Four Reasons to Use Tong Ren Healing for Your Pet
Can Tong Ren therapy help your pet? The answer, as you will discover, is yes, it can, just as it can help people with health problems. Here are just four reasons you might consider using Tong Ren therapy:
l. Tong Ren is always available. You don't have to pack up a nervous animal and transport it to the vet.
2. Tong Ren is inexpensive.
3. Tong Ren is easy to learn.
4. Tong Ren comforts your pet-you are always in control.

Companion animals become an integral part of our lives, and this bond can sometimes be as enduring and closer than those of our human friends. For some elderly people, a pet dog or cat may be the only companionship they have for days on end. Pets comfort us and give us understanding, friendship and unconditional love. They are also great entertainers. For many people, the act of taking care of a pet is their lifeline and fulfills their need to be needed. For disabled persons, animals provide not only companionship but also needed services. Naturally, we want our pets to live their lives in comfort and health. Aside from proper nutrition, attention, play and the responsibility for socializing our pets, we must provide them with health care. In this respect, Tong Ren Therapy is a tool worth considering.
Tong Ren is a skill you can learn to help your pet. It can heal many diseases. Tong Ren may relieve your pet's anxiety about changes as well as situations, like going to the vet's or being placed in a carrier. Tong Ren may also be a comfort to a pet facing the end of their life. My hope is that the information in this lens will benefit pets and animals and their owners.
Meet Tom Tam, the Creator of the Tong Ren Healing System
What is Tong Ren and How Does it Work?

Tom Tam is a licensed acupuncturist in Massachusetts, a healer, author, poet, and an incredibly warm and caring human being. Born in Tai Shan, China, he came to the United States in 1975 as a political refugee. Since 1982, he has been practicing acupuncture, Tai Chi, and Chi Gong healing with great success. Tom began training students in acupuncture and Tui Na in the Boston area in 1984, and in the mid-1990s, Tom created the Tong Ren Healing System. His system combined Western medicine and traditional Eastern medical knowledge and practice to form a new theory for understanding and healing difficult diseases.
For the last 25 years, Tom has been one of the foremost students of Master Gin Soon Chu, the fifth generation master of traditional Yang family Tai Chi Chuan, and Tom has taught Tai Chi Chuan for more than 20 years in the greater Boston area.
In 1994, Tom took a group of students to visit mainland China and Taiwan in order to share his Tong Ren healing method. In Guang Zhou Tradition Chinese Medical College, he demonstrated Tong Ren healing for weight loss, followed by a trip to Taipei to demonstrate Tong Ren's effects on leukemia.
In 2001, the first Guinea Pig class was formed for treating cancer in Quincy, Massachusetts. Now the Guinea Pig class for healing has spread to many countries around the world.Tom continues to practice, teach students, and travel the world to share his dreams.
The classes are called Guinea Pig classes because a Chinese belief is that one should not change the name of something that is working successfully. So, after people were cured through the use of Tong Ren in 2001, the name Guinea Pig was set in stone.

Tong Ren, the healing system that Tom created, uses a Western diagnosis of a medical problem and traditional Chinese medicine based on acupuncture points, to remove what Tom describes as blockages in the body. Removal of these blockages includes acupuncture. However, the method that Tom found to be most effective is the use of an acupuncture doll and a magnetic hammer--when the Tong Ren practitioner taps on the doll at acupuncture points where the blockage has occurred, the symptoms of the individual's problems are relieved.
The book "Tom Tam's Healing System" gives the tapping points for a host of conditions and diseases including tennis elbow, stomach ulcers, sore throat, migraines, tinnitus, anxiety, yeast infection, various cancers, acne, Alzheimer's, MS, ALS, anemia, bladder problems, phobias, lung problems, lower back pain, morning sickness and many. Tom is constantly updating his therapy.
"A Lazy Bum's Healing, A Cross Reference Therapy Manual," is a good reference book to own because it is a spiral-bound large format guide which is easy to use, but it isn't necessary to own if one wants to begin practicing Tong Ren right away.

For example, to take a common problem -- sinusitis, you would consult the Tong Ren manual and would then tap on the following acupuncture points that are marked on the doll: C3, C4,T1, T2, T3, SI16, LI4, and the Ouch Point (where it hurts). C stands for Cervical and is located on the back of the neck; T stands for Thoracic and the points correspond to the spinal vertebrae. LI is large intestine and SI is small intestine -- these acupuncture points are located on the side of the face and are the Small Intestine and Large Intestine Meridians.
The length of time you would tap varies -- generally, I find 10 minutes of tapping to be effective, but a practitioner would probably tap for a longer length of time.
You can expect to experience many different sensations -- including heat, tingling, odd body sensations, feeling as though your blood is pumping through body -- or you may just feel relaxed or go to sleep. However, you may experience nothing at all during the session only to realize the effect later. Tom always assures us that the chi (Chinese for life force) is flowing.
The tapping on the Live Broadcasts are generally very short, but if you can tap for yourself or have a friend or practitioner tap for you, it is much more relaxing. You may feel a number of effects, such as pinpricks on your skin, tingiing, heat, relaxation, pulling, blood flowing more vigorously or you may feel nothing until much later.
Pets often sit in with the owners and listen to the tapping on the live Guinea Pig Broadcasts. Our cat likes to settle in under the slp-covered chair where she can't be seen.

