Who Will Be Number One?

These are the top 10 animated children's movies of all time. OK, so I have more than ten! I added a couple honorable mention movies to the top 10 list. These are animated movies that did not make the top 10, but are still great children's movies.

These are the top movies after looking at: box office draw, movie reviews, ratings, and opinion. (Hey, my opinion counts too since it is my lens!) My top ten children's animated movies may not agree with your top ten.

Let me know what your favorite children's animated movie is in the comment section below. If I think it was overlooked, I may add it to the list of honorable mentions.

Am going to list the movies in order from 10, and countdown to number one. The honorable mentions are at the bottom of the page. Don't cheat and start at the bottom first!

There are also links, and resources included with each movie, so you can find out more detail on the movies you love. Or add them to your collection if you see a movie you can't live without.

# 10 The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid (Two-Disc Special Edition)

Number 10 on the top animated children's movies list is The Little Mermaid.

The Little Mermaid was released in 1989, by Walt Disney Studios. The movie won 2 Oscars, and grossed over 222 million worldwide. The movie features the voice of Jodi Benson as Ariel, Christopher Daniel Barnes as Prince Eric, Rene Auberjonois as Louis, and Patt Carroll as Ursula.

The Little Mermaid is the story of Ariel, a young mermaid who dreams of going to land to meet a handsome sailor she's fallen in love with. She makes a deal with Ursula, an evil sea witch, which may unite her with her true love. But if Ursula has anything to do with it, she will use the deal to destroy both Ariel, and her father King Triton.

Little girls fall in love with the Little Mermaid, making this movie a timeless classic.

#9 Animated Children's Movie: Cars

Cars (Widescreen Edition)

Number 9 on the list of top animated children's movies is Cars.

Cars was the top animated movie of 2006, grossing over 454 million at the box office worldwide, and over 244 million in the US. Cars is a Pixar Animation/ Disney Studios film. It features the voices of Owen Wilson as Lightning McQueen, Paul Newman as Doc Hudson, Bonnie Hunt as Sally Carrera, and Larry the Cable Guy as Mater.
Number 9 on the list of top animated children's movies is Cars.

Rookie race car Lightning McQueen gets lost on his way to California for a big race. He ends up in washed up Radiator Springs, and tears up the town trying to flee the local law enforcement. The town mayor decides not to let him leave until he repairs the damage to the main road. Along the way Lightning learns some important life lessons about friendship. Will he make it to the big race in time? Will he remember the lessons he learned in Radiator Springs? (Rated G)

This is a truly great film for all ages, love, adventure, and a great message about friendship.

#8 Children's Animated Movie: Toy Story & Toy Story 2

OK, you got me there's two movies here. I couldn't include one without the other, and I didn't want to take up the whole top 10 with sequels.

Toy Story (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Sharing the number 8 spot on the list of top children's animated movies are the Toy Story movies.

Toy Story was released in 1995, by Walt Disney Studios, and Pixar Animation, and was nominated for two Oscars. The movie grossed over 358 million dollars worldwide, and over 191 million in US box offices. The movie features the voices of Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Tom Hanks as Woody.

Woody feels threatened as top toy when his owner Andy gets a new Buzz Lightyear for his birthday. When Buzz accidently falls out the window right before the family is ready to move, everyone blames Woody. Woody goes in search of Buzz. They both wind up at the home of Sid the toy destroyer. Will they make it home in time for the big move?

Toy Story 2 (Two-Disc Special Edition)

In this action packed sequel Woody is stolen by a toy collector, and is about to be shipped to Japan. Where he will live in a museum. This time it is Buzz, and the others to the rescue. Check out the trouble they get into trying to rescue Woody, and get back home before Andy returns from Cowboy camp.

Toy Story II, was released in 1999, and grossed over 485 million at the box office worldwide. The box office gross, and great fan ratings keep this film firmly rooted in the top animated children's movies list. It is another collaboration between Disney and Pixar Animation. Tom Hanks is back as Woody, and Tim Allen is again the voice of Buzz Lightyear.

#6 Children's Animated Movie: Monsters Inc.

Monsters, Inc. (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

Number 6 on the list of top children's animated movies is Monsters Inc.

Monsters Inc., was a monster smash for Disney Studios, and Pixar Animation, grossing almost 529 million worldwide, and over 255 million in the US. The film won an Oscar for Best song written for a motion picture, it also won a Grammy for Best Song written for a motion Picture. Monsters Inc. was powered by John Goodman as James P. Sullivan (Sulley for short), and Billy Crystal as Mike Wazowski.

Monsters Mike and Sulley work for a power company called Monsters Inc. Their job is to sneak into children's bedrooms at night and scare them. The children's screams generate the power to run the city. Everything is going great. They are the top power creators, until Sulley accidentally lets a child through the doors into Monster land. Children are considered a contamination and should not be touched. Sully and Mike try to figure out how to get the child back home without contaminating themselves, or the child being discovered.

#5 Children's Animated Movie: Aladdin

Aladdin is another Disney masterpiece, released in 1992, it grossed almost 502 million worldwide, and won two Oscars, 3 Golden Globes, and 2 Grammies. Featuring the voices of Scott Weinger as Aladdin, Linda Larkin as Princess Jasmine, and Robin Williams as Jafar.

