That is a very important word in health,fat loss and weight loss. We separate fat loss and weight loss many times in this blog. You can lose weight but not fat. You can lose fat but not weight. So they have to be looked at as two different things. Read that again!
Hydrogenation is the most common way of changing natural oils.
Hydrogenation has a major effect on health and fat gain. The process was invented and used to provide the non-discriminating public with cheap spreadable products and to provide a long shelf life to products at the expense of nutritional value.
It is important to know the effects of hydrogenation on natural oil and your health in order to understand what products are better to consume.
The Process
Hydrogenation changes the unsaturated and essential fatty acids in oils. The natural oils are placed under pressure with hydrogen gas at high temperatures. A metal is used as a catalyst to hydrogenate the oil. This metal is usually nickel and aluminum combined equally, but it can be copper or platinum. Remnants of the metal remain in the finished product (such as Crisco). Aluminum in the human body has been associated with Alzheimer's Disease, Osteoporosis and possibly some cancers. You can draw your own conclusions from there. Look at the ingredients of the products you buy.

It does not spoil and lasts forever ( a bit redundant). Your body in no way needs it and it may contain chemicals that are harmful. It is a completely hard fat and contains no essential fatty acids!

Margarine is essentially partially-hydrogenated oil (as is Crisco). Partially hydrogenating oil is the process of stopping hydrogenation at a certain point to get a certain mouth-feel for the product. Margarine is partially hydrogenated and so is like soft plastic. Hydrogenation kills the good fatty acids that you need. It creates trans-fatty acids.
Trans-fatty acids have been proven to increase Cholesterol and decrease beneficial High Density Lipoproteins. Margarines and shortenings constitute the bulk of trans-fatty acids found in human diet. Some countries have actually banned the use of margarine!

Refined foods that are considered starch such as white flour, corn starch and breakfast cereals are more likely to turn into fat than natural starches are because they are not digested slowly enough nor are they used efficiently. Natural starches would be buckwheat, whole wheat flour or other whole grains. Natural starches contain fiber which aid in digestion. As well they contain an abundance of vitamins and minerals which refined starches do not. This is why you will hear many health advisors urging people to switch to more natural grains, like whole wheat bread.
If you want to know some items that contain sugars or refined starches that are hidden: soft drinks, cakes, cookies, desserts and ketchup, to name a few. Also and not well known, meat such as sausage is extended with refined starches! Meat and starch mixtures are very hard to digest and usually cause bloating and gas. These are foods to try and avoid.
To increase fat loss, try to eat less refined starches. This is simple advice which works in the long run.

Why you can't lose weight if you take in too much sugar
What is it about excess sugar that will turn it into fat.The following is a short but detailed analysis of how too much sugar ingested can turn into fat on your body. And we don't want that! Be careful ingesting too much sugar such as the kind in soda or even fruit...if you want to lose fat!
Our cells have little furnaces to burn fuel for energy. These furnaces are called Mitochondria. When this mitochondria tries to break down the glucose in our body which we have just ingested, (a 6-carbon chain) it is trying to obtain energy from the glucose. The cells want energy, but not an excess amount. In doing its thing to create energy the mitochondria creates, as one of its energy steps, vinegar. Yes vinegar! Vinegar is a 2-carbon ACETATE.
This 2-carbon acetate, vinegar, is a building block for cholesterol and saturated fatty acids (not essential!). So, if these acetates are produced faster than your body can use them for energy (or turned into carbon dioxide or water), what happens? Like when you consume too much soda or fruit?
The enzymes in our cells actually take these excess acetates (the vinegar) and hook them together to make saturated fats and cholesterol. The body HAS to do this to prevent harm. Carbs Will Turn to Fat
We know that eating carbohydrates such as vegetables, fruit and grains will produce glucose that our body uses for energy.
If we take in excess glucose it only has to choices.
1. Our body stores excess glucose as fat for use in times of famine (that's what our body prepares for). This is built into our very being from times when food was in short supply.
2. It spills excess glucose over into the urine. Our body only does this if number one does not work (a sign of diabetes).
We were not designed to take in excess constantly, as in eating too many carbohydrates constantly.
This is why we are to eat only when we are hungry, and not because we are bored! Our body is normally a great regulator. When we fell not hungry we should not eat. You have to pay attention to your body to understand it.
In the past we were much more active, so we must be cautious in this new modern age of less movement. You either have to eat less, eat fewer carbohydrates or exercise more. There is no other way to stay fit.
It is only these simple things that will cause you permanent fat loss, and then permanent weight loss.

More about sugar%u2026the transportation of Vitamin C in your body is interfered with by sugar. They both use the same transportation mechanism. That means the Vitamin C that you ingest cannot go to work helping your immune or collagen building system..the stuff it normally does.
There is more. Protein is cross-linked to sugar%u2026which means, in lay terms, that it leads to aging and wrinkles. To sum it up, sugar contributes to the degeneration of the human body and plays a role in fatty degeneration by contributing to the fat in our bodies. It depletes some vitamins and interferes with the immune system.
To lose fat, and thus weight, simply eat a lot less sugar
Body Fat Scale
Although a lot of people go in for an electric body fat scale, you really can make do with an old-fashioned set of calipers. There are some simple measurements that you can do that can show body fat accurately enough. Typically, you are supposed to keep your body fat at somewhere around 5% of your mass. Although many athletes to go lower, below 3% can be unhealthy. Any lower rating on the body fat scale can be downright dangerous.
The first time most people use body fat percentage scales, they typically get a rating that is higher than they want. Sometimes, this causes completely the wrong reaction. A lot of people are in denial that they are overweight until they see the body fat scale measurement, at which point they freak out. They believe that they have to lose all the weight immediately. Many of these people take extreme measures towards dieting. Either they will completely starve themselves in an attempt to please the body fat scale, or else they will burn out too quickly and give up on losing weight. Neither of these are good options. Moderation is the key in all things.
The best choice is to set incremental goals. It is very difficult to set goals for losing weight by percentage on the body fat scales. Usually, you will need an experienced trainer to do this. The problem is that, if you are exercising, you will gain muscle mass at the same time as you lose fat. This makes it very difficult to calculate goals for the body fat scales. It might be better to try to lose 5 or 10 pounds a month until you reach your desired body fat scale level.
