Top 50 Most Fun Things to Do In Hawaii

Ranked #392 in Travel & Places, #20,009 overall

--- Planning a Hawaii Vacation? ---

I know you want to have fun.

This is my list of the top 50 most-fun, must-do, most-best-awesome, things to do in Hawaii!

First I'll talk in general terms about what you can do on any island, and then I'll get into specifics about what is most fun to do on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai.

And before you go, be sure to leave me a comment, and sign up to get my free travel guides to Hawaii. Aloha!

First!

First, Here's the Top 10 Most Fun Things to Do On ANY Island.

Hawaii Must-Sees and Must-Dos!

Must Do #1; Hang Out on ANY Beach

and ENJOY the Great Weather

hanalei beachOk, so this might seem obvious, but it's only obvious because it's so true. You've never seen beaches like in Hawaii and you've never seen weather like Hawaii weather. Both are awesome.

No matter which island you go to there will be at least a few beaches that will make your jaw drop. The Big Island even has a green sand beach and a few black sand beaches.

Plus, the beaches are cool, and fun. Ok, so you probably won't get to waterski, but there's tons of other things to do on all the beaches in Hawaii.

Even if you go in December, the water will be plenty warm enough to swim in at about 72 degrees F.

You WILL Want a Waterproof Camera

These you can take anywhere, and use in the rain or pool or ocean

(I've got one, and they really are waterproof, and wonderful)

Must-Do #2: See Dolphins Whales and Turtles

dolphin mom and babyWhen I first moved to Hawaii this was one of my favorite things. It seemed that no matter where I went if I looked out on the water I could see pods of 50+ dolphins swimming past. You can even swim with dolphins, in the wild or at a program.

During the months of November to May the Humpback Whales take a trip from Alaska down to Hawaii. They can also be seen from shore.

And turtles. There are lots of beaches in Hawaii, like Kahaluu and Punaluu on the Big Island where the turtles just hang out. Don't touch them though. These are sea turtles. They can be more than a hundred pounds - my husband saw one that had a shell as big as the hood of a car. They aren't the kinds of freshwater turtles you're used to.

Must Do #3: Get Out On a Boat

Dinner Cruise, Snorkel Cruise, Catamaran Sail, Charter Fishing Trip - WHATEVER

dolphins bow riding on the fair winds boat on the big islandSo the ocean is what it's all about in Hawaii, and you make sure you don't leave without getting out on at least ONE boat! Your most inexpensive option would be a catamaran sail from Waikiki Beach.

My favorites are big catamaran snorkel cruises like the Fair Winds on the Big Island or a Na Pali Cruise.

Or You May want a Disposable Waterproof Camera

Here's the disposable option

These ones work well. We've used many over the years and the pictures are always good.

Must Do #4: Scuba, Snuba, or Snorkel

snubaMany dive shops in Hawaii will take beginners down for the first time ever. They give you a class that teaches you what to do and maybe gives you some practice, and then you can be scuba diving in Hawaii!

If even that sounds like too much for you, you could try Snuba. It's where you are way underneath the water, but your oxygen is coming from a tube above you. Same things as Scuba, but a bit safer and easier - less complicated.

and snorkel! Snorkel anywhere in Hawaii. Somewhere with a bit of rocks is best as this is where the fish like to hang out. You can even do a controlled night snorkel at Hanauma Bay on Oahu.

Check the hawaii entertainment book for boat and snorkel coupons.

Must Do #5: Enjoy the Culture of Hawaii

Luaus, hula shows, leis, and the people

hawaiian petroglyphHawaii is a special place, and not just becuase of the land. The people and the culture and the language are fascinating and beautiful. Hawaii is the only place that you can still be in a U.S. state and experience lifestyle and culture this different from the mainland.

Luau's are a very popular way to get a big dosage of the culture in your face. You eat the food, watch the hula show, maybe get a lei and get to talk with some locals. Sometimes the hawaii entertainment book has 25% off coupons for some of them and the Go Oahu Card also offers luau discounts.

If you are lucky you may find a free hula show. Waikiki usually hosts one every Friday night. Your hotel may host one for you. Sometimes you find them in malls and shopping centers.

You can order a lei greeting for when you get off the plane. Is it worth it? Yeah, probably, if it's your first time to Hawaii and you are really into it.

There are also places on most of the islands where you can go and see Hawaiian petroglyphs. Very fascinating slice of history.

