Schwinn started the comeback in 1995 with the reissued Black Phantom to celebrate the company's 100th birthday. Similar offerings appeared later from Columbia, Roadmaster and Harley-Davidson even licensed a cruiser bike with their logo and trademark styling.
Classic "retro" looks, reliable mechanical performance, comfortable ride, and relatively low price are the appeal factors of late and we now have many town clubs sponsoring regular cruiser rides as a way to promote the low-tech, high fun aspect of cycling.

An inspiration for the mountain bikes
The growth of the mountain bike sports, beginning in the late 1970s and early 1980s, is attributed largely to the cruiser bikes as their strong frames formed the basis in the development of the mountain bike.Mountain biking was introduced as an offroad terrain sports, racing was done on rocky and steep mountaisides where the riders have the share of stumbles and slams over rocks, mud and what have you. Where regular road bikes was no match for these conditions, these riders found their alternative in the 'old balloon-tired clunkers' as the call it, which have a much stronger frame and is able to withstand the rough and rigors of the sports.
Riders like Gary Fisher, who added gears to his old Schwinn Excelsior enabling him to ride up and down the mountain, and Joe Breeze, who makes the Schwinn Excelsior more suited to the "Repack" course are the the names to go by in the sports.
