Top 10 Horse Movies of All Time

The Black Stallion is a timeless classic that tells of a love story between a boy and a horse. This horse movie is many things, happy, sad, thrilling, suspenseful and as if that wasn't enough, the scenery is breathtaking and the action, heart stopping. It is a family favorite at our house. Everyone loves it from the kids to the grandparents. This is a movie not to be missed.

National Velvet is another amazing horse movie for the entire family. It has a great cast that can do no wrong, Mickey Rooney, Elizabeth Taylor, Donald Crisp, Anne Revere and Angela Lansbury. There is a heartwarming combination of innocence and a love for horses that makes all dreams come true. I loved this movie when I was a young girl and then my daughter fell in love with it and watched it dozens of times. You won't want to miss this great family classic.

This is a beautiful movie, but it is also very sad and could be too heart wrenching for small children. Black Beauty is a story told from the horses perspective and relates the happy, sad and cruel life experiences that many horses encounter. This horse movie will touch you from beginning to end.

On October 8, 2010, Walt Disney Pictures released a new horse movie, Secretariat, The Impossible True Story. My family and I went to see it on opening day and I must say it instantly became one of our favorites. I am a fan of almost all horse movies but this fabulous movie did make my top ten list. It was beautifully filmed, the cast was perfect and the story kept you entertained. The best part is that it was a good story that did not need tragedy or abuse to make it interesting.

It was difficult to decided where to place this movie on the top 10 list. I have decided to put it fourth, due to the lack of tragedy, abuse and other heart wrenching content.

Secretariat - The Impossible True Story is rated PG

The Horse Whisperer has an amazing cast consisting of Robert Redford, Kristin Scott Thomas, Scarlette Johannson, Sam Neill and Diane Wiest. Robert Redford is also the director. Need I say more. While this movie ends on a positive note, it is very sad and a definite tear jerker. It contains many adult situations and tragic scenes that are not appropriate for young children. Why would anyone want to watch this horse movie? Well, it is honest, inspiring, touching and is beautifully filmed. It has a power that will make you want to watch it again and again.

Hidalgo is a great horse movie. It is about a mustang, Hidalgo, and his owner, Frank T. Hopkins, who compete in a 3,000 mile horse race in the Arabian desert. It is based on a true story but much of the movie strays from the facts. However, if you are just looking for an amazing horse movie it will not matter.

Hidalgo is rated PG-13

Dreamer is a great family movie. This story and cast are perfection. It is beautifully filmed and has a very happy ending. This horse movie is rated PG due to a few tragic moments. It is recommended for ages 6 and older.

This is another excellent horse racing movie for the entire family. It is full of great American history, including Seabiscuit a feisty little race horse with a lot of heart.

Seabiscuit is rated PG-13

Running Free is an excellent movie. It was given a G rating but I would not recommend this movie for young or overly sensitive children. There are many hardships that the horses go through and it is heartbreaking. This horse movie ends happy but we cried almost the entire movie.

This animated horse movie is a favorite of both children and adults. It is a great story of a wild mustang fighting for his freedom. This movie will take you through a wide range of emotions. It is a horse movie that should not be missed.
