substrate protiens and digestive enzymes. This is bad news because enzymes work in concert with each other to complete there tasks. So, if one or two are bound-up by tannins the digestive enzymes can not do their jobs. Tannins binding with protiens means the body can not digest them. Tannins are also well known for their prowess at blocking the absorbtion of vitamins and minerals.
Tofu is too high in tannins to be considered a health food. It is more, likely, to be anti-nutritive (ie: blocking absorbtion or causing the body to strip nutrients from within the body for use in digestion).
Indigenous societies that used soy beans never used them as a protien replacer. They were intended as condiments most often fermented and occassionally (sparingly) sprouted.
Isn't it wonderful soy protien is used in just about EVERYTHING? Yummy industrial waste product that it is? MMMMM, MMMMM!
Seriously, there are better plant protiens to be used than those found in soy. But you shouldn't be missing out on all the non-hydrogenated, non-rancid, totally natural short, medium and long chain fats found in the fat of the pig. Healthy fat is essencial to a healthy diet.
High Tannin diets are not good for pig or human... so go eat some bacon.
