Best Man Speeches

Being asked to be best man can be a daunting task for many people, and a bit of a two-edged sword. On one hand you may feel honoured to have been asked by the groom, but you are expected to do some work on the day, including giving the all important and much dreaded best man speech.

However, the good news is that by putting a little bit of preparation time in before the big day, best man speeches are pretty straightforward. And as you'll see below, you'll have one of the best audiences you're ever likely to have listen to you.

So, sit back and relax and I'll go through all the steps you need to give the ultimate best man speeches that you'll be long remembered for - and for all the right reasons!

Best Man Speeches: who is the groom?

The first thing to do before actually trying to write a speech is to sit down and think about the groom - remember, the best man speech is about him, not about you.

How long have you known him? How did you meet? What do you have in common? Why is he such a good mate? What do you hate about him? What does he like to do?

Just note down whatever comes to you for a few minutes and then try and think of any funny stories that may relate to the topics above - remember that the bride will also be there, so be careful what you choose.

Remember to consider the audience - find out who has been invited, what they know about the groom, whether they'll be able to relate to what you're planning to tell them.

Above all, make sure you don't offend anyone, and since there will be wide age ranges and backgrounds you should play things safe.

It doesn't have to be side splittingly funny, but if it makes you smile, then that may be good enough. Now begins some fun - how can you embellish the story to make it really funny?

Best Man Speeches: writing it all down

Best man speeches are about two things. First they're about thanking the bride and groom on your behalf and the bridesmaids. Second they are about entertaining the guests with a story that can mildly embarrass the groom.

The best way to structure your speech is to get the thanks in immediately and then move on. But in order to help me relax I like to get a joke in to start with and make both the guests and myself have a laugh.

Once that's out they way I can get into the guts of the speech and don't forget to round it off with a conclusion. To start with you may prefer to write the entire speech down, but start by reading it out loud to find what sounds ok - you'll be surprised that much of what is good when written down is no good at all in a speech.

Gradually refine the words and the story until you've got it down perfectly. On the day you just need some cue cards to provide pointers of what you need to say next. You won't forget the punchline, so don't worry about it and the audience wants to be entertained, so you'll have no trouble in getting them to laugh, especially after they've had a glass or two to drink.

Enjoy the day and don't drop the ring. Once you've got that bit over successfully, you'll find that giving best man speeches is not as hard as it first sounds.