Must Do #6: Play Golf

If you are into it

hawaii golf greenOk, so this isn't a must-do for me because I don't play golf, but if you have ever enjoyed the sport, Hawaii is a place to check out golf.

You've never seen the views and holes and greens like you've seen in Hawaii. Play out in the middle of a lava field, or watch whales jump in the distance while you walk to your hole.

Hawaii Must-Do #7: See Big Waves and Awesome Surfers

and maybe take a lesson

stand up paddleboardingHawaii is truly amazing, and in the winter when the surf is big, you will be wowed at the size of the waves on the north shore of most of the islands. They are ground-shakingly amazing. You probably have never seen anything like it.

You can wach surfers anywhere, anytime though. Most surfers will go out and enjoy waves that are only a fraction of the size of the monsters.

If you get inspired, maybe you'll want to take a surfing lesson, or rent a boogie board, or rent a kayak, or take a kite-surfing lesson.

OR, this is the new, fun, easy one, do some stand-up paddleboarding, like in the picture above! It's kind of like a kayak, easy to balance on, but you are standing up. good fun!

On Waikiki beach, you can just show up and you'll find surfing lessons easy to get. Anywhere else, just stop in at a local scuba diving or snorkel rental shop and they can get you going.

Or, You May Want a Waterproof Camera Bag

GENIUS

I've had two of these, both dicapacs, and both worked great. Our first one wore out after about 8 months. We lived by the hot ponds on the Big Island and my son was learning to swim so we must have taken 200+ videos of him in the warm water. It always kept our nice camera completely dry. Eventually I noticed a teeny bit of water getting in the outside seal and to be safe I got a new one.

So, if you already have a digital camera, just get the bag and keep using it. Just pay attention because sometimes the picture can get a little black circle on one corner if the camera isn't straight in the bag.

There are two videos below, the Kealakekua Bay one, and the Snorkeling With a Turtle one, both were taken with the camera bag on a digital camera.

Hawaii Must-Do #8: Hike, and take Nature Tours

puuhonuaThere's plenty of hiking in Hawaii, some of it really super-cool, like in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and on the Na Pali Coast. There's also easy hikes like the diamond head hike.

You can take nature tours on private and public land to see waterfalls and petroglyphs and valleys.

You can take horseback riding tours or wagon tours or ATV tours or 4WD tours or duck tours or lava tours.

Must Do in Hawaii # 9: See Waterfalls

and water falls :)

akaka falls on the big islandOk, this could have gone under nature hikes, cuz you'll have to hike in to see a lot of the waterfalls, but since it's so HUGE for most people, it got it's own top spot.

Many people, when they think of Hawaii, think of an idyllic waterfall falling into a deep freshwater pool that they can swim in and maybe get romantic in.

Well, it's not *quite* like that, although you can have that if you want it.

Many waterfalls in Hawaii are hard to get to, along bug-infested paths, or impossible or unsafe to swim under. A few waterfalls have been closed to the public because of past injuries or deaths.

Anyway, here's a few waterfalls that you might like to check out (no swimming)

and here's a few waterfalls in Hawaii you can swim under:

So have an adventure in Hawaii!

Top 10 Most Fun Activities on the Big Island

Check Out Big Island Waterfalls
The Big Island doesn't have a lot of waterfalls, but it's got a few *spectacular* ones.
Hike Out to See Hot Lava
You can't always see hot lava, but when it's flowing, it's awesome.
See the Rest of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
The flowing lava sometimes ventures outside of the National Park, so right now (May 2010) the lava is about a 40 minute drive away from the visitors center and the Jaggar museum and Halemaumau crater.
Get to Kealakekua Bay, However you can
I like the Fair Wind Boat tour, but lots of people prefer to kayak.
Manta Ray Night Dive
These things get HUGE and they are totally harmless.
Check Out Waipio Valley
This valley is amazing and beautiful. It's one of the few places in this country where there are still wild horses.
See a Black Sand Beach
There's a couple of black sand beaches on the Big Island - this is the most well-known.
See a Green Sand Beach
This one is hard to get to, but very interesting. A once-in-a-lifetime place
Visit One of the Top 3 Beaches on the Big Island
Hapuna beach - try your hand at boogie boarding or just hang out. Great all-around beach.
Atlantis Submarine in Kona
This actually isn't too expensive. It's fun for all ages. When we went we saw dolphins underwater - that was cool. If you don't scuba, this will be your only chance to get this vantage point.

