News Flash - Baby Obama born in South Florida!
Sanjae Obama Fisher was born at 8 p.m. EST at Hollywood's Memorial Regional Hospital to Patrick and Sasha Hall Fisher.
According to a hospital spokeswoman, it was the father's idea to name the baby after the senator from Illinois bound to be declared the president-elect.
After 14 hours at the hospital, mom could still watch the final phase of the election.

I would have to give serious thought to naming my son Barack Obama. I seriously doubt that I could convince my husband to name a daughter that though. :)

Ah, my darling and fellow celebrity, I sure would. In fact, I think it's a great name for any fan of Alabama -- 'Oh Bama!' is what the baby would hear. We've added a name to our newest kitty, Boots Obama. I'm offering her up as the new Whitehouse Kitten. Maybe one of the girls would be interested?

Well, no, but I just heard where a lot of people in Kenya are doing just that.
I also heard someone say that the new puppy should be named, Bark Obama!

No. I would not choose a celebrity name, no matter who it is.

I'd never name my child after a President! A little too trendy for me. Why is the name Obama so popular? Shouldn't Barack be popular too then?
I do like other celebrity names, but I have yet to hear a President's name that I like...hmmm, except Kennedy is cute for a girl! :)

Sean (no relation) says:
Give me a break! People today are so stupid, that they have to follow the latest trend. Woe to the parents that pick a controversial name, like "Adolph Hitler". One couple that did that, had their children taken by the State. So let that be a warning to all of you to use Politically Correct names only!

Nah, names should be an individual identity...besides, as much as I have high hopes for Obama, we never know what his legacy may actually be. I'd hate to have been named after George Bush for example...

I have a friend who named his first born Halen after Eddie Van, the famous Mr. Bertinelli. Even if Halen is not that uncommon of a name, I'll always see little Halen as a tribute to someone else. Furthermore, Barak Obama has a duel last name feel to me. Kinda like a woman who didn't want to give up her maiden name. Mrs. Michelle Barak-Obama?

One Explanation Of the Name "Barack Obama"
More Interpretations Of "Barack" and "Obama"
Plus, a portrait on Wikipedia
From WikiAnswers:Obama is a name from the Luo ethnic group of southwestern Kenya, where Barack Obama Sr. was born. It was originally the given name of Barack Obama's great-grandfather. It is based on the Luo (technically, Dholuo, the name of the language of the Luo) word bam, which means "crooked, slightly bending" . The prefix O- means "he", and many Luo male names begin with it. Since most traditional Luo names were given by the baby's mother referring to something about the child's birth, the best guess is that when Obama's great-grandfather was born one of his arms or legs looked slightly bent. It is NOT Arabic, for goodness' sake.
From About.com (continued on the site)
The Senator's first name, Barack, is a Swahili name that has its origins in the Arabic language. The original Arabic root of the name (B-R-K) means "blessed." In Arabic, the root word is used in many other phrases to denote blessings and to describe people who are blessed:
* Mabruk! = "Congratulations!"
* Barakallah feek = "May God bless you"
* Barakah = blessings from God (feminine version of the name)

- Well, I like "Barack" a lot better than "Obama" for a first name, but I loved growing up being the only person in a county-wide area with my name, so I made sure my kids had that blessing too! 5***** for a unique lens, even if the name is soon to be not-so-unique any more. :-)
