Argh!! The struggle to fit a fat toothbrush into a small hole ...
Toothbrushes, they are a changing. Toothbrush holders, not so much.
Handles have gotten fatter in an attempt to make it easier, more ergonomic, more stylish, more expensive to get our teeth clean. And that's just with manual toothbrushes! But while the toothbrush has gotten more stylish (and colorful!), holders that can handle the handle are tough to find.
I just completed a remodel of my own bathroom and have been on the hunt for a new toothbrush holder that will match my chrome fixtures and hold my fat toothbrush as well as my rather slender flosser. Check out some of the great ones I found below!!
Criteria for Selection
1. Hold 2-4 items
2. Fit a fat toothbrush
3. Hold onto slim items
4. Be open to the air at the bottom (preferably no collection area, but at least open)
5. Be stylish! This means no cheesy themed holders!!
Shouldn't be too hard to find that, should it? Should it? I actually wasn't sure I'd get to 10!! The biggest challenge was finding ones that were open at the bottom, which surprised me. Second challenge was fitting the toothbrush, third the size of the holes.
Let's see what I found ...
What I Have Now ...
Brushed-Chrome Toothbrush Holder
Amazon Price: $12.99 (as of 10/07/2008)
Who's to Blame?
So, in the last 20 years, toothbrush design has become the big thing and suddenly we have oodles of $6 manual toothbrushes with fat handles that don't fit in toothbrush holders. Should the toothbrush people have been working with the size of the holes or should the holder people have been keeping up with the changes in toothbrush design?
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byRedesign the holder!

Forma Suction Toothbrush Holder - Stainless Steel by InterDesign
Uses a suction cup but hides it beautifully. And it takes care of fat and slim items by grabbing them at the top. But will it stick to a textured wall or only to tile? Hmmm.
Size: 2"tall x 2 1/4"wide
$3.99 at Organize.com

Stainless Steel Suction Multi Toothbrush Holder
Really don't like the suction cup thing, but this model is meant for the shower rather than sink. But the clips are pretty sweet looking.
$5.99 at Organize.com

Vola T11-16 - VOLA TOOTHBRUSH HOLDER
Not sure about this one - brushes look a little close together for me. But it meets all the other criteria!
$123.75 at eFaucets.com
Allied Brass Prestige Skyline Satin Chrome Tumbler/Toothbrush Holder
Amazon Price: (as of 10/07/2008)
This one scores good style points, but I'm a little concerned about the holes. Hard to tell if they're big enough. But hey, free shipping and easy returns, so it might be worth trying!
Decent Runner-Up
Delta 75056-RB Victorian Wall-Mounted Toothbrush Holder/Tumbler, Venetian Bronze
Amazon Price: $23.19 (as of 10/07/2008)
Has potential, although it is a wall mount, so might be best used if you're doing a remodel. And haven't finished already like me. :-)

York Toothbrush Stand - Round - White Ceramic & Chrome by InterDesign
This guy is nice and simple, but I'm not a fan of the ceramic base. Would prefer all metal.
Size: 4"tall x 2 3/4"diameter
$6.99 from Organize.com

York Toothbrush Stand - White Ceramic & Chrome by InterDesign
Again with the ceramic base. But this one wins points for being in a straight line. I much prefer that to the circle where your brush might touch someone else's.
Size: 4 3/4"tall x 5 3/4"wide

Classic Brushed Metal Toothbrush Holder
Amazon Price: $9.99 (as of 10/07/2008)
Just need it in chrome and I'm golden!
Umbra Rain Toothbrush Holder, Glazed Pewter
Amazon Price: $12.17 (as of 10/07/2008)
Big holes, nice open design. But it only comes in bronze and pewter, so no go for me. But it might work in your bathroom. It's quite lovely and a great price!
Tooth Brush & Cup Holder
Amazon Price: (as of 10/07/2008)
The holes in this guy look big enough. But it wins some serious style points from me. Right color and everything ...

This was by far my favorite of all the holders I found that met my criteria. It's stylish, functional and not outrageously expensive. (Hey, I found some that were more than $100!) Do I get it or go with something round to match the curves of my faucets?
