Top 10 Reasons To Eat Organic Foods

Ranked #8,354 in Food & Cooking, #140,960 overall

Why Eat Organic Food?

Why buy organic -- a truly controversial topic. The better question is why haven't we been buying organic all along? The processes that we currently have in place to produce the nation's food were developed decades ago at a time when science in this area was in its infancy. We did not realize the impact of pesticides in the human body (cancer). We didn't then understand there could be repercussions to injecting our cattle with growth hormone or our chickens with antibiotics.

As time passed, the pursuit of money became the primary motivator in developing our food producing procedures. Somewhere along the way we lost our humanity. Money is the sole metric when determing whether to allow a hen to grow at its natural pace as nature intended or to genetically engineer it to grow in a third of the time. But what about doing the right thing? Shouldn't that count as well? If we live our existence based entirely on the pursuit of money, we risk losing touch with our humanity in the process.

The goal of this article is not to convince you to eat organic food. The goal of this article is to challenge you to think. Question why you can't pronounce mysterious chemical ingredients on a box of cereal marketed to our children. Question why it is "normal" to spray our fruits and vegetables with poison. And most importantly of all, question why we as consumers continue to support these companies that are harming us by purchasing their products.

The eye opening documentary "Food, Inc.", as featured on the Oprah Winphrey Show, exposes the travesties behind the production of our nation's food which will fundamentally alter your viewpoints on what you eat. The nature of this industry has changed from farming to manufacturing. We now have food "factories" as opposed to traditional, natural farms. Meanwhile the public is suffering from an onslaught of health problems and enviromental dangers.

The encouraging thing about all of this is it can change. "Food, Inc." shows you what you can do about it. The power truly lies with the individual.

Watching this video together as a family will profoundly change your life for the better. Isn't that worth less than a $20 investment for a DVD?

Number 10 -- Lose Weight

type=textEating organic means eating healthy. While calorie counting and exercise should always be a part of one's fitness regimen, just the act of eating organic can cause you to lose weight.

Pesticides, hormones and preservatives cannot be processed by the liver and therefore place excess stress upon the organ. As a result, a build up of artificial products in the fat stores of your body occurs.

Number 9 -- Lead By Example/Do the Right Thing

And change the world in the process

type=textChange is never easy. It's easier to accept rather than question. It's easier to stay with what's familiar rather than venture into the unknown. It's easier to see what is directly in front of us rather than look 30 years into the future.

Change occurs at the individual level. One person can make all the difference. Changing a culture's mindset starts with you.

Stand up for what's right. Watch "Food, Inc." (Food, Inc.) then lend the DVD to a friend. Tell people about your great experience at Whole Foods (Whole Foods Market) or your local farmers' market. Do the right thing and and others will follow.

Number 8 -- Organic Farming is Good For the Planet

type=textThe primary focus of organic farming is to use practices that build healthy soils. Healthy soil is the foundation of the food chain. Organic farms respect our water resources. The elimination of polluting chemicals and nitrogen leaching, done in combination with soil building, protects and conserves water. Organic farmers work in harmony with nature by respecting the balance of a healthy ecosystem. Wildlife is encouraged by including forage crops in rotation and by retaining fence rows, wetlands, and other natural areas.

Buy organic and be proud of the fact that you are contributing to an industry that cares.

Number 7 -- Give Your Money to America's Farmers Rather Than the Pharmaceutical Corporations

Spend your money on the front end

type=textIt's a really simple concept -- spend a little more on food by buying organic and spend way less on medications further down the line. Be proactive versus reactive. Eat healthy now and be healthy later.

There is a misconception that we get old and things start falling apart by middle age. This is simply not true. However, based on a poor diet of highly processed foods and a sedentary lifestyle with little to no exercise, this will most certainly be the outcome. You don't have to grow old prematurely. You don't have to take medications every day. You have the power to change things. You have choices.

Eat organic foods now that help prevent cancer and many other forms of disease and you will spend far less on prescription drugs later in life.

Number 6 -- Support a Good Cause

Go Green

type=textWhen you purchase produce locally, you minimize your carbon footprint (fuel used for the transportation of goods). When you purchase from organic farmers, you are supporting a healthy circle of life. When you buy from conscientious companies such as Whole Foods Market, you are choosing to show support for their green initiatives, the 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), natural energy sources, and more.

One of the Kansas City metro area Whole Foods locations has recycled 66.67 tons of material since its inception. Which landfill do you think Wal-Mart dumped their 66.67 tons of trash in? Who do you feel better about supporting?

