An Outstanding Bass Player

Tony Levin is a musician from the United States best know for his work with British progressive rock artists Peter Gabriel and King Crimson, but he's also worked with a virtual who's who in popular music. Levin has played on albums by such diverse legends as Cher, Judy Collins, Alice Cooper, David Bowie, John Lennon, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon and Yes.

He has been credited with popularizing the musical instrument known as the Chapman Stick, which is basically a fretboard with 8, 10 or 12 strings which is played using a free hand tapping method with fingers from both hands tapping the frets rather than one hand fretting while the other plucks as done with typical guitar playing.

Levin began using the Chapman Stick while with Peter Gabriel in the late 1970's, then went from just using the instrument for the bass parts to playing both bass and melody with King Crimson in the early '80s.

I first noticed Levin in Peter Gabriel's concert film, Secret World Live (the double CD remains one of my prized possessions, and stays in constant rotation on my MP3 player), but it wasn't until I started to learn more about King Crimson (thanks to Cirkus: The Young Person's Guide to King Crimson - Live, another prized CD which isn't as old, but is also in constant rotation on my MP3 player) that I began to appreciate Tony Levin's talent, and his incredible contributions to the world of music.

Tony Levin's Early Career

Originally from Massachusetts, Tony Levin started his music career with the upright bass when he was ten, and played tuba with his high school band as a teen. He performed for John and Jackie Kennedy at the White House as part of the Greater Boston Symphony Youth Orchestra in 1962.

He attended Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY and played in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, before moving to New York City in 1970 where he became a popular session musician playing bass on albums by some of the biggest names in music. Including Burt Bacharach, Judy Collins, Art Garfunkel, Chuck Mangione, Don McLean, Peter, Paul & Mary, Buddy Rich, Ringo Starr, and Carly Simon.

In the '80s he appeared on albums by artists such as Laurie Anderson, Joan Armatrading, Karen Carpenter, Cher, Marshall Crenshaw, Dire Straits, Brian Ferry, Peter Frampton, John Lennon/Ono Yoko, Stevie Nicks, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, Rick Springfield, James Taylor, and Warren Zevon.

See Tony Levin's Discography for the complete list.

Peter Gabriel (1st Solo Album)

Working with producer Bob Ezrin on Lou Reed's Berlin in 1973 and Alice Cooper's Welcome to My Nightmare led to working with Ezrin on the first Peter Gabriel solo album, often referred to as "Car," in 1976.

Tony met Peter Gabriel, the former lead singer of Genesis, guitarist/King Crimson founder, Robert Fripp, and electronic music pioneer Larry Fast of Synergy on the same day, and has continued to work with all of them ever since.

Fripp had broken up Crimson and took a short break from the music business. Working on Gabriel's first solo album was Fripp's return to the music business, but he stayed in the background being credited as "Dusty Rhodes."

Sacred Songs

Darryl Hall

Levin and Fripp worked together on Daryl Hall's Sacred Songs and Gabriel's second solo album in 1977 and 78 while putting together Fripp's Exposure, which was released in 1979. RCA originally refused to release Sacred Songs believing that it wasn't commercial enough, and would alienate Hall's fans.

Fripp and Hall were not happy with the record company's decision to shelve Sacred Songs and fueled popular demand for its release by handing out tapes of the album to music journalists and disc jockeys. A letter campaign by fans along with interest from within the music profession finally persuaded RCA to release it in 1980.

Peter Gabriel (2nd Solo Album)

aka "Scatches"

Produced by Robert Fripp, this album was to originally be part of a trilogy with Hall's Sacred Songs and Fripp's own album, Exposure. It didn't sell as well as Gabriel's first album, but it did better than the other two albums in Fripp's "trilogy" partly due to the delay in the release of Sacred Songs.

Exposure

Robert Fripp

Originally part of Fripp's trilogy of albums with Daryl Hall's Sacred Songs and Peter Gabriel's second solo album, Exposure has contributions by many different artists besides Hall, Gabriel and Levin, it included Brian Eno (Roxy Music), Peter Hammill (Van der Graaf Generator), Terre Roche (The Roches), Barry Andrews(XTC) Phil Collins (Genesis), Narada Michael Walden (The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jerry Marotta (Orleans) and Sid McGinnis (a member of Gabriel's band at this point, he would later become famous on David Letterman's show as a member of The World's Most Dangerous Band and the CBS Orchestra).

