Tooth Fairy Lore, Kids Dental Health, Caring for Baby Teeth

The Tooth Fairy is a wonderful night stealth creature who leaves little gifts and even money for children in exchange for their lost baby teeth. Tooth fairy legends abound in many different cultures, each with its own special tooth fairy customs and gifts to leave behind when they take a lost baby tooth to Tooth Fairy Land.

For parents, the arrival and loss of a child's first tooth are important milestones. A baby's first tooth usually arrives at about 6 months. Kids lose their first baby tooth between the ages of 5 and 7. Then it's time for the Tooth Fairy to start visiting.

Most kids are a bit anxious about losing their first baby tooth, but after they know what it's like and that it really does not hurt to lose a baby tooth that's ready to come out. The rewards left in exchange by the Tooth Fairy also help kids to enjoy playing with wiggly teeth and pulling them when they're ready to come out.

This Lens is Dedicated to Charity - MyTwoFrontTeeth.org

All earnings from this lens benefit MyTwoFrontTeeth.org - they enable dozens of charities, daycares, and preschools to accept toy sponsorships online, thereby helping to brighten the holidays for thousands of underprivileged children. I knocked out my two front teeth before I was 3 years old - in different childhood acts of rambunctious behavior. My parents were able to provide tooth fairy gifts and orthodontic work, and for that I am grateful. This charity is close to my heart because of its name and because it helps bring holiday happiness to kids in need.

Beyond the Tooth Fairy

Tooth loss customs and stories from around the world

The tooth fairy isn't the only one collecting kids teeth when they fall out.

The world is full of other, equally fascinating myths and traditions about what happens to children's teeth when they come out. If you come from Chile or Costa Rica, your parents will have the tooth made into a charm. If you're Venezuelan, you put the tooth under your pillow and hope that a mouse brings you money. Lots more, many pictures. Ages 4-8.

All I Want for Christmas is My 2 Front Teeth

We all go through the toothless stage ... some earlier than others

Baby teeth start to fall out around age 6 or 7. By the time kids reach the age of 12 or 13, most have lost their last baby tooth, replaced by a mouth full of permanent teeth. Many youngsters need to wear braces to realign crooked teeth or make room for the final adult molars.

I managed to lose my first tooth very early. I was a very active child; I lost two of my front baby teeth in separate play accidents before I was 3 years old. I don't recall whether the tooth fairy left me a gift for those early lost baby teeth, but I do know that the missing teeth didn't prevent me from chomping the ears off chocolate rabbits at Easter time, not one bit.

For quite a few years my answer to the question, "What Do You Want for Christmas?" was yes, you guessed it - "My 2 Front Teeth". Not long after those 2 permanent front teeth finally arrived, I was regretting my wish - I had to wear braces for a couple years to correct a distinctly horsey overbite.

This lens donates to My Two Front Teeth in memory of my tooth loss escapades and my unending love of the Tooth Fairy Legend.

Got a tooth fairy story to share?

Do you have a favorite story about losing baby teeth? I'm happy to say I did finally get all my permanent teeth. For some weird reason, I only ever developed 2 wisdom teeth. And I still have 1 of them!

Ah, I too believed in the tooth fairy for quite some time and used to leave my bloody teeth underneath my pillow. Usually was awarded with $0.25. How sweet that the charity is My Two Front Teeth ... very neat. Awesome job! Blessings my dear.

Totally cute idea for a lens! The tooth fairy always sprinkles a little fairy dust on the pillow when she visits our house... just to let us know she's real. :)
