Top Ten Cinematic Video Games Of All Time

Since the dawn of video gaming developers have tried to shock, amaze, and above all entertain us with great video game visuals. In the last two decades we have saw video games transform from tiny blocks of pixels to life like movies. When I stepped into the gaming scene games had very little cinematic's. So I took it upon myself to introduce ten video games meant to offer entertainment equal to your favorite movie or TV show.

#10 Uncharted Series

While I have not played this game myself, I’m under the influence none the less it deserves a spot on this top ten list. The game follows Nathan “Nate” Drake as he explores the mystery of his long dead ancestor. Fashioned much like a Indiana Jones adventure film. You will surely be amazed with the lovely detail of the Amazon and the beauty of this very cinematic game.

#9 God Of War III

Based loosely on Greek mythology, the game takes place in ancient Greece. Resuming the role of protagonist Kratos, ex God of War, after brutally taking a beating from Papa Zeus, King of the almighty Olympian Gods. The visuals will knock you off your rocker. God of War III has won several awards including Best Playstation 3 Game, Best Graphics, and funny enough Kratos obtained the “Biggest Badass” award from the Spike Video Game awards. Point being if you want action & eye candy play this game. Really play them all. If you love mythology like I do you won’t be disappointed.

#8 Resident Evil 6

This game is set up in chapters. Told from the perspectives of three very familiar faces, and one new to the scene. Be prepared to take on a the force behind a gaint bio-terrorist attack as Ada Wong, Chris Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy, an noob Jake Muller, the illegitimate son of Albert Wesker. his game and the fifth installment are probably the most cinematic horror games I’ve ever played. Resident Evil 6 more so than 5. From time to time you feel like your in control of a fast paced action movie, and then you find yourself creeping along a pitch black town hall. People both fans of action & horror will be right at home with this.

#7 Alan Wake

The second video game I know to be set up in this way. Alan Wake is a cinematic action game, set to the theme of a psychological thriller television show. You take control of Alan Wake in six episodes that will leave you unable to stop playing as they end in crazy plot twist, and cliffhangers. I would love to see more games like this. It’s just so unique, and the storytelling is done so well. You will always being wondering whats really going on. Give it a shot.

#6 Bioshock

As I am not usually a FPS kinda gal, I can’t praise this game enough. As you asume the role of Jack a plane crash suvivor you embark for the City of Rapture. Set in 1960 prepare yourself for a work of art in motion. Facing creepy mutated beings in this hauntingly lovely city under the ocean you find yourself not caring if you ever see the sunlight again. This game is so stunning you will feel like your living the game through Jacks eyes. Prepare your eyes for a lovely eyegasim.

#5 Xenosaga

This one could not escape my list. Known at the time of it’s release on Playstation 2 as game with absurdly long cinematic’s. A great RPG for the scifi anime style lover. In the year T.C 4767 Earth has been lost, removed from star charts a renamed Lost Jerusalem. Mankind has laid down new roots on distant planets, and space colonies. The Galaxy Federation stationed on Fifth Jerusalem the capital of all discovered space keep watch over all mankind. While the Xenosage universe is full humans, you will also find androids, cyborgs, and Realians. While this game will not be for everyone, it holds a dear spot in my heart & on my list.

#4 Final Fantasy XIII

While I love all Final Fantasy games, not all of them are like a walking cinematic. With Final Fantasy XIII you get one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever laid eyes on. Cocoon, a levitating world where Sanctum rules supreme. Sanctum has begun a operation known as the purge. Folks known to have came in contact with Pulse.(aka Pulse is the much feared world below.) As Lightening begins her quest to save her sister, whom was branded as a Pulse LaCi enemy to Cocoon. On the way Lightening will join, and group with buddies all branded by the same god-like being from Pulse. Fighting the Sanctum, while trying to discover a unknown task assigned to them as a LaCi to prolong a transformation into monster like creature or fancy crystals at tasks end, Everything in this game is bound to wow you if RPG’s are your cup of tea.

#3 Mass Effect Trilogy

In truth when talking about Mass Effect you can’t just single one game out over the other. Making this one of the longest video gaming eyegasims you will have. By far my favorite game of this decade period. This is a game of choice. By that I mean everything you chose matters. While the game isn’t just cinematic alone you have complete control of how your story plays out. From choosing to slap a nerve racking reporter, or saving the last queen of an extinct alien race of bug like creatures. You will be entertained regardless. You can play as either male or female protagonist, Commander Sheperd. Your mission is to save the galaxy from a sentient machine force known as the Reapers. Mass Effect follows Shepherd from is battle with Saren, and the Geth. His eventually suicide mission in part two as he teams with new and old friends from the first game. Supported by the Illusive man head man of Cerberus, a human group with a bad reputation. Then the stunning conclusion in part three as the Reapers invade to harvest all highly developed life in the galaxy. PLAY THIS NOW!!!

#2 Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

While I would like to add all the Metal Gear Solid titles to my list, none offer the jaw dropping awesomeness such as Guns of the Patriots. Metal Gear Solid known for its tactical espionage action is so much more than a stealth game. It’s 2014, war fought by PMC soldiers is what the world economy relies on. PMC’s are injected with nanomachines that manipulate abilities to give soldiers the advantage on the field of battle. (SOP) Sons of the Patriots is the control network meant you goveren these nanomachines. Snake had begin to age rapidly, and has less than a year to live due to being a clone. Liquid Ocelot is planning to hijack the SOP. Snake is now living with Otacon, and Sunny, Olga Gurlkovich’s daughter. Commanding officer Roy Campbell gives Snake his last mission. To put a bullet in Liquid once and for all. I really wanted to make this my #1 cinematic game for the sake of its awesomeness, yet there is only one game I can think of to be the master of cinematic games. Onto #1….

#1 Heavy Rain

Why did Heavy Rain get #1? The answer is very simple. The game is nothing but a cinematic basically. As described by developers it is interactive drama. (aka A huge movie you control.) As a dramatic thriller fashioned in the style of a noir film the story throws in to the role of four protagonist. All four have odd connections to the Origami Killer, a pycho serial killer who really loves the rain. The sicko uses long bouts of flooding to drown his children victims. You begin as Ethan Mars, a father hell bent on saving his son from being the next victim. Then the game transitions to FBI profiler Norman Jayden, Madison Paige a journalist, and good ol private eye Scott Shelby each trying to uncover the mystery that is the Origami Killer. While the game is most of the time a string of fast and slow paced QTE’s it is storytelling at it’s best. There are many outcomes, and choices you can make. Believe me they all matter and contribute to the outcome of your story. Right now no other game can touch this game on what it does. So give it a go. I doubt you will regret it.
