Using Tong Ren for Emotional Distress

Have you ever suffered from depression or anxiety? Or watched in despair as a beloved child or sibling sank deeper and deeper into depression or suicidal thoughts? Or perhaps there is an elderly parent whose anxiety is almost paralyzing? Or who suffers from Alzheimers?

Can depression and anxiety be cured using Tong Ren Therapy? The answer is yes.

Because of personal experience, I empathize with anyone who has borne the pain, financial loss and emotional burden of psychological illness and despaired of finding a solution. I am fortunate to have always had medical insurance that allowed me to help myself and my loved ones through some soul-draining and chaotic times. But even with the best of psychologists, some issues remain unsettled.

That is why I am so very grateful to Ruth Dean, a dear internet friend, who directed me to Tom Tam's page in September 2007. I only wish that I had known about Tong Ren earlier.

I am eager to share Tong Ren with everyone I meet and to spread the word far and wide about this amazing healing technique. As an individual who has been subject to lifelong anxiety attacks, it is reassuring to know that with about ten minutes of Tong Ren work on myself, I can settle into a peaceful state.

My deepest hope is that you will find this information useful and that it may be of benefit to you and your loved ones.

Who is Tom Tam? What is Tong Ren?

Tom Tam is a licensed acupuncturist in Massachusetts, a healer, author, poet, and an incredibly warm and caring human being. Born in Tai Shan, China, he came to the United States in 1975 as a political refugee. Since 1982, he has been practicing acupuncture, Tai Chi, and Chi Gong healing with great success. Tom began training students in acupuncture and Tui Na in the Boston area in 1984, and in the mid-1990s, Tom created the Tong Ren Healing System. Tom's method combined Western medicine and traditional Eastern medical knowledge and practice to form a new theory for understanding and treating difficult diseases.

For over 25 years, Tom has been one of the foremost students of Master Gin Soon Chu, the fifth generation master of traditional Yang family Tai Chi Chuan, who is the descendant of Grandmaster Yang Shou Chong. Tom has taught Tai Chi Chuan for more than 20 years in the greater Boston area and many of his Tai Chi students teach Tai Chi Chuan in America.

In 1994, Tom took a group of students to mainland China and Taiwan in order to share his Tong Ren healing method. In Guang Zhou Tradition Chinese Medical College, he demonstrated Tong Ren healing for weight loss, followed by a trip to Taipei to demonstrate Tong Ren's benefit on leukemia.

Tom organized the first Guinea Pig class was formed for treating cancer in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 2001. Guinea Pig classes for healing have spread to many countries around the world.Tom continues to practice, teach students, and travel the world to share his dreams.

The classes are called Guinea Pig classes because it is a Chinese belief that one should not change the name of something that is working successfully. Thus, after people were cured using Tong Ren in 2001, the name Guinea Pig was set in stone.

Tom Tam's Tong Ren Healing System uses a Western diagnosis of a medical problem and traditional Chinese medicine based on acupuncture points, to remove what Tom describes as blockages in the body. Removal of these blockages may also include acupuncture, chi gong and Tui Na, a vigorous type of massage.

However, the method that Tom devised and found to be most effective is the use of an acupuncture doll and a magnetic hammer which the Tong Ren practitioner uses to tap on the doll at acupuncture points where the blockage has occurred. In this way, the symptoms of the individual's problems are relieved.

As Tom explains, and as explained later in this lens, the healing occurs through the collective unconscious, a concept you may be familiar with through the writings of Carl Jung.

Ranging from medical conditions such as Lyme disease, neurological Lyme, MLS, tumors, cancer, Hodgkins lymphoma, leukemia, thyroid malfunction, cardiovascular HIV, alcoholism, obesity, to common complaints such as the common cold, headache, plantar fascitis, migraine, insomnia to emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety, Tom has designated the points where the blockages occur in the human anatomy. And many people with these problems have been completely cured, seen their disease go into remission or experienced significant improvement.