Aladdin is a child of the streets when he meets Princess Jasmine. Soon he finds himself caught up in an evil plot by Jafar. He finds a genie in a lamp, and is granted 3 wishes. He uses one of his wishes to become a prince so he will be able to marry Princess Jasmine. The evil Jafar has other plans in mind. Will Aladdin be able to foil Jafar's plans, and win the princesses heart? If you haven't already checked this Disney classic out, it is definitely worth watching. (Rated G)

# 4 Children's Animated Movie: Shrek & Shrek 2...Now Shrek The Third

Will Shrek # 4 make the ranks?

The number 4 trio on the list of top animated children's movies is Shrek and Shrek 2, and Shrek The Third. Will Shrek The Fourth be good enough to join them?

If I did a list of my favorite animated movies, Shrek and Shrek 2 would top the list. I think that is part of their appeal. Adults love these two movies as much as children do. These two movies also help keep this from being a Disney top ten! It is good to see another great movie production company (Dreamworks) in the running.

In order to reclaim his swamp from the fairy tale creatures, Shrek (an Ogre), goes on a mission for Lord Farquaad. The mission is to rescue Princess Fiona from a dragon's lair. But everything is not as it seems. With Donkey along for the ride everything soon gets interesting.

This film released in 2001, was produced by Dreamworks Studios, and features the voices of Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, and John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad. Securing its place as a top animated film by grossing over 455 million worldwide, and over 267 million in the US. (Rated PG)

Shrek 2 (Full Screen Edition)
This is my favorite of the two. Dreamworks not only did a sequel that lived up to the original, but I think they made it even better! I didn't think they could top the original but they certainly did. Mike Myers is back as Shrek, as well as Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Camaron Diaz as Princess Fiona, and they introduced Puss in Boots voiced by Antonio Banderas.

Released in 2002, Shrek 2 topped the movie charts for several weeks, grossing over 880 million worldwide, and 267 million in the US. Wow! The box office gross ensured Shrek 2's spot on the list of top animated children's movies.

Shrek 2 starts while Shrek and Fiona are still on their honeymoon. They receive a request from Fiona's parents to come for a visit. Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey journey to Fiona's home in Far Far Away. Her parents are less than thrilled she has married an Ogre. Her father had a deal with the Fairy God Mother for Fiona to marry Prince Charming. The king tries to find a way to do away with Shrek. Another of my all time favorite children's movies. A family of superheroes is forced to suppress their powers and conform in middle class suburbia. When someone from the past attempts to take over the world the Incredibles are forced into action to stop him.

Released in 2004 The Incredibles grossed over 624 million worldwide, and 261 million in the US. The film won two Oscars including Best Achievement in Sound Editing, and Best Animated Feature Film of the Year. Featuring the voices of Craig T. Nelson as Mr. Incredible, Holly Hunter as Elastigirl (Mrs. Incredible), Samuel L Jackson as Frozone, Jason Lee as Syndrome, Spencer Fox as Dash, and Sarah Vowell as Violet. Number 2 on the list of top animated children's movies is The Lion King.

When it was released in 1994, it became the top grossing children's movie of all time. Grossing over 783 million worldwide, and over 312 million in the US. It would hold that record for almost ten years. It still remains one of the top grossing movies in the world. Many consider it the best Disney film ever!

When Simba is born his uncle becomes second in line to inherit the lion kingdom. He plots to kill the King (Mafusa), and Simba. Mafusa is killed, and Simba runs away believing it is his fault. As an adult he returns to the kingdom to avenge his fathers death.

The Lion King won 2 Oscars, one for Best Music Original Score, and another for Best Song. The film also won two Golden Globes, and was a critic favorite. Featuring the voice of Jonathan Taylor Thomas as the young Simba, Matthew Broderick as the grown up Simba, James Earl Jones as King Mafusa, and Jeremy Irons as Scar. (Rated G)

Did you guess it way back at number 10 (or did you cheat and peak)?

The top animated children's movie of all time is Finding Nemo. Released in 2003, by (can you guess?) Pixar Studios and Disney. This movie is in the top spot because it had an amazing box office draw, grossing over 865 million worldwide, and 339 million in the US. This film was loved by critics, youngsters, and the young at heart. This earned it a top spot in almost every countdown I checked.

Finding Nemo won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, and showcases the voices of Albert Brooks as Marlin, Ellen Degeneres as Dory, and Alexander Gould as Nemo.

The story of a clown fish father and his son, who are alone in the world after the rest of the family is stolen from their home.

On the first day of school Nemo is snagged by a scuba diver and becomes a pet in a dentist's fish tank. Nemo's father sets out across the ocean to track him down. He meets Dory a forgetful tang fish. The story tells of their travels, and Nemo and his captive buddies attempts at escape from their fish tank.

They didn't quite make the top 10 animated children's movies list, but they are still worth mentioning.

In Ice Age we meet 3 unlikely accomplices, Manny the mammoth, voiced by Ray Romano, Sid the Sloth, voiced by John Leguizano, and Diego the saber tooth tiger, voiced by Denis Leary. The three are forced to join together in an attempt to return a human baby to its hunter father. (2002)

The team is back in Ice Age: The Meltdown, released in 2006, the gang is back for an even faster paced movie, with more action than the original.

Manny, Sid, and Diego return, and they are joined by some new characters. One is Ellie a mammoth (voiced by Queen Latifah) who thinks she is a possum.

Their quest is to escape the valley they live in before a melting glaciar cracks and fills their world with water. (2006)

Finding Nemo deserves to be number 1! I'd push Toy Story higher and add Monster's Inc., Ratatouille, A Bug's Life, and Antz. I'm a sucker for the Pixar and new Dreamworks stuff over the older, traditionally animated Disney movies.