Pressure from RCA and Hall's management forced Fripp to replace most of Hall's vocals on the Exposure album, and plans that Fripp and Hall had for forming a band with Levin and Peter Gabriel's drummer, Jerry Marotta, who was also the drummer for Hall & Oats from 1979 - 81.

Peter Gabriel (3rd Solo Album)

aka "Melt"

Gabriel's 3rd solo release was untitled, like his previous two solo albums and was considered extremely experimental. Atlantic Records, which had handled the US releases of Gabriel's previous four albums, including the last two he did as the lead singer of Genesis, didn't just decided to not release it, but to drop him altogether.

The album was released on Mercury Records in the US and reached number 22 on the US album charts, and the single, "Games Without Frontiers" reached number 48 on Billboard's pop singles chart. In the UK, the album went to number 1, and was certified Gold.

John Kalodner, the executive who had decided the album won't be commercial enough for Atlantic Records, realized his mistake after it was released, and signed Gabriel on as one of the first artists at the new company he was working for, Geffen Records.

Rolling Stone magazine included it on their list of the top 100 albums of the 1980's as number 45, and Q magazine listed it as number 53 of the Greatest British albums ever.

Double Fantasy

John Lennon, Yoko Ono

In 1980, Tony Levin was called in to help record what was supposed to be John Lennon's comeback album, after a long absence from the music business. Sadly, it proved to be Lennon's last studio work as he was murdered on the 8th of December, just weeks after its release.

Discipline

Robert Fripp's new band, Discipline, was formed when he and Bill Bruford got back together, Bruford had been Crimson's drummer from 1972 until Fripp disbanded it in '74.

Bruford and Crimson's bassist/lead singer from that period, John Wetton, had tried to get Fripp to reform the group in 1977. When that failed, Bruford and Wetton formed the band U.K. instead.

Fripp added guitarist Adrian Belew, who also became the lead singer and lyricist for the new band. Levin wasn't the first choice for bassist, but he would have been, if Fripp had known he was available from the start.

The new band did perform as Discipline for a few months, but by October of 1981 they renamed themselves King Crimson, keeping the name Discipline for the title of their first album.

The Celtic knot used for the album's cover art is the perfect symbol of the intricate weaving of the group's new musical style.

Beat

King Crimson

King Crimson's 1982 album was inspired by the the twenty-fifth anniversary of writer Jack Kerouac's novel, On the Road, which is often considered of of the most defining works of the post World War II Beat Generation.

References to Kerouac include the song "Neal and Jack and Me" which refers to Jack Kerouac and his friend, Neal Cassady. "Neurotica" was named for the title of the Beat-era magazine, Neurotica.

Live in Bath 1981

Volume 2 of The Collectable King Crimson has two concerts recorded in the early '80s. Disc 1 is an audience recording of the band from a concert in Bath England when the band was still being called Discipline. The sound quality is about as good as a bootleg tape can get, The second disc is from a show in '82, after they had changed their name, and is taken from the bands soundboard, so the quality is much better than the first disc.

Road Photos

By Tony Levin

Around the time King Crimson broke up, Levin released a book of black and white photos called Road Photos which are photos Tony took while on tour with King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon and others. The photos were taken backstage and from Levin's on-stage prospective of his fellow band mates, and the audiences during shows.

Tony has a new photo book out called "CRIMSON Chronicles vol. 1 the 1980's" which includes some of the pictures in the original, plus a lot more. The best place to find it is at Papa Bear.

So

Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel's 1986 album, So, is perhaps his most successful. It went to number 1 in the UK where it was certified 3x Platinum, and number 2 in the US where it received a 5x Platinum certification.

It was the first of Gabriel's albums to be intended to have a title other than "Peter Gabriel," but according to Gabriel, the title has no real meaning, he just liked the form of the word with two letters.

While working on the song "Big Time," Jerry Marotta drummed on the bass strings while Tony fingered the frets. Tony attempted to recreate the sound for the live performances using one drum stick.