These diseases/illnesses and tapping points are covered in the book "Tom Tam Healing System." "A Lazy Bum's Healing, A Cross Reference Therapy Manual," is a good reference book to own because it is a spiral-bound large-format guide that lies flat and is easy to use.

Often Tong Ren practitioners will specialize in an illness or syndrome. There are several broadcasts of practitioners specialize in weight loss and addictions and several who specialize in autoimmune disorders (Tom classifies arthritis, fibromyalgia and lupus and autoimmune disorders). Tom himself leads several general tapping sessions each week.

Tapping or "dolling" on the Live Broadcasts are generally very short, but if you can tap for yourself or have a friend or practitioner tap for you, it is much more relaxing, and, in my opinion, more beneficial. You may feel a number of effects, such as pinpricks on your skin, tingiing, heat, relaxation, pulling, blood flowing more vigorously or you may feel nothing until much later.

The length of time you would tap varies -- generally, I find 10 minutes of tapping on myself to be effective, but a practitioner would tap for a longer period.

You can expect to experience many different sensations -- including heat, tingling, odd body sensations, feeling as though your blood is pumping through body -- or you may just feel relaxed or go to sleep. However, you may experience nothing at all during the session only to realize the effect later. Tom always assures us that the chi (Chinese for life force) is flowing.

Just a Disclaimer

Time to Wake Up?

The information in this lens is for the purpose of information only and is in no way intended to treat, diagnose or prescribe to any individual for any disease. Each individual is responsible for deciding upon his or her health care in the manner he or she deems appropriate.

In America we receive a daily blitz of health messages on television, where the ads suggest that we seek drugs from our doctor that may correct our depression, anxiety or impotence; but the disclaimers add that we run the risk of having strokes, heart attacks, impaired memory, kidney or liver damage, paralysis and other "side-effects." Manufacturers place pink ribbons on products which are known to be implicated in cancer because they know that the color pink will evoke a sympathetic response and increase product sales. "Pink-washing" as it is called sometimes leads to hilarious ads, such as, to paraphrase, "Bake to Cure Cancer."!! Not really such a good idea, because apparently sugar feeds the growth of cancer.

Many are still asleep, but as more individuals spread the message about alternative therapies, the healing value of food and other tools for maintaining and restoring health, the picture should change.

Tong Ren Works Through the Collective Unconscious

Excerpts from "A Lazy Bum's Healing-Tong Ren Therapy Cross Reference Manual"

Here are a few quotes from the "Lazy Bum's" forward by William C. Daly, M.D.

"Its [Tong Ren] healing power grows a quantum leap by harnessing another natural tendency we have all observed --harmony...Tong Ren Therapy utilizes...natural tendencies toward synchronization to bring diseased organs back into harmony with healthy biolectrical patterns...

"Carl Jung, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and others have described the ongoing development of a sphere of collective unconsciousness...We are all part of this progressive sphere of organization, regardless of our awareness..The identity of the individual practitioner does not matter, because the healing power does not come from the practitioner but rather rom the collectively evolving milieu."

"Picture the Tong Ren tapper as a piano tuner striking wires of errant pitch so they may be brought into hamony with a series of tuning forks, each with complex waveform. The actual tuning is done by a collection of maestros whose presence can be felt but not seen...

"Tong Ren practitioners never make a medical diagnosis or prescribe a treatment; they do not practice medicine. They depend upon your doctor or yourself to provide a diagnosis and the location of a medical problem. They never promise a cure or successful results. They can only invite you to accept synchrony with healthy collective energy, and allow it to cure or stabilize your ailment. When you experience others becoming cured, your belief will permit our collective unconsciousness to heal you also."

Nurture Yourself - Nurture Others

Whenever we are faced with crushing burdens, it sometimes help to nurture others because helping someone else helps us forget our own pain. Equally important is taking the time to nurture one's self. Some people like to pamper themselves with long soaking baths, others with meditation and spending time on crafts and hobbies. But we all know that shopping, alcohol and eating are not healthy or satisfying distractions.

Tom's Comments on Anxiety and Depression

Watching and interacting with pets can reduce blood pressure and increase feelings of happiness.