Unfortunately, the second part of this video refuses to load, but you can paste this link to see it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuU5LqwEFmght tpIn the second part of this two-part video, Marcia Zais, who has known Tom for 25 years, discusses how she worked on healing guinea pigs ,birds, and for the California Animal Welfare League on bears, elephants, alligators, tigers, and iguanas in animal sanctuaries. At that time, she used chi gong for healing animals, and remarked that she wished she had known about Tong Ren at that time.

This certainly is true with our cats who will gather for a round of tapping. Of our three cats, Mary is the most susceptible to Tong Ren therapy, especially when tapping the doll at the point between the eyes.
Yes, although there are cat, dog and horse dolls, you can use the human acupuncture doll to tap for animals.
The bracelet between the two cats is one that Joseph on the left likes to play fetch with. He is a great admirer of Sid, the black and white cat; however, although, Joseph has offered it to him, Sid has neither the knowledge nor interest in the game of fetch. And Joseph doesn't seem to realize that fetch requires human hands to toss the bracelet.

"Perhaps as more people practice Tong Ren, eventually Tong Ren will be practiced in the whole world. Hypnotic suggestion and guided meditation are practiced in the Western world. Tong Ren Therapy is beyond the power of suggestion since we can produce healing effects on babies and animals. This means that Tong Ren Therapy does not need the use of language to influence the patient. It is a transfer of Chi, healing and knowledge without any guided thought or the use of the power of suggestion. If a group of Tong Ren therapists perform Tong Ren Therapy, they can gather more Chi to affect another group of Tong Ren therapists. In this way the healing power of the whole group of Tong Ren therapists keeps growing."
"Scientific studies have shown that one brainwave can affect others. This is called brainwave entrainment or brain frequency entrainment. In nature, birds, fishes and all animals have the capacity for brainwave entrainment. When a group of birds are flying, all the birds follow the leader. When we look at a school of fish swimming, all the fish follow a leader too...Their guiding signal is the brainwave. Brainwave entrainment triggers a frequency following response. According to scientific studies, a mother's brainwave entrainment can alter a baby's heartbeat and brainwave...."

Tong Ren Guinea Pig Class Broadcasts -- Human and Animal
Even though there is only one live broadcast for animals on Thursday, I believe that cats, dogs and birds will respond to those for humans since I have observed our cats listening to Tong Ren broadcasts and drifting off to sleep (or not!- as cat owners know, cats sometime appear to be sleeping but are just relaxing!).

Sometimes the feed doesn't work properly, but Tom Tam and many others still believe we are receiving the chi or qi -- life force. I may have mentioned before that they are called guinea pig classes because the Chinese believe that you shouldn't change the name of something that is successful -- Tom had the first successful healing using this method in 2001 with a lady who had cancer.

Do Animals Think?
And About What?

I've often wondered what animals think and, since the only mammalian pets I've owned were cats, I think I can identify several feline states of mind.
These emotions are fear, anxiety, curiosity and contentment. For example, at this moment, Mary and Joseph are quite contented. (They were named by my daughter-in-law who got them from a shelter just before Christmas.) As usual, they are relaxing atop some papers on the bed because, as you may know, cats always lie or sit on things that you are using or need to move, one of their favorites being freshly laundered clothing. Observing them now, Mary, who is ever-vigilant and intensely interested in food, is watching a beetle on the outside screen. Now, both cats have s closed their eyes and appear to be asleep, but the position of their ears and bodies tell me they are not truly asleep.
Occasionally, the sound of a passing car will cause a little twinge of the ear, a flick of the tail. However, they aren't really concerned about the cars because they know that Joey is in the house. If he were out, they would be listening for the sound of that particular vehicle, and when it pulled up, both cats would dash downstairs and stand by the door.

