The Green Alternative for Tompkins County
At the national level, the Democratic Party is quickly turning the hope of 2008 into the betrayal of 2009, with the Obama Administration and the Democratic Congress supporting clean coal, refusing to respect the Endangered Species Act to deal with global warming, giving away pollution permits, defending the suspension of habeas corpus, setting up kangaroo courts, keeping American soldiers fighting overseas, hiding evidence of torture, protecting Bush and Cheney from accountability, maintaining an office of government religion, and claiming extraordinary powers for the President.
It's not the kind of change we were promised, and it sure isn't much cause for hope.
Ithaca's Maurice Hinchey is fairly liberal, though he's gone over the edge with his crusade on a new presidential helicopter that the President doesn't want. Michael Arcuri, on the other hand, who represents most of the rest of Tompkins County, is a right wing Blue Dog Democrat, continuing to support Republican policies as if George W. Bush is still President.
Is it time for the Tompkins County Green Party to re-emerge, and mount a challenge to Arcuri from the Left? Share your opinion in the GUESTBOOK at the bottom of this page.

- Agreed. I'm going to go out on a limb, and state that it's most effective to campaign for state and nationwide candidates while also campaigning for local candidates. The Green Party is about a lot more than just abstract ideals. It's also about vigorous grassroots organizing. This meeting next week of the Tompkins County Green Party (July 21 - 7:00 PM in Stewart Park) is the start of strong new effort to grow some larger turf.

- I think it's a great idea to challenge Arcuri. Also important in 2010 is getting enough votes for the Green gubernatorial candidate for the party to regain ballot status, which would make it much easier to run local candidates across the state.