The following quotes about depression and anxiety are taken from Tom's book "Tom Tam Healing System."

Anxiety

"Anxiety is considered a psychological disorder by Western theory. Chinese theory doesn't separate beyond the mind and body in that the mind can cause a physical problem as well as a physical problem can damage the mind. T5 is the physical heart point or the nerve, that when pinched, can cause the heart to beat irregularly. An irregular heartbeat can affect the mind; thus to correct the mind, one must correct the body first. We know that emotions can cause chemical changes in the brain, and chemical changes in the brain can cause emotional changes.

"Any emotion is related to the frontal lobe in the brain. Tong Ren treatment and Chi Gong for past life treatment have amazing results."

Depression

"If we think about mind and body working together in harmony, we should treat the body as well because the body can cause the mind's problems. Another thing is when the mind changes the chemicals in the brain also change, and when the chemical sin the brain change they can cause the mind and mood to change. So in treatment we must evaluate the mind and body together.

"We usually find that there is a blockage at T5 on the left side; often there is a blockage at T7 on the right side also. T5 is a heat source point TCM believes that the heart is controlled by emotion and relates with the mind. T7 is a blood circulation point, which cause emotion also. Many patients also have a lot of pimples on the back. This is from a T4 blockage. It is also from the T5 affect.

Treating Depression, Anxiety and Emotional Imbalance

Following are several diagnoses or syndromes in the area of mental health for which tapping points on the acupuncture doll are given. All of these points govern various internal organs. The points are designated on the doll and in the book "Tom Tam Healing System." So following the protocol, you would tap on these points while calling out aloud their names: C-2 Right, GB-3 Right and so on..

Depression
Main point: C2Rt, GB13Rt, Yintang, SI16
Support points: H7, LV3, T5Lt, Yiming

Anxiety
Main Point: C2Rt, GB13Rt, SI16Rt
Support Points: T5Lt, LV3, H7, Yiming, LI18

Emotional Imbalance
Main Point: C2Rt, GB12Rt, GB16, LI18
Support Points: T5, SI16, P7, H7, K1

The abbreviations stand for:
C - Cervical
Rt - Right side
GB - Gall Bladder
Yintang - Middle of forehead - third eye
H - Heart
LV - Liver
T - Thoracic
Lt - Left side
GV - Governing Vessel
Tiayang - located at the temple
TW - Triple Warmer, located at the stomach
P - Pericardium
BL - Bladder
SI - Small intestine - Sky Window
LI - Large intestine
Yiming -The yiming is an acupuncture point located at the back of the head which is also stimulated for problems with sleep issues such as insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, eye disorders and tinnitus.

Relaxation Is Important

With Tong Ren, the relaxation effect is an important one. Relaxing in nature, listening to beautiful music, time spent in nature and in solitude are important. Art and crafts, and cooking are also relaxing for some people. When I'm feeling agitated or worried, nothingis more calming than an hour spent in the kitchen preparing pupusas and curtado or a Japanese dish like onyagiri.

When one is ill, it is extremely important to focus on things that are pleasant and uplifting, The daily news is probably not something any one who is suffering from cancer or other serious diseases should be watching every day.

Watching television more than two hours of television is probably not a good idea either. Sometimes one must screen movies carefully. I recently watched a movie that was recommended as a comedy in which there was a scene of sickening brutality.

Here is the place where you can find out all about the live Tong Ren guinea pig broadcasts and what time they are being held. Sometimes the feed doesn't work properly, but Tom Tam and many others still believe we are receiving the chi or qi -- life force. I may have mentioned before that they are called guinea pig classes because the Chinese believe that you shouldn't change the name of something that is successful -- Tom had the first successful healing using this method in 2001 with a lady who had cancer.

Would You Like to Practice Tong Ren?

If you think that you'd like to practice Tong Ren on yourself, friends or animal companion(s), then you will need the acupuncture doll, the magnetic hammer and the book "Tom Tam Healing System." Not absolutely necessary, but useful is "A Lazy Bum's Healing" -- this is a large format, spiral bound book that lies flat and has a list of ailments along with points to tap.

