A Game of Cat and Mouse
MGM later had more Tom & Jerry cartoons produced by outside studios in the 1960s (Gene Deitch's Rembrandt Films from 1961 to 1962, and Chuck Jones' Sib Tower 12 Productions from 1963 to 1967).
Tom and Jerry later resurfaced in TV cartoons produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions (1975-1977; 1990-1993) and Filmation Studios (1980 - 1982). The original Hanna and Barbera shorts are notable for having won seven Academy Awards, more than any other character-based cartoon series.
The plots of each short usually centre on Tom's frustrated attempts to catch Jerry, and the mayhem and destruction that ensues.
Tom never succeeds in capturing Jerry, mainly because of Jerry's own craftiness and cunning.
The shorts are famous for using some of the most destructive and violent gags ever devised for theatrical animation: Jerry slicing Tom in half, Tom using everything from axes, pistols, rifles, dynamite, and poison to try and murder Jerry, Jerry stuffing Tom's tail in a waffle iron, and so on. A recurring gag has Jerry causing some sort of an explosive to blow up in his adversary's face.
Main Characters
Thomas Cat first appeared in "Puss Gets the Boot" as Jasper 1940. Tom is a bluish-grey housecat who frequently gets the boot out of the house for causing damage while attempting to catch Jerry.Jerry Mouse is a small cheeky house mouse who always falls foul of Tom when he is trying to raid the fridge. Chaos ensues but Jerry usually wins in the end.
Butch is a black alley cat - who first appeared in the 1943 short, "Baby Puss" alongside a brown, mangy cat who first appeared in the 1943 short "Sufferin' Cats!" and a little but older-like gray kitten. Butch was the leader of the alley cat bullies that usually helps Tom catch Jerry, but here tormented Tom because his young female owner treated him literally like a baby, especially dressing up Tom up in a diaper, a bonnet, and pink mittens for all of his paws. Tom was quite a mock show for Butch and his gang, as well as Jerry.
Spike is a large bulldog who is particularly disapproving of cats, but a softy when it comes to mice. Spike has a few weaknesses that Tom tries to capitalize upon: his possessiveness about his bone and his ticklishness. He made his first appearance in the 1942 Tom and Jerry cartoon "Dog Trouble", and his first speaking role was in 1944's "The Bodyguard".
Quacker the duckling was voiced by Red Coffee, from Quacker's first appearance in 1950 up until 1957, though the voice has often been credited to Clarence Nash (who was better known as the voice of Donald Duck).
Toodles is one of Tom's girlfriends. She is based on the famous actress Lana Turner. Toodles first features in the 1946 short "Springtime For Thomas". She is in several episodes throughout the early 50's.
Mammy Two - Shoes is a heavy-set middle-aged black woman who often has to deal with the mayhem generated by the lead characters. As a partially-seen character, she was famous for never showing her head
