Poker with Tom Dwan

Tom Dwan, online name "durrrr", is deemed one of the best online poker players. He is a 21 year-old college dropout originally from New Jersey who has become one of the biggest cash game players in a very short amount of time. Did I mention he is only 21? He has said to have made over $2,000,000 playing high stakes poker online. He makes a session out of sitting down with the top poker pros such as Phil Ivey, Patrick Antonius, John Juanda and others at limits as high as $300/$600 NLH. It's not a big deal for him. He does this consistently and wins!

Tom Dwan is famous throughout internet forums and chat rooms. When other college students see a young player such as Tom Dwan being so successful, they believe they can make large amounts of money too. He is the trail blazer for young online poker players.

Dwan began playing poker at age 17 in New Jersey. He first started out on play-money tables on Paradise Poker, before he deposited some cash and started playing low-stakes SNGs. He decided to choose a screen name with the goal of tilting people ("durrrr"). He saw from the beginning that he was a winner. He said "I never really worried if I was good at it; I just thought everyone else was bad and it seemed like an easy way to make money."

Two months into his poker career he moved to the cash tables. By the time he turned 18 he had won around $15,000 and was looking for higher stakes to play in. He says he started playing $40/$80 limit and went on a good run to win about $35k. Then he lost $20k and switched to no-limit. At that time he had around $40k to his name and was playing $5/$10 NL. Then he moved up to $25/$50 losing about $10k. He proceeded to move back down until about three months later when he had more money and has been gaining ever since then. He has risen to the top in a very short amount of time but Dwan is quick to downplay his success. "I run good, what can I say?" he said jokingly.
A couple years ago Bluff magazine ran a piece on Tom Dwan and his housemate David Benefield ("Raptor517"). Chris Vaughn watched Tom Dwan play a quick session. He said a quick "sesh" for Dwan involved him opening up six tables with the smallest limit being played was $100/$200 NL Hold'em. In less than an hour Chris Vaughn witnessed this fearless, young poker phenom win nearly $200,000. He made this amount of money in less than an hour! That means he made approximately $4500 a minute or $75 a second! That sounds better than any job he could get out of college.

His reputation is so well known among fellow online poker players that it is sometimes hard for him to get a game.

Tom Dwan's ability to make stellar calls is that of legend. On one such hand he called down Patrick Antonius $100,000 rive bluff with third pair. He says, "In that hand I had a timing tell on Patrik Antonius, but most of the time it comes down to putting your opponent on a range of hands and deciding what they would do with that range a percentage of the time. Against a really good play I can never be 100%, but if I am 75% sure I am always going to make the call."

Tom Dwan Winnings & Highlights

Intelligent & Open Minded

When people tell Dwan that he is a natural talent he is quick to squash that idea. He says "I think the natural talent thing is pretty overrated. I think anyone can learn to play poker and do pretty well if they are intelligent and open-mind."

Tom 'durrrr' Dwan's Million Dollar Challenge

Game On! Phil Ivey Accepts Tom 'durrrr' Dwan's Million Dollar Challenge; Dwan Explains Motivation

The high-stakes poker world buzzed earlier this week when online star Tom "durrrr" Dwan, in conjunction with a feature in the February issue of BLUFF Magazine, announced a challenge to all other poker players. Dwan's open challenge included a minimum of 50,000 online hands to be played simultaneously at four or more tables of no-limit hold'em or pot-limit Omaha, as follows:

"I'm making this heads-up challenge to the world. Anyone can accept. Four tables, minimum of $200/$400, and I'll put up $1.5 million to their $500,000. We play 50,000 hands minimum and if they end up a dollar after rake they keep the side money or whatever. So basically, if you and I played and you won a dollar, you
Mansion Poker
would get my $1.5 million and if I won a dollar I would win your $500,000.... So I'm giving a million dollars free if anyone thinks they can do it."

"Anyone," though, had one exception as noted by Dwan. In a later post on a prominent online poker forum, he noted that the challenge was not open to his close friend Phil "OMGClayAiken" Galfond, though Galfond's deliberate style of play, radically different from that of Dwan, was also cited by third parties as a possible reason why. In addition, Dwan shared with PokerNews his motivation for issuing the challenge.

"In my probably biased opinion," according to Dwan, "the two most interesting, commonly played poker games are heads-up no-limit holdem, and heads-up pot-limit Omaha. I've played a lot of people in them; however, it's very rare that someone will play me at more than two tables. In my again-biased opinion, it's also more interesting to play at least four tables at once. I say this because while playing four tables, there is less likelihood that a winner or loser will be based on one or two pots, and the better player will make roughly twice as much money per hour compared to two tables. Additionally, when your opponents are doing something wrong for 90 minutes straight, you can notice it earlier, and take more advantage of it on four tables, netting at least four times the profit -- although one would assume most opponents would also adjust in less time on four tables.

"For all these reasons, I wanted to do something to get people to play me four tables of PLO and NLHE. Maybe it'll cost me a lot of money, or maybe it will be profitable... but either way I'm laying $1.5 million to $500,000 on a side bet, for 50,000 hands of whichever game someone chooses. If one of us is up dollars after those 50,000 hands, they get the side-bet money, and for the first time in a while I'll have four tables heads-up for more than an hour or two. I plan on playing everyone who accepts this 'challenge' except for Phil Galfond (because he is a very good player and friend); however, I obviously reserve the right to cancel future bets until the money is in escrow (in case I lose many current ones in a row). That said i think its very unlikely that anyone who wants to play doesn't get their shot at some point in the next year or so (i'm not really sure how long these will take). Anyway, hopefully these matches will be fun for all participants, and observers, even if it is costly for some people -- hopefully not me! Only time will tell...."

