My Top 10 Favorite Teas

If you are around me in the morning (either in person or on Twitter), you'll soon learn that I need TEA when I wake up. Yes, I'm a tea drinker, and I drink lots of tea! Many kinds, too: black, green, white, red, herbal. If it is called tea, chances are that I will drink it. When I was given the Rocket Mom challenge of creating a Top Ten list, I immediately thought of tea.

So here they are - My Top Ten Favorite Teas!

Tea Beginnings

I remember how I became a tea drinker. My parents traveled a lot when I was younger, and they came home from a trip to England bearing Twinnings Tea and turkish delight. The turkish delight was OK, but the tea I really liked.

As I grew older I became fascinated with all things UK (mostly due to a Duran Duran obsession). They drank tea, therefore I drank tea. During my college years when most of my fellow classmates were inhaling coffee, I stuck to tea. Also in college I spent a year studying in London where I learned to love milk in my tea.

Somehow not caring for coffee didn't stop me from becoming not only a Cafe Manager but a Cafe Trainer as well. I traveled throughout our company's district teaching and supporting other cafe managers. My training position meant I got to go to a BIG coffee company for official barista training. At the same time, I was trained on tea making and became an Honorary Ambassador to the Republic of Tea. I'm sure I have the certificate around here somewhere!

Since my teen years I have been firmly convinced that I was born on the "wrong side of the pond" and my love for Duran Duran and all things UK continues. I will admit to enjoying the odd coffee drink now and again, usually in the form of an iced mocha. But my hot caffeinated drink of choice will always be tea.

Numi Honeybush Organic Bushmen's Brew Herbal Teasan 18 Bags

I did a tea tasting with my students, and this tea was the winner! It is actually a tisane, meaning there it is not made with tea leaves, but with herbs (caffeine free). It is light, smooth and definitely tastes a bit like honey! Plus the kids got a kick out of drinking something with honey in the name.

Basic Tea Information

Tea is the agricultural product of the leaves, leaf buds, and internodes of the Camellia sinensis plant, prepared and cured by various methods. "Tea" also refers to the aromatic beverage prepared from the cured leaves by combination with hot or boiling water,Webster's Third New International Dictionary and is the common name for the Camellia sinensis plant itself.

After water, tea is the most widely-consumed beverage in the world. It has a cooling, slightly bitter, astringent flavour which many enjoy.

The four types of tea most commonly found on the market are black tea, oolong tea, green tea and white tea, all of which can be made from the same bushes, processed differently, and, in the case of fine white tea, grown differently. Pu-erh tea, a post-fermented tea, is also often classified as amongst the most popular types of tea.

The term "herbal tea" usually refers to an infusion or tisane of leaves, flowers, fruit, herbs or other plant material that contains no Camellia sinensis.Dictionary.com search Herbal tea. Retrieved February 15, 2007. The term "red tea" either refers to an infusion made from the South African rooibos plant, also containing no Camellia sinensis, or, in Chinese, Korean, Japanese and other East Asian languages, refers to black tea.

TAZO Organic Apple Red Herbal Infusion, Caffeine Free, 20-Count Tea Bags (Pack of 6)

I like to drink this tea on cold afternoons. It is caffeine-free so I don't need to worry about it interfering with my sleep. It tastes like a tart carmel apple to me. Even my toddler enjoys sipping this one (at room temperature of course!)

Good Earth Original Tea Blend, Tea Bags, 18-Count, Boxes (Pack of 6) [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]

I generally don't care for really sweet tea, but this tea is nicely sweet as well as being deliciously spicy. Plus I love the pretty box!

Peppermint Tea - 20 - Bag

Many years ago I visited the Celestial Seasonings factory in Boulder, Colorado. What I remember most of the tour was the peppermint room. It was a large room where all the peppermint was stored and it was literally impossible to stand in there for longer than a few seconds. The scent was so strong it brought tears to our eyes - and cleared our sinuses as well! Ever since then I have been partial to the Celestial Seasonings Peppermint tea. It is very soothing when one has an upset tummy!

Harney & Sons Fine Teas Earl Grey Supreme Tin - 20 Sachets

Earl Grey is a tea that you either love or hate. I happen to love Earl Grey (as does my husband). The strong flavor comes from bergamot which comes from a citrus fruit. Some Earl Grey teas are very sharp in flavor. H&S has produced a very smooth flavor for their Earl Grey. In fact, it was recommended to me by a tea aficionado who hates Earl Grey in general, but will enjoy a cup of this brand.

Hot Cinnamon Sunset, 20 Sachets in tin by Harney & Sons

This is the most AMAZING cinnamon tea ever! I'm not sure how it is done, but the tea is actually sweet without any sweetners. I could sniff this tea all day long. The triangular silk tea bags are gorgeous and bring a touch of class to the bagged-tea world. These silk bags are also larger than most, allowing the leaves more movement during the steeping process. The tea is strong enough to easily get more than one cup out of the bag.

Ginger Peach Tea by The Republic of Tea - 50 tea bags, with Caffeine

This is my favorite tea for making iced tea, and during the summer months I make A LOT of iced tea! I've not detected a ginger flavor yet, but the peach taste is wonderful. When I use them for iced tea, I use half Ginger Peach bags and half regular tea bags. This way my stash of Ginger Peach bags lasts longer. Another tip: throw in a few whole cloves when you make your iced tea: this gives your tea a hint of sweetness along with some spiciness!

Iced tea may not have as much wisdom as hot tea, but in the summer better a cool and refreshed dullard than a steamy sweat-drenched sage - leave sagacity to the autumn!

Dragon Pearl Fresh Whole Tea Leaves

The scent of this tea is just heavenly! The leaves come are tightly-packed little balls. It only takes 2 or 3 balls for a cup of tea, and they can be steeped two or three times! Kids love watching how it unfurls into really long leaves as it steeps. It is a green tea, so be sure to use not-quite boiling water and steep no longer than two minutes to avoid creating a "stewed" flavor.

Lipton Regular Tea Bags, 100 ct Each (PACK OF 2)

This is what I drink everyday, first thing in the morning. I know its not elegant to drink tea made from bags, but when I'm drinking tea in the morning - I don't want complicated or fussy. I like a strong black tea that can hold up some milk! And a lot of it too, so I always buy this tea in bulk!

The real question is......

Do you take milk with your tea?

My Bio

As an educator (licensed K-6, Montessori Primary certification: AMS, MACTE) and a parent, I am devoted to helping chidren learning how to become independent, life-long learners and good citizens. Montessori is an effective way to translate these beliefs into reality. Sadly, not everyone has access to a Montessori education. So I am bringing my experiences, thoughts and beliefs to the table with the intention of helping others and keeping Montessori education alive.

I am also a compulsive reader, bibliophile, anglophile, armchair traveler, creative cook, aspiring gardener who happens to enjoy listening to 80's music. I happen to think (and my husband agrees) that I have a fabulous sense of humor.
