Oh please, you want to be a video game tester? Do you really know what you are getting into? Be sure to do your research. This job is not all about the love of money, it's about the love of video games. Sure the money can be good, but certainly not at first. You will need to work hard and prove yourself to start earning the so-called "big bucks" that some talk about. Please don't be naive, you are not going to walk in off the street and start earning $80 an hour. That just don't happen folks, at least not to 99% of us. But hey, if you feel lucky stop reading this now, who am I to say that you can find that needle in the haystack.
Yes I said it, there. Being a video game tester is boring. That is why you must real be in it for the love of video games. Sure you can play video games all day, some days. But it's not quite what you think. You will be told which game to play, what part to play and how to play it. You will need to test very inch of the video game multiple times. And god forbid you find a nasty bug. You could be playing the same thing for a week trying to track the bug down and make it repeatable. Not only that but now you must open up a word processor and fill out a very detailed bug report.
The only real reason to become a game tester is to use it as a stepping stone to bigger and better jobs in the video game industry. The experience you can get from being a game tester for just a short time is invaluable. Try to do it before you go to school for game design or programming. You will get much more out of your schooling once you learn what you need to know for the job. Then when you complete school your work as a game tester will be a great thing to put on your resume. Someone with experience in the game industry, even just as a tester, will have an advantage over someone coming out of school with no experience.