While such challenges aren't new in the poker world - Daniel "KidPoker" Negreanu created a different flavor of high-stakes challenge rotating through several poker variants a couple of years back -- it remained to be seen if any of today's deepest-pocketed pros would accept the odds laid by Dwan. In short order, Phil Ivey announced his acceptance on Barry Greenstein's "Tuesdays with Ivey" show on PokerRoad Radio, while also suggesting that David Benyamine and Patrik Antonius are considering it as well.

Ivey, who was cited in several recent online summaries as having netted over $6 million in 2008 in his online cash-game play, is well positioned to meet Dwan's challenge and has a long history of accepting poker prop bets where he believes he has an edge. Benyamine, likewise, is similarly well-bankrolled, is one of the most feared Omaha players on the planet, and enjoyed a breakout 2008 across several poker disciplines that included the winning of his first WSOP bracelet last summer. Antonius is also widely noted as a fearless player and has been a participant in the highest live and online games for years.

Said Ivey, in discussing his acceptance of the challenge, "I've never posted a challenge like this... I'm just assuming that everyone knows I'm going to play them - I'm going to play every game.... I'll play anybody, at every game there is. Most of the time I start off as the underdog, I feel like. Eventually I'll figure them out, figure out what they're doing - mak[ing] good enough adjustments to where I'm a favorite against them."

Tom Dwan has started to play a lot more pot-limit omaha because he believes his edge is bigger, even though he is better at NL, because the people he is playing against are worst he believes. He claims this is because in PLO you get more cards, you get more good hands and it's easier to think you're amazing. He says it is a better game to make money off of.

Since Tom Dwan has turned 21 he has decided to join the live tournament circuit. He has had some great success so far with a 4th place finish at the WPT Foxwoods event (NLH), 2nd place finish at the Aussie Millions Poker Championship (PLO), and 2nd place finish at the WPT Borgata Winter Open (NLH).

Those who watch Dwan play say he has the audacity and raw intelligence that resembles Phil Ivey. He is known to be a very nice guy and easy to get along with but journalist Alun Bowden witnessed him play a $2,000 game of rock, paper, scissors with another poker phenom Sorel Mizzi. He stared at his opponent, looking fierce with his glazed eyes focused on his every move.

He is fearless when it comes to gambling. During the 2007 WSOP he had $50,000 prop bet with his house-mate David Benefield where he had to play a series of high stakes chess matches against an International Chess Master who started without one rook. Dwan lost that bet.

Latest news on the continuing million-dollar, 50 000 hand NLHE poker challenge thrown down by Tom 'durrr' Dwan is that he and his first challenger, Patrik Antonius, managed to complete another 425 hand session Friday which saw Antonius regain the lead.

The Monaco-based poker ace is now around $108 000 ahead...but there are still 44483 hands to play and in this exciting confrontation anything can happen, and probably will.

Unfortunately the session had to abandoned due to bad Internet connections, with the latest clash bringing to 5 517 the total number of hands played between Dwan and Antonius.

After a fifteen-day hiatus, Tom "durrrr" Dwan and Patrik Antonius finally resumed their $200-$400 pot-limit Omaha challenge match on Monday evening, completing 914 hands over the course of three hours. Previously down over $140,000 to Dwan over the life of the challenge, Antonius emerged from the session as an $87,611 winner and closed that gap to $53,640. After nearly a month of on-again, off-again meetings, Dwan and Antonius have logged only 10% of the required 50,000 hands, having played 5,086 pots to date. Though Dwan has not publicly commented on the reasons behind the long delay since their last meeting, armchair quarterbacks around the poker forums have speculated that it could have a lot to do with
Dwan's $3.5 million online downswing since the start of 2009, including million-plus losses to Phil Ivey in recent heads-up play at the $500-$1,000 level.

Tom Durrr Dwan recently challenged poker players around the world to play 50,000 hands with him with tickets of $200 or $400, the prize for beating him - $1.5 million! On the other hand, if he wins, the opponent would only have to pay $500,000. The Durrr Challenge as it is widely known generated a lot of frenzy in the poker world and gained instant fame for Tom Dwan and the other poker pros who accepted the challenge, namely Benyamine, Ivey and Antonius. All these, including Dwan's are established names in the poker world.

However, only a few days down the line and interest is fading. So far, the pros are not even done playing 10% of the 50,000 hands and looks like the challenge probably won't see the end of the day. Even the official site tracking the event has changed its tone to a may be/may be not state providing fodder to the widespread belief that the game will be scrapped soon.

An excerpt from the site poker-king.com:

"The challenge got underway on February 18th, with Dwan

Tom Dwan, known online as Durrrr, has been pretty prominent in the first two episodes of High Stakes Poker's 5th season. Although it's hard to know exactly how each player is doing because only a select number of hands are shown, Dwan seems to be right at home among some of the best high stakes players in the world.

GSN made it clear that at least some of the action would revolve around Dwan when they released this video before the season's premier show aired. However, the hand that seems to have spurred the most discussion thus far took place at the end of the the second episode. It was the very last hand shown and interesting in a number of different way

It hasn't taken long for some of the world's most accomplished online poker players to accept the $1.5 million challenge thrown out earlier this week by online poker ace Tom "durrr" Dwan . Phil Ivey, David Benyamine, Barry Greenstein and Patrik Antonius have all picked up the gauntlet, according to Poker Road Radio.

Dwan's extraordinarily confident challenge earlier this week was that he would put down $1.5 million to any challenger's $500 000 in games played on four virtual tables simultaneously, heads-up with minimum $200/$400 stakes. Each contender will have to play at least 50 000 hands and if the challenger finishes even a dollar more than where he started, he wins Dwan's $1.5 million. Conversely, if 'durrrr' ends up ahead, he gets to keep the challenger's $500 000.