I think animals are aware of many things and of death especially since research has shown that plants can evince a whole range of knowing and emotions. Two books on this subject are "Primary Perception: Biocommunication with Plants, Living Foods, and Human Cells" by Cleve Beckster and "The Secret Life of Plants by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird. If plants react to pleasing music and die from heavy metal and can discern harmful intentions and react with fear, than animals must possess these same qualities. However, I can't find the same kind of research that I've read about plants (except for elephants and dolphins), and I'd like hear from readers.
Temple Grandin has done research on animals and posits an interesting relationship between autistic thinking and animal thinking. In the following section, there is a link to an article about her theories.
What Animals Fear
- "What Do Animals Think?," by Verlyn Klinkenborg, in May 2005 "Discover"
- The author meets with Temple Grandin, author of "Animals in Translation: Using the Mysteries of Autism to Decode Animal Behavior." Grandin, who is autistic, is noted for her redesign of slaughterhouses which revolutionized the industry to make it less stressful for animals.
Klinkenborg writes, " Grandin defines what works when it comes to handling cattle in feedlots and slaughterhouses because she defines it from the cow's point of view. Because of her autism, she's able to see what cattle see and humans don't. She understands, for instance, that even a tiny thing, like a harsh lighting contrast, will startle cattle, stopping them in their tracks. She knows that fear is a landmark emotion for a cow, just as it is for an autistic person. 'You can't get anything past a cow,' she writes. She knows this partly because you can't get anything past an autistic person either."
Grandin asserts, "Autistic people are closer to animals than normal people are." - Oprah Community
- These are posts on the subject of whether dogs fear death which were raised by an Eckhart Tolle statement that dogs do not fear death. The comments are well-written and thoughtful.
- Bach Flower Remedies for Pets
- "The Bach Flower Remedies® are able to help our Animals when they have negative emotions just as they help us when we are emotionally out of balance. Unfortunately, we are not able to ask our pet why it acts depressed, but we do know if it misses a friend or gets overly excited around new people." This quote is from the website. These remedies do not contain alcohol. They also caution "Please do not use Rescue Pastilles on Dogs due to the sweetener Xylitol."
I think Bach Flower Remedies are useful for helping to smooth out an animals reactions to every day life -- the only one I've ever used on plants and animals is Rescue Remedy and Star of Bethlehem (for shock).

Pet Health
Pets I've Loved and Lost
Picture: Joseph takes an interest in alternative healing.
My first pet was a turtle, and although I never gave him a name, I spent hours watching him clamber over rocks in the goldfish bowl.
There followed a succession of other pets including Easter chicks, goldfish, cats, a puppy, ducks as well as the baby pigs my cousins and I were given on the farm to nurture for a brief span of time. Many of these little ones met tragic ends. But the cats were the ones that I loved the most, especially Mouschi, a beautiful Maine coon cat (named after Anne Frank's cat).
Much later, there was Freddy, my beloved, affectionate, marmalade-colored Manx whom we gave away when my first husband became allergic to cats. We both cried as he put Freddie in his cat carrier and took him to the shelter--I hope Freddie found the people he deserved. While in Nigeria with the Peace Corps, I rescued Pooh, a feral kitten. Several times each day, Pooh dashed across the room and flung himself on the mesh of the screened porch, hanging there like the lizards that covered the outside of my flat on Awolowo Road.

About Pillimore, a Burmese cat--my son Joey found the name in a children's book and named him Pillimore but called him Sally. Sally Pillimore did not like moving from Capitol Hill to the suburbs of Silver Spring, Maryland, and so, like many cats are wont to do, she moved house. At first, across the street, but where her travels took her from there, we never knew.
I guess the final cat in my life was Felix, who was surely psychic. (My son named her after a Felix the Cat plush toy and plush toys have no gender!) She was born in a drain sewer at the end of our block. One day after school when my son Archer was in first grade, we saw a wee kitten making its way up the steep slope on toddler kitty legs. And we --my son, Aunt Lil, and I -- who were standing on the grass, watched in fascination as the determined ball of fur hoisted itself up the steps and stood waiting for someone to open the door. Naturally, we did. My son had been yearning for a cat. The next day, Montgomery County animal control arrived and removed the mother cat and Felix's siblings -- somehow Felix knew this was to happen and made her escape.

glitter-graphics.com
Felix, the only cat who ever communicated with me, died in September 2003. Now, there are animal communicators who can tune into animals, but I'm not one of them. Felix was dreadfully afraid of lightning and she never sat on anyone else's lap but mine; however during a storm, she would always run to Archer's room and glue herself to his leg. I'm still sorry that she suffered and that I had to leave her.

There's one personal story about animal communication I'd like to share. There is a dowser in California I call whenever I am having a difficult problem, This man has the ability to energetically clear houses and people. Once when I called him and asked for his help, he said after a few minutes, "Wait a minute, there's a baby bird here that needs some help." I was so amazed because my son had found two baby starlings that had fallen from the nest the previous week. He took them home and using information culled from internet sites, attempted to keep them alive.
Adan died, but Jacob who had always been the stronger one, appeared to be thriving. He learned to perch on Joey's shoulder when going for a walk, follow him with his eyes and, when placed on the ground, huddle near his feet. I was away from Washington, and unbeknownst to me, Jacob had died the previous evening. Yet here was a tiny creature making the presence of its spirit felt to a dowser 2000 miles away! It was a powerful demonstration to me of how we really are connected to all of creation. It also recalled to mind the Biblical verse in Luke, "Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father."
