The Green Collar Economy

How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems

Human rights activist and environmental leader Jones (founder of the national organization Green For All) lays out a visionary and practical explanation of the two major challenges the U.S. currently faces-massive socioeconomic inequality and imminent ecological catastrophe-and how the current third wave of environmentalism, the "investment" wave, can solve both.

The Global Water Crisis

Maude Barlow and the Blue Covenant

Canadian antiglobalization activist Barlow (Blue Gold) calls for a blue covenant among nations to define the world's fresh water as a human right and a public trust rather than a commercial product. Barlow notes that as many as 36 U.S. states could reach a water crisis in five years; that once vast freshwater resources like Lake Chad and the Aral Sea are becoming briny puddles; and a handful of multinational water companies are bidding for the complete commodification of formerly public water resources.

Bill McKibben

Writes about climate change and local economies

Bill McKibben is one of the most important writers and activists today. He first became known for his book "The End of Nature," published in 2000. Recently, he founded the organization 350 (safe upper limit of carbon dioxide) which, according to Wikipedia, coordinated what Foreign Policy magazine called "the largest ever global coordinated rally of any kind," with 5,200 simultaneous demonstrations in 181 countries. The magazine named him to its inaugural list[3] of the 100 most important global thinkers, and MSN named him one of the dozen most influential men of 2009.

Michael Pollan

writes about food and food systems

I was first exposed to Michael Pollan through his book, The Omnivore's Dilemma, where he examines the roots of four different meals - a McDonald's lunch, a dinner from ingredients purchased at Whole Foods, another from ingredients from a small farm, and another that he foraged himself. It is truly fascinating. Since then, I have seen him speak at Butler University in Indianapolis, and read one of his more recent books, In Defense of Food. He is also co-filmmaker for the film, Food Inc. In 2010, he was one of Time's 100 most important people.

Thank you for providing this compendium of influential environmental books. I have read some of them, but look forward to checking out more of your recommendations. Annie Dillard and Michael Pollan are two of my favorite authors. And, of course, I have read Rachel Carson and Aldo Leopold. Each voice has a vital message for us to absorb and act upon. That's the key -- taking action.
