How to Make the Best Tomato and Cheese Sandwich - Real Comfort Food
Nothin' says SUMMER better than a homegrown tomato!
The BEST way to eat that tomato is to sit on the back porch steps with a salt shaker and go to town. My Mom taught me the following method when I was 5 years old: lick the tomato in one spot, shake salt on that spot, BITE!
The second best way to eat a homegrown tomato is to make a tomato and cheese sandwich. Sounds simple, doesn't it? Guess what? It is simple; but to make a really good sandwich, one must pay attention to the details.
One of those details is to use a homegrown tomato. If you do not have a one, wait until dark and sneak into your neighbor's garden--just kidding! In reality, buy a vine ripe tomato with the stem still attached at the grocery. If they are too, expensive, get an ordinary fresh tomato that is still a little green or hard to the touch, and let it sit on the window sill a day or two.
The best tasting tomatoes never see the inside of a fridge! (FYI--In January 2009, I still had tomatoes I grew in 2008! We had a really late hard frost in November, so I picked the green tomatoes and put them in a bowl to ripen on their own.)
Keep reading for I am presenting to you my recipe for the BEST tomato and cheese sandwich. Yes, it is comfort food for me! You can thank me in my "guest book" at the bottom of this page.
And by the way, do you know what a "love apple" is?
PS...I took all the photos! AND I grew the tomato!

The Perfect Knife for Slicing Tomatoes
The Pampered Chef Color Coated Tomato Knife #1064
Amazon Price: (as of 12/24/2009)![]()
Here is a tomato knife for your consideration. It was highly recommended by Southern Living Magazine.
I own it and love using it. Added bonus: when you cut lettuce with a plastic knife, it does not "rust" as fast". Why is this important? You can cut up an entire head of lettuce and put it in a baggie. Instant Salad--take out what you need and store the rest!
The knife comes with a cover--it is VERY sharp.
The picture is from the Amazon website and does not do the knife justice.

Here is a picture of my tomato knife.
Thank you for helping to "pay the rent".

Now back to our recipe:
STEP 1: Use 2 Slices of Fresh White Sandwich Bread
Slather on the mayo
I prefer LOTS of mayo on my fresh white bread -- use whole grain!!! STEP 2: Put on the FRESH, VINE RIPE tomatoes!
Homegrown are the best, but you can buy local tomatoes from the farmer's market or the local grocery. STEP 3: Add cheese!
Kraft Deluxe American or Deli Sliced Kraft is preferred by moi, but use your favorite cheese -- as long as it is not that individually wrapped cr*p. Optional--thinly sliced sweet onion
Red or vidalia onions can add zip! Enjoy your sandwich!
Just try taking a picture and not sampling.By the way, I used two different plates for the photos. Which color do you like the best? You can put an answer in my guestbook.

DIY: How to Grow Tomatoes
Great tips and be found on blogs!
My own best tip: If you grow tomatoes in a container, you MUST add a source of calcium to the soil to prevent 'blossom end rot'. That is when the bottoms of the tomatoes turn black. I diluted powdered milk in my watering can. Ground up egg shells also came in handy.

- I love tomato sandwiches too. We use only Duke's Mayo. Your sandwich looks really really good. I've never added onion, but will now give it a try. Excellent.

What Is A "Love Apple"?
A tomato moniker that originated in the 16th century when tomatoes from North Africa were known in Italy as pomo dei Mori, "apples of the Moors." That was transliterated to the French pomme d'amour . . . "love apple."
