Free iPhone applications in the App Store

The iPhone App Store is now flooded with applications - both free and paid. While it offers a great choice for users, it also makes it difficult to select the best ones. I have made a list of the best 10 applications that exist in the App Store as of today. I will expand this article as new and better applications are introduced in the store.

eReader: The best eBook reader

Do you need the Kindle anymore?

eReader.com is a website dedicated to selling eBooks of all kinds. Most new books are available in all different formats. The eReader software for the iPhone allows you to read the books that you purchase from eReader or from the Fictionwise website.

eReader for iPhone supports portrait and landscape view, an inverse mode which helps you read the books in the dark without straining your eyes, support to read your own hosted eBooks and plenty of other features. Using this software once will make you feel that you don't need to purchase that Kindle from Amazon.

I felt that books are very comfortable to read on the iPhone because of the large and high resolution screen. To turn pages you have to just flick your fingers gently across the screen. In my opinion, one of the best applications in the AppStore.

Remote Application

Apple does it again

This is a remote control application for your iTunes and Apple TV. Using this application, you can control the iTunes libraries of all the PCs and Macs available in your local Wi-Fi network. You have to pair your iPhone or iPod Touch with each library separately.

This application works wonderfully. It will be very useful if you have your home theatre or music system hooked to your computer. Changing music or videos is then just a flick across the iPhone's screen!

Labyrinth Light Edition

Hours of enjoyment

Labyrinth LE is a free game which brings the classic game to the iPhone. The accelerometer controls are splendidly implemented. The ball movement is smooth and the graphics is fantastic. You will forget that you are playing it on the iPhone. The free version offers quite a few levels which will keep you busy for hours.

Midomi

Fun and useful

Midomi is a music identification application. What makes it different from the popular Shazam application is that instead of playing live music on speakers, you can in fact hum or sing the song yourself. I found that it is about 70% accurate for popular songs.

If you are from India, you will be surprised to find that Hindi songs are also supported, but the database might not be very big for this.

1Password

You can forget your passwords now

The popular 1Password application for the mac is now available for your iPhone too. You can store all the website logins and passwords safely on the iPhone which is protected with a PIN and a master password. All your data is encrypted and stored on the iPhone for maximum security. 1Password even automatically enters your passwords in the websites that you visit. Grab this while it is free.

NetNewsWire

Read all your news at one place

Newsgator is an online RSS reader who have free desktop viewers for Mac and Windows and also for Windows Mobile and Java enabled phones. They have made their popular mac client called NetNewsWire, for the iPhone too.

The advantage of NetNewsWire is that instead of downloading feeds from individual sites, Newsgator downloads all of them at on the server and then pushes it to your applications. Newsgator provides a sync service which maintains the feeds across your desktop and mobile device with the same status. Any post that you read on your iPhone will be automatically marked as read on your desktop and vice versa. Give it a try - it is much faster than reading your feeds through Google Reader on the iPhone.

Sol Free Solitaire

The world's biggest productivity waster is now available for your iPhone too...

Search on the App Store and you will come across at least 5 solitaire implementations. Some will cost you money too.

But this one stands out. The cards are easy to read and the animations are smooth as silk. Feels like an application designed by Apple itself. It is free, so go ahead and download it.

Evernote

Your notes. Everywhere

Evernote has made an iPhone version too. This is one of my favorite applications on the PC and the Mac. Now available for iPhone, Evernote gives you quick access to all the notes that you have stored in your account.

My only gripe about the iPhone version is that it does not store the notes locally. If you are on a slower network connection, you will feel that the application is not very responsive. Other than that it is a great application to have on your iPhone if you are an Evernote user.

Apple T-Shirts from CafePress

Twitterific

Terrific Twitter Client

Chances are, you are a twitter user. Twitterific from icon factory is one of the best twitter implementations available on the App Store. It is feature rich and very responsive. Now you can send your tweets from your iPhone itself!

Pandora Radio

Use your bandwidth to the maximum

Pandora radio is a streaming radio for your iPhone. It has very efficient codecs which provide you good quality music even on an EDGE connection. While I wouldn't recommend using it with your EDGE, it works great on your 3G or Wi-Fi network.

Use the Pandora Radio when you get bored of the nusic collection on your iPod.

Conclusion

There is always more!

Out of the thousand or so applications available from the AppStore, this is only an indicative list of the best apps available. As more quality applications become available, I will keep updating this list. So check back often. Please also check out the latest blog posts from my website, as I keep writing a lot about the iPhone.
