I have hundreds of phrases that rank in Google's top ten.

I get about 1500 visitors per day, most coming from the search engines. This lens shares research on how I've done it.

Just last week I had my 1,500,000th visitor to this site. My traffic is still strong, even after the Google Farmer/Panda update.

How do they find me? What are they looking for? Here are some of the searches where I come up at the top of the list.

ten best things to do in California: An internet surfer typed in ten best things to do in California. My sites ranked 4 times in the top ten google results - at #1, #2, #4 and #5.
things you should do in Spain: An internet surfer typed in things you should do in Spain. My site ranked #1.
Driving Mulholland: This search found my old blog at #1. I'm in the process of getting this to autolink over to the my main site using a 404 redirect so I don't lose any of my google rank. Mulholland Drive is a very famous drive in Los Angeles.

Social Media Optimization

Social Media Optimization or SMO is using the social networks to build traffic to your site.

I can't tell you how much participating in the social networks has helped me, it's hard to quantify. Right now they only represent 2-3% of my daily traffic, but most of my profiles have rank with google, so they keep the spiders very active on my site and may pass along a little pagerank.

Things You Should Do on Youtube: Youtube's been great. I've done three little videos to promote my site and they've been viewed almost 2,500 times in the last 5 months.
Things You Should Do on MySpace: MySpace has been an excellent way for me to network - I've had particular success finding friends who are jazz fans or musicians, golfers and artists.
Things You Should Do on Facebook: I haven't really figured out how to use Facebook yet. I'll keep you posted. If you've got any advice, I'd welcome it.
JulieMarg on Ballroom Dance Center: Sometimes I participate on the social network as an individual and am more subtle in promoting the Things You Should Do. This site was organized by Tony Dovolani, professional dancer on Dancing With the Stars. It's new and fun to be involved with other dance fans.
JulieMarg on Eons: Eons is a social networking site for baby boomers that hopes to be the next MySpace. Jane Seymour is one of their celebrity members. I am a member as an individual, but use my blog to promote Things You Should Do.
Julie Gallaher on LinkedIn: I have an individual profile on LinkedIn, which is a professional networking site. I am using it to connect with internet and travel professionals.
My Flickr Group for Things You Should Do: I've just started a group to share pics of the places I've featured on Things You Should Do. I'm going to invite Flickr users who have featured the same places I do in their photo group to join.

Did You Hear About MY Helicopter Ride with the California Highway Patrol?

Last February, I joined the Hike for Discovery to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. On my first hike with the group, I fell 30 feet & cartwheeled down the side of the mountain. After rescue by helicopter and 3 weeks in the hospital, I spent 10 weeks in a wheelchair.

But, I'm all better now (nearly) and wouldn't have made it without the fabulous Patty who was one of the hikers and just happened to be a nurse who previously was an E.M.T. and the rest of the wonderful people from the group.
