A Step by Step Approach to Toilet Training Cats

In order to make your cat's transition from using the litter box to using the toilet bowl as smooth as possible, we're going to use a step by step approach.

Begin by placing your cat's litter box next to your toilet. Remember to be patient with your cat. Since the litter box is in a new location he might make a few mistakes and that is to be expected.

Once your cat has used the litter box by the toilet for a week, it's time to raise the litter box a bit. You can place the litter box on top of a phone book or some newspapers.

The idea is to raise the litter box a little at a time until it is as high as the toilet seat. Make sure your cat uses the box for a week at each new level including toilet seat level.

Once your cat has used the litter box at toilet seat level, it's time make the actual switch from the litter box and focus on the toilet seat. Before your cat uses the actual seat, he needs to become used to it. This is where a toilet training kit for your cat should be used. Most kits come with at least several different sized toilet seats that fit right over your seat. The plastic seats range from the smallest sized diameter where cat litter is still used to the biggest with very little cat litter and a diameter that approximates the size of your toilet seat.

Again use each size (usually there are about three seats ) for about one week, then remove the plastic seat completely.

Your cat should now be using your toilet to do his business.

Toilet Training Cats - Important Points to Remember When Toilet Training Cats

During the time you're toilet training your cat remember to leave your toilet lid up, your toilet seat down, and always leave your bathroom door open.

Next, keep training in pace with your cat. You might have to go back a step or two if you go too fast.

Use praise and treats to positively reinforce your cat's proper behavior.

It typically takes a cat about one month to learn to use a toilet. But it could take 2 or even 3 months. Again, please be patient. You'll find that your extra time and effort will really pay off in the long run.
