Tools for Writers

I've found (and created) some cool tools for writers.  In this lens, I'll be reviewing cool freebies, open source, and low cost tools for writers.

Have a cool tool that should be reviewed by me?  Click the "Contact Me" link at the right.

While my vein is freelance / nonfiction, there's likely something here for fiction writers as well.

Update!!!!!!!!!!  I am now the Editor of the Business Coach site of BellaOnline, the 2nd largest site for women.  I found it through their Writing site.  They do have a few more openings for volunteers.  Visit the site, or contact me, for details.

*Note* This Lens is still in production.  Feel free to read it and get a feel for what will be offered here.  Also, contact me & view my other lenses & sites, in the meantime.

Ok, back to Cool Tools & Tips for Writers.

Caveat Emptor = Buyer (or Writer) Beware.

I've reviewed some, (Not yet All) of what's out there. Two of the most advertised sites for "getting published" online are Helium & Associated Content.

There are a lot of scams out there, targeting you & your work. Be very careful who you write for, what their copyright is over your work, and how you're compensated.

Of the two, I decided to not write for Helium, yet to write for Associated Content. I'll have to re-read the terms of agreement, and let you know why *I* chose this route.

You, obviously, can choose for yourself, but wherever you display your content, make sure you're okay with what happens to the copyright. (As in, who owns the piece, once you submit?)

Helium pays a portion of advertising revenue to you, based on visits & clickthroughs of the Adsense Ads on your article. Ah, yes. After re-reading the terms of agreement, I'm reminded why I didn't post articles there. They have the right to sell, distribute, change, make derivatives of your work, with or without attribution (saying you wrote it.) I believe YOU, however, are not allowed to do this with work you submit to the site, even though you own the copyright. That said, I could be wrong.

On a THIRD read-through, of Helium's Terms, I may have been incorrect. (It happens, particularly with legaleeze.) Read Helium's Terms for yourself and see what you think. Would that agreement be alright with you? I'll provide a link, just in case you want to join.

I also read the Terms & IC Agreement, on AC; there are similar terms of perpetual rights, but I didn't find any clause that says they can take away attribution.

I plan to check out a few things you've posted here. Thanks!

A word about Helium: I write on Helium and enjoy the experience. I get much feedback on articles I submit and it's exciting to check back day to day to see what earnings I've made. I've won something from most of the contests I've submitted to and it's a great place to share your thoughts and points of view on various subjects.

Helium does give you a "leapfrog" option as well in which you can make submissions to change your articles. The article ranked as the highest will replace the original. Even if your revised article is ranked as being the same it will replace the initial article because you, as the author, feel it's better. The only way your revised article will be rejected is if others deem your original article to be better.

Nice looking lens!

One note about Associated Content: it's currently limited to US citizens, based on what I saw today. That's one reason why I got started with Helium. Helium isn't perfect but I think it's a good starting point for people who are trying to get the hand of writing articles.