Top 10 Most Fun, Best Things to Do on Oahu

Arizona Memorial
The memorial itself actually isn't that 'fun' but people love it for the history. What is fun, right next door at Pearl Harbor, is the USS Bowfin submarine tour and the Mighty Mo tour and the museums. If you have young boys, this is a MUST-DO. My son loves the submarine and the Mighty Mo.
Waikiki Catamaran Sail
Walk onto Waikiki Beach, spot the catamaran and you could be on the water in an hour or two for $25 or so. Great price, easy and fun.
Swim with Dolphins
Best dolphin tours on Oahu. They take care of you, and the dolphins.
Get Out of Waikiki
Oahu is stunningly beautiful and has wonderfully accessible beaches. You MUST get out of Waikiki to see the real Oahu.
Hanauma Bay Snorkel
Hanauma Bay is cool. If you've done Molokini crater on Maui or Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island, you don't need to brave the crowds to do Hanuma bay, but if you haven't, Hanauma Bay is as good as any of them. Plus, Hanauma Bay has a NIGHT snorkel once a month. totally cool
Polynesian Cultural Center
All the luaus on Oahu are good - but if you really want to be IMMERSED in Polynesian culture, this is the place to check out. Sometimes the Hawaii entertainment book has a coupon.
Kayak Kailua
Like something you'd see in a movie.
Waikiki Surf Lessons
I've seen toddlers and grandmas do it.
Sunset Cruise
From Waikiki, the sunsets are a-maze-ing .. and you can see them almost always. The weather is practically perfect just about every day of the year. Not to be missed.
Take a Hike
Oahu's got some cool hikes - some waterfalls, some views, some rainforest.
Save Money On Oahu
This link is to a review of the Hawaii Entertainment book. The book is for all the islands, but it has TONS of coupons for Oahu. Thousands of dollars worth. it's pretty cool. I buy it every year. Oahu is definitely the best island to save money on. It als has the go oahu card which is like a discount card for activities.

Top 10 Funnest Maui Activities

Go to Hana
Hana is way far away from the rest of Maui and the road out there is lined with views and waterfalls. It's a destination in itself. The book below this list, Maui Revealed, does a complete mile-by-mile description of all the best stuff to do and see.
Whale Watch
Maui is known for it's great whale-watching. Lahaina is where the whales always seem to show up first when they come in November or December, and a lot of them like Maui it seems.
Bike Down the Volcano
Ok, this is cool for some people, and others don't like it at all. The views are amazing, and it's another only-in-hawaii ... but if you like to bike then it's for you.
Learn to Surf
Surfing lessons are great fun.
Glass Bottom Boat Tour
There's glass bottom boats on all the islands, but I think this is the coolest.
Molokini Snorkel
Awesome boat trip. See tons of turtles and fish.
Maui Adventure Tours
Be brave! have fun!
Ride Horses
There are lots of upcountry places to ride horses and take in the beauty of Maui.
Rent a camper van
Hawaii doesn't do RVs, but it's seems like such a waste since there are miles and miles of shoreline just begging ffor camping. here's a good alternative.
Check out some of the Best Beaches in the world
You know that Dr. Beach, top 10 beaches list. Well, Maui is always on it. Or it least they should be. great beaches on maui.

Top 10 Best Things to Do On Kauai

Hike the Napali Coast
Or, just check it out from the lookout.
Na Pali Coast Boat Trip
I really like the rafting trip above, but these days they have to sail from really far away, so also consider a catamaran cruise.
Waimea Canyon
Nothing else like it in Hawaii. Truly remarkable.
Amazing Helicopter Tours
see stuff you can only see in the air.
Hawaii Movie Tours
Gilligan's Island, Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blue Hawaii - all filmed here. Great sights.
POIPU
Actually, the entire south shore should be checked out. Always sunny and warm with countless beaches. great place to sight-see and get in the water.
Tubing
Ok, this is kind of like Fluming Da Ditch on the Big Island - not super exciting, but fun and different. Instead of in a river, you are in an old irrigation dip. Worth a look-see.
Take in a Luau
Eat the hawaiian food, see a show, maybe dance. good stuff.
Kauai Snorkel Tour
Super-good-fun. I always love snorkeling tours.
Take the Ferry to Lanai for the day