Gabriel suggested that he attach the sticks to his fingers, and Tony's guitar tech at the time, Andy Moore, actually designed the first set of what would become Funk Fingers.

At first they were called Freddie Fingers (think "Freddie Krueger") or Fu Fingers because they reminded people of Fu Manchu's long fingernails.

They didn't work perfectly from the start. At first they were too heavy, and could break the strings. Sometimes they were attached so tightly, his fingers would turn purple, other times they were so loose, they would fly off into the audience.

The songs, "Big Time," "In Your Eyes," "Red Rain," "Sledgehammer," and "Don't Give Up" all charted on the UK and US charts, "That Voice Again" charted in the US.

The video for "Sledgehammer" won nine MTV Video Music Awards in 1987, a record which still stands as of 2008. It ranked at number four on MTV's 100 Greatest Music Videos Ever Made (1999). It is the most played music video in the history of MTV. It is also MTV's number one animated video of all time.

B'Boom: Official Bootleg - Live In Argentina 1994

King Crimson

When the newly reformed King Crimson toured Argentina in 1994, the hadn't planned on releasing a live album, but when a poor sounding bootleg of the tour began to circulate, it was decided that an official version with high quality tracks recorded directly from their soundboard was needed. This gave fans what they wanted, while pushing the high priced bootlegs out of the market.

THRaKaTTaK

King Crimson

The Double Trio's live set list in 1995 had little variation night after night, except when it came to the title track of the Thrak album. During the performance of that song, the band would break out into an unpredictable experimental musical improvisation. The result is THRaKaTTaK which is material recorded during various shows from the one song, "Thrak" from the band's tour of Japan and the US.

Black Light Syndrome

Bozzio Levin Stevens

What started as an idea with Terry Bozzio and Peter Morticelli of Magna Carta Records turned into Bozzio Levin Stevens and their first album, Black Light Syndrome .

Terry Bozzio has been well known on the progressive rock scene since his days as Frank Zappa's drummer. Guitarist Steve Stevens isn't quite as well know, but has worked with some very famous artists including Billy Idol, Michael Jackson, and Vince Neil. Levin was the first choice for a bass player, but no one actually thought he would be able to fit it into his busy schedule.

None of them had ever worked together prior to the first day in the studio, but managed to make a very well received improvisational progressive rock album in only four days in 1997.

From the Caves of the Iron Mountain

Gorn Levin Marotta

Levin and drummer Jerry Marotta hadn't worked together much since 1986, but Levin decided they should get together and do something since they were living near each other. Tony knew that Steve Gorn, who plays various reed and East Indian flute instruments, also lived near by, so he invited him to join them.

The result is the CD From the Caves of the Iron Mountain and corresponding video, Tales from Widow Jane Mine, recorded in 1997 at the Widow Jane Mine, an abandoned limestone mine that has become a performance and function space for area residents in Rosendale, NY.

Liquid Tension Experiment

Liquid Tension Experiment (LTE)

When Dream Theater's drummer, Mike Portnoy was asked to form a supergroup by Magna Carta Records in 1997, he asked Tony Levin and keyboardist Jordan Rudess of the Dixie Dregs to join him. He had wanted the guitarist to be Dimebag Darrell of Pantera, but when he wasn't available he tried Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, Kansas, Deep Purple) then Jim Matheos (Fates Warning) before settling on his Dream Theater band mate, John Petrucci.

The song "Three Minute Warning" came about during the recording sessions when Levin wanted to improvise as opposed to Petrucci and Portnoy who wanted to carefully write songs. Levin eventually told the others that if they didn't start to jam in three minutes, he'd just go home. The song "Three Minute Warning" is the recording of what followed.

On the CD's back cover it says: "CAUTION: "Three Minute Warning" is not for the musically faint-hearted, impatient, or critics of extreme self-indulgence. If you fall into any of the above categories, please hit the stop button on your CD player after track # 8."

Spontaneous Combustion

Liquid Trio Experiment

Liquid Tension Experiment became Liquid Trio Experiment when guitarist John Petrucci was called away to be his wife when she went into premature labor. The trio of Mike Portnoy, Tony Levin and Jordan Rudess, who still had studio time booked for the recording of the second Liquid Tension Experiment album, continued to write music during this period.