Watching the broadcasts and listening to the teleconferences will give you many other ideas about tapping.

Often I copy the comments that appear below the Tong Ren broadcasts into a Word file and save them for future reference (this may not be possible on all browsers).

Although not necessary, you might want to get an anatomy book because listening to the broadcasts will probably pique your interest in human anatomy!

Finally I recommend finding a partner to practice with -- especially if you have a difficult problem you'd like to heal. There's nothing like having an enthusiastic companion on the Tong Ren journey to speed your healing. Although, I have experienced incredible energy flows tapping for myself, there is nothing quite as relaxing as having someone else tap for you.

Another suggestion -- there are alternative healing groups on Meet-Up and perhaps you can find a group or start a group in your city. Here's the link to Meet-Up http://www.meetup.com/

Monica's page offers a web page in Spanish. She gives a very good description of how Tong Ren works. This excerpt from her page has a reference to animal healing:
http://monicacalvo.com/_wsn/page2.html

"Perhaps as more people practice Tong Ren, eventually Tong Ren will be practiced in the whole world. Hypnotic suggestion and guided meditation are practiced in the Western world. Tong Ren Therapy is beyond the power of suggestion since we can produce healing effects on babies and animals. This means that Tong Ren Therapy does not need the use of language to influence the patient. It is a transfer of Chi, healing and knowledge without any guided thought or the use of the power of suggestion. If a group of Tong Ren therapists perform Tong Ren Therapy, they can gather more Chi to affect another group of Tong Ren therapists. In this way the healing power of the whole group of Tong Ren therapists keeps growing."

"Scientific studies have shown that one brainwave can affect others. This is called brainwave entrainment or brain frequency entrainment. In nature, birds, fishes and all animals have the capacity for brainwave entrainment. When a group of birds are flying, all the birds follow the leader. When we look at a school of fish swimming, all the fish follow a leader too. The point (pilot?) bird and pilot fish do not need to make any sound or physical signal for others to follow. Their guiding signal is the brainwave. Brainwave entrainment triggers a frequency following response. According to scientific studies, a mother's brainwave entrainment can alter a baby's heartbeat and brainwave. When two women live together, it may change their menstrual cycle, manifesting the effect on the hormone levels."

Things that Worked for Us-Available on Amazon

Dealing with Depression, ADD and Executive Function Disorder

I'm sure I would have used Tong Ren Therapy had it been available in 1997. However, we did use EFT (Emotionally Free Technique), Reiki and Sound Therapy.

Although we did not purchase all these items from Amazon, these were tools the psychiatrist who was working with my son's psychologist recommended that he use to rebuild/help his brain when brain trauma was discovered through SPEC analysis at the Amen Clinic.

My son did not want to use all the prescription medications that were suggested, and his doctor had recommendations for some natural products. So we used one pharmaceutical drug and the rest herbal and natural supplements.

We did not always use the same brand of fish oil--if you use fish oil, you will have to make a decision -- some fish oils are free of PCBs and heavy metals. These are more expensive and so we alternated between brands.

The serontonin uptake precursor we used was not Panicyl but rather Teen Link. Panicyl appears to have the same ingredients.

We used the Wild Divine machine at the doctor's suggestion because biofeedback sessions are rather expensive, and this was suggested as an alternative.

Sometimes children who appear to have oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), have brain trauma. The SPEC scan and the book are helpful in understanding behavior.

Although the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill is supported by pharmaceutical companies, it is still an amazing resource for any one who has a family member suffering from mental illness or who is confined to an institution. Other members will offer you support and assist you as you try to navigate the confusing, frustrating and truly desperate tangle of paperwork as insurance companies try to evade payment or move your loved one from institution to institution. Very often you will have less than a day to find another institution for a teenager who desperately needs care.

Your friends will usually be able to offer you sympathy, but members of NAMI have often navigated these waters and will be able to give you concrete facts and hard strategies on dealing with insurers, case workeers, and also help you to place your experience iin perspective. Mental health infrastructure is a mine field and you need all the armor you can get!
