Road bikes should be your choice if your are the active sporting type who wants to ride pretty fast or go for long distance rides, a yuppie who wants to use a bike to work, or if you're going to be riding exclusively on pavement or bitumen surface. Built for racing, road bikes have a typically slim and lightweight frame designed to allow you to ride in the most aerodynamic position possible.
Road bikes are typically outfitted with narrow, smooth high pressure tires that are designed for fast race type rides. Although these type of tires provides you with the least rolling resistance possible, road surface feel is very obvious as you ride over bumps, road surface crack or scattered pebbles. Your riding ability, agility and experience however, may reduce this to a more tolerable level or make your riding always an adventure outing.
Your road bike riding gear, appropriate for your riding environment, should be up for careful selection.

The Road Bike Style
A road bike is designed allows riders to bend far forward, reducing their profile and cutting down on wind resistance, along with putting them in a position to drive maximum power from their legs and hips through the pedals. To achieve the maximum power to weight ratio, lightweight framed road bikes are of course, the order of the day. Depending on the material used in the frame construction, road bikes can be very light and very expensive. A lighter bike is most important in climbing and just as agile in downhills and on the flats.Handlebars
Road bike handlebars go out straight from the stem and then curl under, allowing riders looking for speed to go into a hunched riding position in order to reduce wind resistance. For a more leisurely ride, riders can sit in a more upright position, with their hands on the flat, top part of the handlebars.
Gears
Modern road bikes have a wide range of gearing, allowing for anywhere from 16 to 27 possible gear combination, with low gears that allow a rider to more easily climb steep hills up through rather high gear choices that a rider uses to go really fast. Typically a road bike will have either two or three chain rings as part of the crank assembly in the front along with eight or nine gears in the cassette on the rear wheel.
Pedals
Toe clips are usually a standard accompaniment to a road bike's platform pedals, or may be added quite cheaply. The toe clips allows the rider to clip his or her cleated shoes to the pedals, providing the ability to drive the pedals through the full rotation of the circle, pulling up on the pedals during the upstroke as well as pushing them down.