A compilation of jams from those sessions became the album, Spontaneous Combustion.

Resonator

Tony Levin

2006's Resonator features a more rock-orientated sound than Levin's earlier solo work. It also has lead vocals on most of the tracks, something also not on his previous solo albums.

Besides having new lyrics, a reworked version of "Utopia," which was originally an instrumental on Waters of Eden, also features a guitar solo by Toto's Steve Lukather.

Adrian Belew's guest appearance on "Throw The God A Bone" marked the first time he and Levin had worked together in the studio since King Crimson's THRAK in 1995.

Stick Man

Tony Levin

''Stick Man is a step in a new direction for me. Or perhaps in an old direction, because, from what listeners are telling me, it's come out quite Crimson-like. That could be because of the great participation by Pat Mastelotto on drums and percussion - also I was aiming at more raw, playing-oriented tracks. Backing off from the composition based writing I'd done recently, I've tried to feature not only both sides of the Stick, but some unusual bass techniques and sounds. There are a lot of tracks, (17) and it's mostly instrumental (especially if you consider my shouting not to be a song!)" --Tony Levin

"We all had a great time listening to your CD, Stick Man . . . I hear elements of "Elephant Talk" taken to an even greater intensity. Actually, I liked every song because they fit together to somehow define a new approach to instrumental composition, from fresh sounding effects to seemingly novel recording routines. For Stick enthusiasts, this will definitely be a new game in town - new harmonic progressions, rhythms, sonics and attitude. Of course The Stick dominates the album and is multifaceted in all registers and through all manner of effects. You gave the instrument a real workout and I know it will be of great interest to Stick players, even to the point of influencing some of their future recording efforts." --Emmett Chapman-Inventor of Chapman Stick

The best known bold head in the business
Tony 2003 / 2004

Tony Levin is a musician for musicians. that's how many people call him. To get it straight, within the average music interested audiance, the name is known, but not many people know, in which draw to put it in. Only when he gets introduced by
Peter Gabriel live on stage, then some of us get the clue, and Tony gets the well deserved applause almost as enthusiastically as the one for the mastro.

Within insider- and musician circles the bold headed bassist is already a superstar for himself, a miracle on 4 strings and a brilliant genius. Specialists even call him the very best bass player of present days. His bold head has advanced to an individual brand and it is known, that only Tony can play the famous Chapman Stick a 100%. Known for all those countless session work and Live concerts with other famous artists, he still follows his own path with a solo carriere, nicely flowing beside all his other jobs.
www.stick.com - Interviews
There is a photo of Tony Levin on the back of his book Beyond The Bass Clef. It's a black and white portrait, he's wearing a black leather jacket, his arms are folded in front of him cradling a black headless, fretless bass. All you can see, all that stands out against the black is his head, his hands and the strings on the bass. Everything else hides in shadow.

Where words fail to describe Levin's sound or his style or the niche he as carved for himself as one of the most in demand bass players of all time, this photo serves to define Tony as a musician and the role he has crafted for himself in the music industry.

THE STICK CENTER official web site: TONY LEVIN
Tony Levin has been (and it is) for many bassists and stickists, an inevitable reference. Possibly, his charisma like musician is leaned on the way he sees and lives his own music. This musical " energy " that comes off of him is, to my way of seeing, so permeable towards out, that arrives to the audience in a simple and direct way. If you have had the luck to see this musician in action (I had it, in the first concert that King Crimson offered in Buenos Aires in its return), you find Levin absolutely concentrated in his task, precise and sure in its action.

We are pleased as Swedish punch to announce that none other than Stick Men will join Isildurs Bane for IB Expo 09. Digital Interviews: Tony Levin
Tony Levin is perhaps best known for his long tenure as bassist for King Crimson. He has also been involved in "ProjeKcts" -- stripped-down fractal units of Crimson's full lineup. Levin's resume ranges from the eclectic Bruford Levin Upper Extremities and Bozzio-Levin-Stevens collaborations, to sessions with Dire Straits, Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, Buddy Rich and Carly Simon. He has also worked as Peter Gabriel's bassist since 1977.