Number 5 -- Better Skin, Hair, Eyes, Teeth, etc.

type=textWe need sunlight in moderation. Humans aren't meant to be cave dwellers. Sunlight causes the release of vitamin D in our systems which scientists are just now beginning to appreciate the importance of. However, a particular type of sun radiation (UV rays) is believed to be one of the primary causes of aging of the skin. Over exposure generates harmful compounds called free radicals in the body. To stop free radicals from prematurely aging your skin, antioxidants are essential. These protective compounds, found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, wine, tea and coffee, neutralize free radicals, guarding healthy cells from injury and can aid in the prevention of cancer as well.

People that have made the switch to organic have claimed numerous benefits including more energy and alertness, glowing skin, better hair, whiter eyes and teeth--the list goes on and on. Beauty products (a billion dollar industry annually) manufactured by the giant pharmaceutical corporations claim to do all of the above. A woman wouldn't think twice about spending $50 on a nighttime eye moisturizer, laden with unpronounceable chemicals. But what if you could achieve the same end result by spending $50 more at the grocery store?

Number 4 -- Do It For Your Children

Eat organic and lead by example

type=textSadly, many of our current systems are outdated and damaging the planet. This will catch up to us at some point in the not so far off future. Unfortunately this burden will likely fall on our children and even more dramatically on our grandchildren.

What if someone told you there was a way to truly lessen the chances of your daughter developing breast cancer in her adulthood? What if you could prevent your son from becoming obese and developing diabetes? What if you already have this ability?

The organic and "green" initiatives are intertwined. Children tend to replicate in their adult lives what they learn during their childhood. Do the right thing and show your children how to eat healthy. Lead by example. After all, it will be up to the next generation to save the planet we have so badly damaged.

Number 3 -- Cancer Prevention

Organic foods combat cancer

type=textYears ago industrialized farming began spraying pesticides on our fruits and vegetables as a means of killing insects and small animals that would eat the crops, thereby reducing revenues. These same pesticides can be absorbed into fruits and vegetables. Although you can remove some pesticide residues with washing, long-term exposure to pesticides has been associated with cancer, infertility and neurological conditions, such as Parkinson's Disease. This does not even begin to take into effect the damage to soil, our water supply, the birds that eat the insects, and the entire circle of life.

It's no coincidence that so many people die of cancer today. The number of unnnatural things we put in our bodies is astounding. Not only will eating organic food prevent pesticides from entering your system, but certain healthy foods we eat can actually turn on or off the genes that cause us to develop cancer.

Number 2 -- Be Healthier/Better Quality of Life/Wellness

See the world through a new perspective

type=textThere's something magical that inexplicably changes inside when you begin adapting healthy lifestyle principles. The air tastes crisper, your sense of smell becomes more defined and you grow to become more appreciative of nature. This wondrous sense of being envelopes you and you become more aware and more alive than you've ever felt before.

Eating organic will simply make you feel better. It's one of those intangible, indescribable changes. The difference is amazing.

Number 1 -- Live Longer

Increase your longevity

type=textThere is something instinctual inside us all that wants to be, to exist. Each of us wants to live the longest, healthiest life we possibly can.

Challenge your mind, move your body and eat things that nature intended us to. A diet consisting of organic foods in conjunction with an active lifestyle is the absolute best way to experience joy and maximize your lifespan.

Do you eat organic foods?

Or do you prefer your food doused in pesticides?

Is it worth spending the extra money to buy organic, or is it a waste?

Li-Li-ThePinkBookworm says:

Yes! If you want to live longer, be healthier, and help real farmers, then organic is the way to go.

Frischy says:

I have made the switch, in spite of the fact that I have a lower income. I have found local sources of organic foods that are cheaper than the grocery store. I also grow some of my own food. My friends grow different things than I do, and we supply each other. I discovered we actually eat less due the nutritional density of the food, and we save by not spending money on food that does not satisfy us. I am not spending more and we are getting healthier. When you get right down to it, I do not think it has to cost more, although it is definitely more time-consuming.

bunyip says:

I agree that it is far better to spend extra money and buy organic foods but for those on very low incomes the extra cost of organic produce is prohibitive. If money was not an issue I would definitely buy more organic produce.

JeremiahStanghini says:

I was out at a restaurant the other night and saw a wonderful quote about "why do we call it organic?" It went on to say that we should just call it 'food' and that any other kind of 'food' should have to add the adjective (inorganic) or something else like that.

Miss_Organic says:

It is definitely worth it to spend the money on organic whole foods. However, junk food is not good for you, organic or not. Just because organic is on the label doesn't mean it is healthy.
